Mike Colechin: Partnership Manager, Energy Technology Institute

Mike Colechin is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with over 20 years’ experience in the energy sector. Mike currently works for the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI), which brings together engineering projects that accelerate the development of affordable, secure and sustainable technologies to help the UK meet its long term energy objectives. His role is to ensure that the ETI delivers value to its stakeholders, including both public and private sector funders and the wider community of industry, public sector and academic players involved in energy in the UK.  This is about informing government policy, supporting companies developing the new solutions, and building investor and industry confidence in new approaches to energy. Prior to joining the ETI, Mike spent 15 years with E.ON, first as a Combustion Engineer and subsequently as a part of E.ON’s R&D Management Team.

William Hird: Combustion Systems Engineer, WH Power Ltd

William Hird is a Combustion Systems Engineer (Process Engineer) with over 35 years of industrial experience. He started work in smokeless fuels plants and clean coal research and for the last 24 years has been s a thermal power plant consultant working for leading engineering consultancies Jacobs, SKM, PB Power, Merz & McLellan.   During his time as a consultant he has been involved with a lot of the UK EfW plants; the Owner’s engineer on the Bolton thermal recovery facility conversion; Lenders Engineer on SELCHP, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Balovie and Fife; Independent Certifier for Newhaven, Independent review of Leeds, Newport, Coventry, Neath, Stoke, Bolton, Allington; Assisted contractor on Lakeside. He has also undertaken Ofgem ROC/LEC audits and was the author of an EA training guide on waste incineration, gasification and pyrolysis.  If it will burn or gasify, someone will have asked him to look at it for power generation. “The weird and wonderful fuels man”.

Juergen Schaper: General Manager, FCC Environment

Juergen Schaper studied at the University of Essen (Germany) Nuclear Process and Power Plant Engineering, before joining in 1991 Wuergassen NPP as Shift Team Leader. He then developed after closure of Wuergassen in 1996 within E.ON as Engineering and Site Manager in conventional Power Stations before he changed to E.ON UK as Engineering Manager of Kingsnorth Power Station in 2006.

He left E.ON in 2012 to work as Head of Asset Performance in EDF’s coal fleet at Cottam and West Burton. In 2015 Juergen changed as General Manager to FCC Environment, managing the EfW plant at Lincoln/North Hykeham.

Colin Davies has more than 25 years of experience in the Materials & Corrosion Team at Uniper Technologies Limited, specialising in failure investigations for all types of power plant components, and undertakes R&D work examining fireside side corrosion and protection of boiler tubing.

Paul J James: _, Uniper Technologies Limited

Paul James has more than 30-years of experience in the Materials & Corrosion Team at Uniper Technologies Limited, Nottingham. Aside undertaking routine failure investigations, condition monitoring assessments and site-based surveys on a broad spectrum of boiler designs and fuel types based both in the UK and worldwide. Within this role, Paul regularly advises generating stations on the optimum tube replacement strategies, with a complementary responsibility for producing longer term review and risk assessment documents. He is also a member of German VGB groups for both “Conventional and HRSG Boiler Plant” and “Circulating Fluidised Bed Boiler Plant. 

DJ Marks: _, Uniper Technologies Limited

David Marks has more than 14 years of experience in the investigation of component failures across a range of industries. Since joining the Materials & Corrosion team at Uniper Technologies 7 years ago, in addition to dealing with failures more generally across all generating plant (from wind turbines to thermal generation), David has been involved in all aspects of boiler tube failure management, ensuring customers achieve an optimal solution when faced with tube leaks.

Jake Waterhouse: Director, DEKOMTE

Jake Waterhouse trained with Allen Gears (within Rolls-Royce Industrial Power Group) and completed a Bachelors of Engineering (BEng Hons) degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Birmingham City University. In Allen Gears, he worked as a sales, applications and project engineer for main drive parallel shaft and epicyclic gearboxes. In 2004 he joined DEKOMTE operations in the UK, and is now responsible for managing and developing the UK expansion joint business. Since 2011 he has been on the corporate board of DEKOMTE with responsibility for all international business. As a chartered engineer, Jake uses technical ability to deliver specialised solutions tailored to the customers' requirements.

James Horton: Senior Engineer, Frazer-Nash Consultancy

James Horton has worked in Frazer-Nash's thermo-fluid groups for 9 years. During this time he has worked on and managed a wide range of projects across industries and throughout assets' lifecycles, predominantly related to problems with complex fluid and thermo dynamics and corrosion protection. He is particularly used to developing and executing fit-for-purpose approaches to projects that range from first principal hand calculations to complex fluid dynamic simulations.

Julie A Brown: Stainsby Brown Associates, Director

Julie Brown is a Metallurgist and Chartered Engineer with 32 year's experience in power and process plant metallurgy. She has a B.Sc in Engineering Metallurgy (1985) from the University of Salford and a Ph.D. (2000) from the University of Manchester; the latter in relation to the refurbishment of gas turbine blades. For the past 20 years she has been acting as an independent Consultant and has had extensive involvement with her clients' boilers, pressure vessels and pressure piping. This has encompassed the technical aspects of procurement, inspection, maintenance and repair, with emphasis on safe operation and compliance.

Ian Graham: SCR Project Engineering Manager, Doosan Babcock

Graham Welford: Sales Manager, Doosan Babcock

Graham Welford leads biomass and other retrofit sales activities within Doosan Babcock, covering integrated power blocks, biomass conversions, boiler pressure part upgrades, combustion upgrades and low NOx solutions including SCR and SNCR. The role builds on 18 years in Doosan Babcock, previously specialising in the company’s “Babcock” boiler. Graham’s background is in technical development. He started at Doosan in R&D for supercritical boilers, gasification and advanced technologies, a natural move from British Coal where he had managed development teams in the areas of pressurised gasification, CFBC boilers, stokers and other high efficiency coal developments.

