What will we do when the old outnumber the young? The world's age profile is changing - by 2050, more than a third of the world population will be over 65.  The fastest growing group is those 85 and over, meaning that by 2050 there will be more than 4 people over the age of 80 for every child.

(United Nations, 2003)

It is essential for this ageing population to retain independence not just for their personal amenity, but to maintain the financial stability of our society. This situation needs to be addressed immediately. But how are transport, private homes and public infrastructure being developed to meet this challenge?
This two-day event will highlight the crucial role of engineering, in meeting the needs of the ageing population and creating an environment of inclusive design in which people of all ages can participate equally.
The first day will illustrate the current situation, identifying the major engineering challenges that we are facing. Distinguished keynote speakers from the media, government and industry will present the problems in their own areas, focusing on the many design challenges to be tackled. The second day will be devoted to defining the engineering response to these problems. This will encompass professional engineering in the fields of construction and building services, with an afternoon symposium focusing on the important area of transport.

In terms of addressing the technical challenges for an ageing population and identifying the potential commercial opportunities, the Conference will enable delegates to:
•    Recognise the social implications and issues
•    Identify the required changes in engineering products and infrastructure
•    Appreciate the challenges and commercial opportunities related to the safe use of domestic products, services and public transport
•    Understand the need for engagement and dialogue between engineers and older users to solve these problems
•    Recognise the design and development opportunities and markets for new products

POSTER and INSERT OPPORTUNITIES
Do you have an exciting idea or innovation you want to present to industry?
There are ample opportunities at this event for both poster presentations during the refreshment breaks and inserts into the proceedings. These are ideal ways of communicating novel ideas and technology being developed in this area. To find out more about either option, please contact Jacqui Parker on medical@imeche.org or +44 (0)20 7304 6966

Poster and Insert Guidelines can be downloaded from the download documents section on the left hand menu.
