Ron Pratt: Specialist Engineering Consultant, Poyry Energy

Ron Pratt joined the UKAEA in 1961. He became a member of the IMechE in 1970 and a Chartered Engineer in 1972. After several years in Project Design Engineering, he was appointed head of the Filter Development and Test facilities at Harwell. During this period he was a member of the BSI Technical Committee for HEPA filters and the cross industry Nuclear Containment and Ventilation Working Party. He regularly presented papers to the DOE/NRC Nuclear Air Cleaning Conferences. He resigned from UKAEA in 1990 to join Gravatom Projects Ltd. as Technical Director and was later employed by Poyry Energy Ltd. as Technical Consultant for nuclear decommissioning and containment and ventilation projects. He is currently employed as Specialist Engineering Consultant with Poyry Energy Ltd.

Matthew Emptage: Nuclear Site Regulator, Environment Agency

Matthew Emptage has an Environmental Science Degree was followed by a PhD in Environmental Radioactivity and 9 years of research work at Lancaster University. The research work centred on the use of natural and man-made radioactivity to study environmental processes. Four years followed working for the nuclear industry in Environmental Management. The last sixteen years have been spent working as a. This has involved regulating a range of nuclear sites against permit requirements; participating in the development of policy, process and guidance and project managing research and development work.

Joanna Harris: Principal Consultant in the Sustainable Construction Group, BSRIA

Jo Harris has an MSc in Facilities Management and a BSc in Electrical /Electronic Engineering. She leads all BSRIA’s work on facilities management and has managed consultancy contracts for key BSRIA clients. Jo has responsibility for the BSRIA Operations and Maintenance Benchmarking network which captures benchmarking data covering building operations and maintenance. Jo has contributed to BSRIA’s publications relating to Asset Management and Maintenance Audits, Condition Surveys and Asset Data Capture, Building Manuals and User Guides, Maintenance Contracts and Business Focused Maintenance. Jo has been Chair of the CIBSE maintenance task group for over three years and has been responsible this year for coordinating the update of CIBSE Guide M Maintenance Engineering and Management. Jo is also involved in the BIM4FM group and the production of PAS 1192-3 from BSI ‘Specification for information management for the operational phase of construction projects using building information modelling’ published in March 2014.

Chris Chadwick: Market Manager, Nuclear Service, Porvair Filtration Group Ltd

Chris Chadwick first graduated in mechanical engineering and entered the filtration industry in 1972, and completed a Science Education degree in 1993, he has worked on nuclear (and other process industrial) separation projects since. Actively engaged on advisory forums, standards committees and systems development in China, Australia, the US, the UK and Europe, Chris Chadwick leads the Nuclear Services Team at Porvair Filtration

David John Burt: Principal Engineer, MMI Engineering Ltd

David Burt is Principal Engineer for the MMI Bristol office. He has over 25 years’ experience in the application of hydraulic and fluid dynamic modelling codes including ANSYS-CFX and Flowmaster. He has previously worked for British Nuclear Fuels and AEA Technology and was involved in the development and application of several models in the CFX code for application in nuclear systems. Over the last 11 years at MMI he has developed a team of specialist engineers focussing on the application of process modelling using CFD for diverse projects including nuclear ventilation, package transport and solids separation systems.

James Hoyes: Senior Scientist In Fluid Dynamics Team, HSL

James Hoyes is a senior scientist in the Fluid Dynamics team at HSL (the research arm of the UK’s HSE). He is responsible for carrying out analytical and CFD modelling of gas releases, fires and explosions. His work involves carrying out consequence analyses, contributing to incident investigations and investigating the safety of new technologies. He works closely with the UK regulators (including ONR) and also carries out work for nuclear and petroleum sector licensees. His areas of expertise include hydrogen dispersion and stratification, passive ventilation, vented deflagrations, LNG pool fires and dense gas dispersion. His work also involves reviewing third party modelling and providing input to regulations, codes and standards. A Chartered Mathematician and a Member of the Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications, James joined HSL in 2008 after graduating with a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Leeds. His PhD involved working alongside geologists to investigate buoyancy-driven dispersion of sediment-laden turbidity currents.

Ian McDonald: Senior Ventilation Engineer, Cavendish Nuclear

Ian McDonald has spent nearly 30 years working in the ventilation and building services industry, with over 20 years spent in the nuclear sector. In this time he has worked on reactor buildings with NNC Ltd, before moving to AWE to be involved with the sites Rationalisation Projects and the work to become a nuclear licensed site. Ian then went on to work on the D154 Project at Devonport with BNFL Engineering, before moving in to his current area of decommissioning work at Sellafield, in Legacy Ponds and Silos.