Makesh Kaliyaperumal: Principal Engineer, Doosan Babcock

Makesh Kaliyaperumal has been working in the Power Industry for over two decades.  Initially worked in the industry as a Power Plant Commissioning Engineer with specialisation on Fossil fuels, Agro waste and Petcoke firing on Atmospheric and Circulating fluidised bed combustion boiler technologies.  Makesh moved into Process Design Department within Thermax Babcock and Wilcox in India prior to joining Doosan Babcock Ltd, UK in 2010. Makesh currently works as a Principal Engineer within Process and Systems Analysis, Doosan Boiler Europe R&D Centre. In recent years, he has been working on low carbon technologies, principally biomass fuel conversions and Oxy-fuel CCS technology development.

Ragi Panesar: Acting Group Head, Boiler Business Group, Doosan Babcock

Ragi Panesar is Function Head of Process & Systems Analysis Group within Doosan Boiler Europe R&D Centre based in Renfrew, Scotland. He joined Doosan in 1989 and his entire professional life has been connected with steam raising plant.  He has extensive experience in sub-critical and once-through supercritical boiler design. Currently he is responsible for maintaining, developing and managing the Group, comprising of twenty professional engineers, with required Boiler OEM competency to fulfil business strategies and support operational activities.  Ragi is Doosan’s Technical Authority on Boiler Process providing support on commercial proposals and contractual performance guarantees including a range of tailored solutions from low to high co-firing and full conversions of biomass into existing coal-fired power generation infrastructure.

Rene M Suesstrunk: _, Hitachi Zosen Inova

René Suesstrunk started his career as a commissioning engineer for thermal turbo-machines after having graduated in B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering. From 1988 until 1995 he was the Head of the Customer Support Services of a market leader in the textile machinery business and got his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. In 1995 he moved to Hitachi Zosen Inova AG as Head of Site Management & Commissioning and was appointed PM of the new EFW plant of Bergen, Norway two years later. After plant takeover, he was promoted into the executive position of the department Site- & Project-Management. Since 2011 he has been responsible for the BU Service at HZI.

Jeremy Douglas: Engineering Practice Leader – Construction and Renewable Energy, Technical Lines, Chubb

Jerry Douglas currently works as Engineering Practice Leader for Chubb Insurance, London. He was originally trained as a Marine Engineering Officer in the UK Merchant Navy before moving to Rolls-Royce Marine Power at Dounreay and then Derby, working on nuclear submarine stream raising plant power systems and reactor control systems. He moved into insurance engineering in 1988, eventually specialising in Energy from Waste plants, concentrating mainly on design of fire systems on plants under construction. He is the author of a series of Guidance Documents on fire systems for EfW, biomass and related subjects.

Alan Fitzpatrick: Risk Engineer, CNA Hardy

Alan Fitzpatrick is a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Environmentalist and works for CNA, an International Insurance Company specialising in Power Generation and Renewable Energy. Prior to this his career spanned 37 years working as an Engineering Officer for Cunard Steam Ship Company ,an Engineer Survey, then Head Office Engineer for RSA. His role with the insurance companies has had many challenges and rewards but it is working with professional engineers that makes the job so interesting.

Marcus Whitworth: Head of Capture & Tendering TSB Europe, GE Power

 Marcus Whitworth serves as Head of Capture & Tendering TS Boiler Europe at GE Power, Power Services, where he leads a team of sales and tendering managers for handling ‘complex boiler’ and ‘engineered solution’ offers. He has over fourteen years of experience in the power industry. Prior to his current position he has held different assignments in Sales, Product & Project Management within Alstom Power AG that also included new products to market initiatives and was working as Regional Sales Manager Germany for Josef BERTSCH Gesellschaft m.b.H. & CO. KG. He has extensive experience in boiler / mill products and firing systems. Marcus holds a MBA in international business from the University of East London.

Marco Re: Sales Director Low-NOx Europe, GE Power

Marco Re’s career has been built over 10 years’ international experience gained in the power generation industry and has been characterized by rising demands in terms of legislation and ever more complex technical solutions. After graduation the work assignments of Marco encompassed the project management of numerous new-build PP contracts at Steinmüller Babcock Company and at Oschatz Company, accomplishing various tasks at rising levels of responsibility. Marco’s primary role at GE Power, Power Services, has latterly become the sales direction of retrofit projects for compliance with latest and future emission regulations, leading an innovative and highly qualified engineers’ team constantly called to seek and shape the best available technology. Marco holds a MSc in Industrial Engineering from Politecnico di Torino, a MBA from Politecnico di Milano, and is a Chartered Engineer in Italy, Germany and UK.

Matthew Lee : • Boiler, Auxiliaries and Structures Group Head, RWE NPower

Matthew Lee has 30 years of experience in the Power Industry, initially in laboratory failure investigations over a broad range of power plant, specialising in pressure equipment, subsequently he has supported Stations in broader plant life management, including assisting in the design and assessment of modification and operational changes.  He has worked as a consulting engineer in pressure systems both within the UK and internationally. Matthew is responsible for leading a team of engineers responsible for assisting individual locations on Boiler, Civil and Balance of Plant, mechanical issues. Including failure investigation / RCA,  Risks Analysis/integrity management, inspection programmes, production of specifications and project engineering; including pressure part modifications, CCGT replanting and furnace modifications for Nox control. Matthew has a wide understanding of power plant process and mechanical design understanding both on conventional and CCGT plant.  He has contributed to Industry forums BSI, EEMUA and GENSIP establishing good practice guidance in a number of areas related to pressure systems and integrity management.
