Andreas Pfrang: Scientist, Directorate for Energy, Transport and Climate , Energy Storage Unit, European Commission, DG Joint Research Centre

After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, Andreas Pfrang received his PhD in physics at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, in 2004. After providing microscopy services as team leader at Freudenberg Forschungsdienste in Weinheim, Germany, in 2007 he joined the European Commission's Joint Research Centre in Petten, Netherlands. There he performed fuel cell related research and was responsible for the microscopy services of the Institute for Energy and Transport until end of 2012. Since January 2013 he has contributed to a new project on battery energy storage testing for safe electrification of transport (BESTEST) at the Joint Research Centre.

Martin Filipec: Project Leader - HIFI-ELEMENTS Project, Ricardo Innovation

Martin Filipec is the Project leader for HIFI-ELEMENTS project within Ricardo Innovation. His previous experience covers number of projects in areas of automotive control and embedded systems, from conventional to hybrid powertrains and recently also EVs.

Stephen Irish: Commercial Managing Director, Hyperdrive Innovation

Stephen is the Commercial Managing Director at Hyperdrive Innovation and has been a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers for over 20 years. He has substantial experience in technology development and product delivery having worked in tier one automotive supply chain companies, automotive OEMs such as Jaguar Land Rover, and engineering consultancies. He wrote his degree thesis on electric and hybrid vehicle technology almost 20 years ago and founded Hyperdrive Innovation in 2012.

Nell Agate Tsui: Associate Director Lithium & Battery Materials, IHS Markit

Ms. Nell Agate Tsui is an Associate Director for the Lithium and Battery Metals Research Team at IHS Markit. Prior to joining IHS Markit, Nell was a Commodities Research Analyst at Citi covering base and precious metals, where she frequently ranked within the top 5 sell-side analysts for three and a half years. Nell initially began her career with GE, rotating between several industrial divisions. She also brings three years of Investment Management experience specializing in Portfolio Analysis from Capital Group and Henderson Global Investors, covering Emerging and Asia Pacific markets. Nell holds a BEng from Imperial College London (RSM) where she completed a six-month secondment during her course at the Max Planck Institute for Research in Düsseldorf, Germany, focusing on process innovations within the metals and mining sector.

Andreas W. Schäfer: Professor of Energy and Transport at the UCL Energy Institute, University College London

Andreas W. Schäfer is a Professor of Energy and Transport at the UCL Energy Institute, University College London, where he also directs the Air Transportation Systems Laboratory (www.ATSLab.org). His advisory roles include the Aerospace Technology Institute, the UK Airports Commission, and the World Economic Forum. Prior to joining the UCL Energy Institute, he held appointments at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of Cambridge, and Stanford University. Andreas holds a MSc in Aerospace Engineering and a PhD in Energy Economics, both from the University of Stuttgart, Germany. He is lead-author of “Transportation in a Climate-Constrained World”, MIT Press (June 2009).

Billy Wu: Senior Lecturer in Energy and Manufacturing, Dyson School of Design Engineering, Imperial College London

Dr. Billy Wu is a senior lecturer in the Dyson School of Design Engineering at Imperial College London. In the department he leads the Robotics and Manufacturing research theme, as well as co-leading the Electrochemical Science and Engineering group. His research focuses on the interface between fundamental science and engineering applications of electrochemical devices such as hydrogen fuel cells, batteries and supercapacitors. Prior to starting his lectureship in 2015, Billy worked on grid scale energy storage, having completed his PhD in 2014 on fuel cell hybrid vehicles, and MEng in Mechanical Engineering (2010) all at Imperial.