Alex Dunbar: BNI Systems Engineer, EDF Energy

Alex Dunbar has worked in the Nuclear Industry for more than 10 years. He started his career in Magnox Generation (then part of BNFL) before spending 5 years authoring and managing both safety cases and design for Fuel Route Systems in British Energy (now EDF Energy). He spent 2 years on secondment to EDF’s New Nuclear Build Department (CNEN) in Paris and is now responsible for the Safety Case and Design Integrity of HVAC systems at Hinkley Point C

Graham Lyons: Balance of Nuclear Island (BNI) Team Lead – Design Authority - NNB, EDF Energy

Graham Lyons has over 40 years’ experience in the HVAC industry, 30 of which has been spent in the Nuclear Industry. As a HVAC design engineer, Graham has worked on a variety of projects for UKAEA, Sellafield Ltd and EDF Energy Nuclear Generation. Graham was part of the Project Management Team which designed HVAC systems for the Sizewell B Nuclear Reactor in the late 1980’s. He currently acts in an Intelligent Customer role at NNB Genco, providing oversight of Radwaste, Fuel storage, Fuel handling and HVAC design and safety cases, for the Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Plant Project.

Ray Landsdowne : Business Development Manager, Clean Air Technologies

Ray Landsdowne has worked for Clean Air Technologies since 2000, Ray has been instrumental in the development & implementation of compliance testing for highly regulated contamination-controlled facilities. Leading the Service Department with 15 field engineers and support staff to consistently deliver a first-class service to an extensive UK client-base. Ray is the driving force behind expansion into the Nuclear Market, mainly facilitated as exclusive distributor - Krantz Filter & Damper Systems portfolio of specialist ventilation products. Ray has consistently demonstrated excellent technical understanding of Cleanroom, Bio-Containment and Nuclear industries, recently invited to speak at a Nuclear Institute event, Cumbria.

Audrey Lerigo: EDF Energy, Design and Radioactive Discharge Specialist

Audrey Lerigo has been working in the nuclear industry for 7 years. She completed a Nuclear Engineering Masters at Ecole des Mines in France. She previously worked as an Environment and Radwaste Consultant before she joined NNB GenCo in 2011. She now works as a Design and Radioactive Discharge Specialist, supporting the new nuclear build projects at Hinkley Point and Sizewell. Audrey also holds a Radioactive Waste Adviser certificate. Her role primarily involves oversight of environmental permit compliance and EPR plant design, advising on matters related to management of radioactive waste, including HVAC design and gaseous discharge monitoring.

Robert Cullen: Nuclear Safety Consultant, Pöyry Energy Ltd

Robert Cullen has 35 years operational and safety experience in the nuclear industry; he has been a safety practitioner for over 25 years. He joined BNFL (now Sellafield Ltd.) in 1979 and spent the next 8 years on development work for nuclear reprocessing plants including THORP. Moving from nuclear plant operation into nuclear safety in 1987 he developed his safety skills in writing and managing the production of the first Sellafield Fully Developed Safety Cases before joining the safety team managing the safety cases for the construction, commissioning and early operation of the THORP Reprocessing Plant. Bob currently works for Pöyry Energy Ltd. in Warrington, UK as a nuclear safety consultant supplying safety expertise to various clients within the UK and Europe. Pöyry Energy is part of the Pöyry group of companies employing about 7000 experts in 49 countries worldwide. Pöyry is a global expert in consulting and engineering offering clients in-depth industry expertise, innovative solutions and lifecycle engagement.

Tim Houghton: Consultant, Frazer-Nash Consultancy

Tim Houghton joined Frazer-Nash Consultancy after graduating from Cambridge University with a PhD in turbomachinery aerodynamics. As an engineer and project manager, he has delivered a wide range of technical projects involving aerodynamics, hydrodynamics and heat transfer across the power, industry and aerospace sectors. However, most of his work has been in the nuclear industry, where he has performed a range of complex assessments supporting the continued operation of existing facilities as well as new-build projects.

John Goodhead: AWE, Engineer

John Goodhead completed Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship in Devonport Royal Dockyard before entering the drawing office, becoming involved in installation of plant and equipment for Naval shore bases. Transferred to AWE where I was involved in commissioning the engineering systems of a new building. Moved to become Shift Manager in a production facility. Gained extensive operational experience of ventilation systems and other engineered plant. Currently running facility control in a production facility.
