The RAIB will be pleased to welcome delegates to IRAIC to visit our offices at Cullen House, near Farnborough in Hampshire, on Thursday 17 November between 10:00 and 15:00. Visitors will be able to meet RAIB staff including the Deputy Chief Inspector and other inspectors (investigators), who will be able to describe our working methods, demonstrate our equipment and facilities, and talk about some recent investigations and particular areas of safety management and technology that RAIB is interested in. We will provide a buffet lunch for visitors.

We would like to encourage visitors to arrive as soon after 10:00 as possible. There are suitable trains from London Waterloo direct to Farnborough at 09:09 and 09:12, and taxis are available at Farnborough station for the journey to Cullen House (about 4.6 miles (7.4 km)).

Bart Accou: Head of Methods, Infrabel

As a civil engineer, Bart started his career at the Belgian railways (SNCB) in 1993, with the construction of the Eurostar terminal in the Brussels-Midi station. In 1994 he joined SNCB’s internal audit team where he reported to the CEO and the Board on procurement and other operational processes. From 2005 on he was responsible for the team that was auditing the safety management systems of both Infrabel (the Belgian infrastructure manager) and SNCB.
Bart joined the European Railway Agency in September 2008 as project officer, working on classifying railway accident causes and guidance for writing accident investigation reports. In October 2009 he became head of the safety certification sector, in charge of the harmonisation of NSA and NIB activities, running their European network and developing an assessment scheme for monitoring their activities.

Since June 2013 Bart is Head of Methods for Infrabel, the Belgian Infrastructure Manager, where he is developing and implementing an integrated risk management system.

John Stewart: Principal Inspector, RAIB

John Stewart is a Principal Inspector with the RAIB, leading a team of accident investigators. The team is multidisciplinary and investigates a wide range of railway accidents. John has worked for the RAIB for the last 11 years. Prior to joining the RAIB, he spent 10 years working for a UK train manufacturer, holding a selection of posts relating to product safety, reliability and validation.

Prior to joining the railway industry in 1996, he was involved in nuclear safety and reliability projects in the UK and Europe for over 10 years. He is a mechanical engineer, with an MSc in nuclear reactor technology.

Paul Sledzik: Acting Deputy Director, Office of Safety Recommendations and Communications, NTSB

Paul Sledzik is Acting Deputy Director of the NTSB’s Office of Safety Recommendations and Communications which provides information to a range of stakeholders regarding NTSB investigations, activities, and safety recommendations. These stakeholders include victims of transportation accidents and their families, the press, the public, and Federal, state, and local government officials. From 2010 to 2015, Paul lead the NTSB Transportation Disaster Assistance Division which coordinates family assistance in all modes of transportation in conjunction with local, state, and federal agencies, non-governmental agencies, and transportation operators. The division has responded to over 150 transportation accidents since it was created in 1996.

Brian Tomlinson: Director of Risk, Analysis & Assurance, Network Rail

Tomlinson is the Director of Risk, Analysis & Assurance at Network Rail and has over 25 years’ experience working in the rail industry. Brian is a Chartered Engineer and has overall responsibility for Network Rail’s accident investigation framework and the management of recommendations. He is also responsible for assurance, risk management, reporting, analysis and modelling in relation to safety, health, environment and engineering.