Tony Harper: Director of the Faraday Battery Challenge, UK Research and Innovation

Tony Harper is the Industrial Strategy Challenge Director for the Faraday Battery Challenge at UKRI. Tony was previously Director of Research Engineering for Jaguar Land Rover. Tony joined Jaguar as a Graduate Engineer in 1986 with an honours degree in Aeronautical Engineering at Imperial College London. He spent his early career developing the first Airbag-based passive safety systems and developing a number of sports car concepts including the first XK8. In the early 1990's, Tony was involved in the development and use of pioneering Knowledge Based Engineering systems automating sophisticated rule-based Design tasks. In 1999, Tony was appointed as head of Jaguar’s Vehicle Engineering team responsible for Concept Design, Packaging, Aerodynamics and Vehicle Computer Aided Engineering. In 2006, Tony joined Jaguar Land Rover’s combined Product Development Operations to head up the Research and Advanced group. In recent years , Tony has worked closely with the EPSRC and Innovate UK on a number of large, strategic projects on Electrification and Autonomy. He’s a Chartered Engineer, fellow of the IMechE, an honorary fellow of the University Of Warwick, an elected member of the UK Automotive Council Technology group, sits on numerous advisory councils and has recently become a Fellow of The Royal Academy of Engineering.

Nick Carpenter: Engineering Director, Delta Motorsport Limited

Nick Carpenter is founder and Engineering Director of Silverstone-based Delta Motorsport. After gaining a BSc in Automotive Engineering, he spent 4 years working in the automotive sector before joining racecar constructor Reynard in 1996, becoming Assistant Chief Designer in 2001. Nick then moved to a London-based consultancy as Chief Engineer, leading projects from racing motorcycles to a hydrogen fuel cell city car. Formed as a motorsport consultancy in 2005 Delta has, since 2007, broadened its capabilities significantly across the electric and hybrid sector, focusing now on battery systems, range extenders and vehicle dynamics control. Delta is applying these skills across a range of sectors, including automotive, off-highway, marine and others.

Nigel Taylor: Senior Manager Electric Propulsion System Research, Jaguar Land Rover

Nigel Taylor has worked at Jaguar Land rover for 25 years primarily in the Vehicle Noise, vibration and Harshness department specialising in signal processing and acoustics. During the last 10 years he has worked in research where he has won technology awards for time domain route tracking, a Range Extended Electric Vehicle and a High Power Battery Pack design. Nigel has been the technical lead for Jaguar Land Rover, WMG and TMETC on the HVM Catapult Energy Storage project, and is now leading electric propulsion system research with energy storage a key part of that team.

David Sandells: Chief Technical Officer, Hyperdrive Innovation

David Sandells is currently the Chief Technical Officer at Hyperdrive Innovation. Having worked at Dyson, Williams F1, GKN and Borg Warner, David has substantial engineering experience with expert knowledge in the field of power electronics, electric vehicles and electrification technologies.

Anna Wise: Innovation Lead for Batteries, Innovate UK

Anna joined the Automotive team of Innovate UK in June 2017. Her focus is delivering the innovation programmes in battery technology for electric vehicles, in particular the innovation aspect of the £246 million Faraday Battery Challenge. Before joining Innovate UK, she was based in the USA at Stanford University and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. There she carried out collaborative research with business and academia to understand battery behaviour using high intensity X-rays. Anna was awarded a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Southampton in 2012.

Stuart Johnson: Process Development Manager, Battery Materials, Johnson Matthey

Dr. Stuart Johnson leads process development within Johnson Matthey’s Battery Materials group. Dr. Johnson’s career spans leadership of process and business development in a diverse range of industries including battery materials, industrial catalysts, pigments and polyester precursors. He also has extensive supply chain and procurement experience, and is MCIPS certified. He is a chartered chemical engineer (FIChemE).

Owain Griffiths: Development Officer, European Remanufacturing Council

Owain Griffiths is a Development Officer at the Conseil Européen de Remanufacture (CER) and has been working with members of the European Remanufacturing Council to increase internal and external engagement. This has included supporting strategic partnership building, public relations and consortia building for research topics. Owain’s background is in business consultancy and management with a focus on sustainability and circular economy strategy.

Dan Gladwin: Senior Lecturer, University of Sheffield

Dan Gladwin received his MEng and PhD degrees in Electronic Engineering from the University of Sheffield, in 2004 and 2009, respectively. He undertook postdoctoral positions from 2009 to 2010 in power electronics and safety critical embedded systems for electric vehicles. In 2012 Dan became a lecturer in the Department of Electronic and Electrical engineering as a member of the Electrical Machines and Drives research group. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in Electrical Energy Storage and Intelligent Systems. His primary research is focused on electrical energy storage across a wide range of applications that includes automotive, power grid, aerospace, rail, and consumer mobile.
