Overview

Mechanical engineering skills are the key to improving safety and reliability while reducing cost. Offshore Engineering 2015 will examine the best designs and operating practices in a challenging environment.

Experts from the operator and contractor community will present technical papers showing how problems have been solved offshore. Topics covered include major hazards and process safety, asset life extension, the use of computational fluid dynamics, subsea technologies, decommissioning, well integrity and human factors – all issues at the leading edge of modern offshore engineering.

Steve Garrett: Manager, Global Technology Centre, Chevron Energy Technology Company

Steve Garrett’s career began with the British Antarctic Survey where he led three seasons of fieldwork in West Antarctica. He joined Chevron in London, with further assignments in Canada, California and Aberdeen. He has led the application of technology to field development and reservoir management for fields in Europe and North America, together with people development for earth scientists in Chevron. He is an experienced communicator and has been quoted in several press articles on the impact of technology on the industry. He was 2011 President of the Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain (PESGB) and is currently a Non-Executive Director of the Industry Technology Facilitator (ITF). Steve has BSc in Geology from University of Bristol (1980)an MSc in Applied Geophysics from the University of Birmingham (1981) and a PhD in Antarctic Geophysics from the University of Birmingham (1987)

Neil Gordon: CEO, Subsea UK

Neil Gordon initially studied business in Aberdeen then trained as a commercial diver spending eight years carrying out numerous diving assignments in the UK and Norwegian waters involving new construction projects, pipeline surveys, welding and inspection. He has over 25 years' management experience in director and business development roles, combined with over 15 years in the subsea industry. Prior to joining Subsea UK, he spent four years managing the National Hyperbaric Centre which included project-managing saturation diving operations and hyperbaric weld trials. He more recently developed the subsea safety training and consultancy aspect of the business, where he regularly lectured to subsea engineers and delivered a range of training courses both in the UK and overseas. He has experience working in India, Middle-east, Africa and Brazil and has worked with the Oil and Gas Producers diving operations sub-committee on client representative training and competency for subsea projects. He was also an active member of the IMCA diving safety, medical, technical and training committee.

Breen Russell: Operations Manager, Energy Division- Offshore, HSE

Russell Breen is an Offshore Operations Manager with the Health and Safety Executives Energy Division. He manages specialist inspection teams covering major hazards safety across a range of disciplines including Mechanical Engineering; Structural Integrity; Marine and Naval Architecture; Materials; Well Operations and Offshore Diving. He is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer by background and has worked for HSE for over 20 years. Russell has held a number of operational and management roles with HSE, spanning conventional health and safety onshore with the Field Operations Directorate and Major Hazards both on and offshore, with the Hazardous Installations Directorate. Over the course of his HSE career, he has investigated many serious and fatal accidents and has led a number of Major Incident Investigations.

Ian Randle: Managing Director, Hu-Tech Ltd and President-Elect, Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors

Ian Randle is Managing Director and a Principal Consultant at Hu-Tech. He is a qualified and registered Human Factors Engineer with over 28 years’ experience in consultancy, research and teaching. He is also a qualified QA systems assessor and has worked in all major industrial sectors including transportation, oil & gas, process and defence. Ian has been working on oil/gas projects around the world for the past 22 years. His input has ranged from managing the HFE process throughout the project to undertaking Human Error Analysis of Safety Critical Tasks. He is the main author of the UK HSE’s ‘Offshore Ergonomics Resource Pack’. This highlights ergonomic challenges in the offshore workplace and environment and provides practical solutions to common issues.

Nigel Jenkins: CEO, Decom North Sea

Nigel began his role as Chief Executive of Decom North Sea in July 2014. He is responsible for leading the representative body for the decommissioning industry as it plays a vital role in the efficient decommissioning of oil and gas assets and thus delivering to the Wood Review and Oil & Gas Authority Call to Action. Nigel’s previous roles include board leadership positions with AMEC and AECOM and most recently as board director with KDC Contractors, a leading UK decommissioning service provider. He is passionate about the industry’s collective responsibility to efficiently manage and deliver end-of-asset life solutions and brings experience from a variety of sectors, including onshore oil, gas and process, nuclear, pharmaceuticals and manufacturing. Nigel Previously served as a director with Decom North Sea from 2011 – 2013. He has a first in Mechanical Engineering from Liverpool John Moores University.

Matt Straw: Director, Norton Straw

Matt Straw is Managing Director of Norton Straw Consultants, an engineering and management consultancy serving the oil and gas industry. His engineering project experience involving computational fluid dynamics (CFD) includes flow assurance, integrity management, marine operations, separation performance, technical safety and decommissioning. Matt holds a PhD in the development and validation of CFD from the University of Nottingham and has over 20 years’ experience in the field. For the last 15 years Matt has worked in the oil and gas industry for engineering consultancies and CFD software companies in the UK, USA and South East Asia in engineering, management and board positions.
