Lecture starts: 18:00

Skilled use of the arm is vital to the performance of daily tasks of personal care and mobility. For many older people, this function is compromised by arthritic changes or neurological damage following a stroke or other impairment. The engineering challenge is to understand the biomechanics of the limb, and to develop models and measurement techniques that lead to new implant designs and treatment plans.

This lecture will describe a state-of-the-art biomechanical model of the shoulder and its use to design novel shoulder joint
replacements. Professor Johnson will then illustrate how biomechanical measurements may be used to understand arm function and evaluate the effectiveness of treatments. Additionally, he will discuss the future role of robots in rehabilitation of the arm.

Meet the Speaker: Professor Garth R Johnson FREng

Centre for Rehabilitation and Engineering Studies (CREST), School of Mechanical and Systems Engineering, Newcastle University

Garth Johnson is Emeritus Professor at Newcastle University as well as being Head of Research at ADL Smartcare. His main research interest is the biomechanics of the upper limb, with application both to implant design and to the problems of measuring neurological impairment.

His recent work has focused on biomechanical approaches to the measurement of spasticity and the development of new joint replacements for the shoulder.

Garth has written over 200 papers and book chapters on biomechanics and rehabilitation engineering. He is a former chairman, and current member, of the MED Board.

He also sits on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Engineering in Medicine. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a member of the UK Focus for Biomedical Engineering and a founder member of the Society for Research in Rehabilitation.
