Overview

Distributed Energy Systems (DES) address a range of issues such as lowering energy costs and exposure to price volatility, reducing distribution losses, and increasing energy reliability and quality. In addition to this, DES can also add to local economic development, and provide energy for communities which are off the gas or electricity grids. With increasing pressure for clean energy generation, the development of DES gives us a unique opportunity to switch to alternative sources of power.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers has therefore organised this seminar to examine the engineering challenges that implementing and developing DES creates, and debate the solutions to these challenges. This seminar follows an Expert Meeting organised by EESG in January 2009, at which over 30 leaders in the field of DES met to identify the potential routes forward. Teams of experts have been working since then to develop the proposals that will be presented at this seminar.

With key presentations from the Government, major power companies, and companies involved in DES projects, this event will provide a comprehensive update on the latest engineering challenges and solutions facing the drive towards DES.

Presentation of prizes to "Our World in 2050" winners
After the close of the DES seminar, the Question Time: Global Challenges, Local Solutions will take place commencing at 18.45 (Refreshments from 18.00) . This will be a high-level debate to discuss what more can be done to make our communities more sustainable, and as an exemplar town in this regard, Woking is an ideal place to hold this event. The panel will include: John Thorp - Thameswey Ltd, Jim Skea - Member of the Committee on Climate Change, Miriam Kennet - CEO of the Green Economics Institute, Richard Hurford, Head of the Energy Saving Trust for the South East of England and Derek Parkin, Managing Director of Business Services at E.ON UK.

There will be introductory speeches by each of the panel members and then open to the floor for questions. In addition, there will also be a presentation of prizes to "Our World in 2050" winners.
