Overview

Industry, academia and clinical practice unite on the latest work in upper limb surgery and rehabilitation and diagnostic technologies.

With the increased urbanisation of society and a growing, ageing, population, upper limb pathology, including conditions of ageing, trauma, and neurological conditions, are increasing in number and clinical significance.

The numbers of joint replacements and soft-tissue surgical procedures have increased dramatically over the past decade, advances in prostheses have resulted in headlines heralding the new age of robotic hands, and rehabilitation technologies, including functional electrical stimulation, are used routinely and extensively.

Interaction between engineers and clinicians is vital to enhance surgical execution, design, functionality and rehabilitation technologies.

Engineering the Upper Limb brings together key leaders in upper limb research: from industry, academia and clinical practice, both from the UK and internationally, to provide a forum on the future development of devices and technologies for the treatment of upper limb pathologies.

Professor Rory O'Connor: Head of the Section of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Leeds and Director, Charterhouse Rehabilitation Technologies

Rory O’Connor is the Charterhouse Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine and Head of the Section of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Leeds. He is Director of the Charterhouse Rehabilitation Technologies Laboratory.

Rory is joint lead for student education in the Institute of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Medicine. Rory is an honorary consultant physician in rehabilitation medicine and lead clinician in rehabilitation medicine at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trusts. He is joint rehabilitation lead to the NIHR Healthcare Technology Co-operative, Devices for Dignity (D4D) at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. With funding from EPSRC, AHRC, NIHR, the Meningitis Trust and other charities, he leads a multidisciplinary team to deliver game-changing rehabilitation research.

He has a track record in designing, developing and testing healthcare technology. His research has been awarded the 2009 Limbless Association Prize, the 2006 Prix from the Académie Européenne de la Médecine Physique et de Réadaptation and the 2003 Philip Nichols Prize from the British Society of Rehabilitation Medicine.

Rory is part of three EPSRC networks, working with a wide range of experts from academia, industry and the NHS. He is a member of NICE’s Medical Technologies Advisory Committee and was a member of the NICE stroke guideline development group from 2010 to 2013. He chaired the national committee for Rehabilitation Medicine training at the Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board from 2010 to 2016 and was Honorary Secretary of the British Society of Rehabilitation Medicine from 2009 to 2013.

Professor Dario Farina: Founding Director, Institute of Neurorehabilitation Systems, University Medical Center Göttingen, Georg-August University, Germany

Dario Farina has been the Founding Director of the Institute of Neurorehabilitation Systems at the University Medical Center Göttingen, Georg-August University, Germany, since 2010.

Previously he has been Full Professor in Motor Control and Biomedical Signal Processing at Aalborg University, Denmark. He has also been the Chair for NeuroInformatics of the Bernstein Focus Neurotechnology Göttingen in 2010-2015 and the President of the International Society of Electrophysiology and Kinesiology (ISEK) in 2012-2014. He was the recipient of the 2010 IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Early Career Achievement Award, a Distinguished Lecturer IEEE EMBS in 2014-2015, and an ERC Advanced Grantee (2011-2016).

He is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and of the European Alliance for Medical and Biological Engineering and Science (EAMBES). His research focuses on neurorehabilitation technology, neural control of movement, and biomedical signal processing and modelling. Within these areas, Dario has co-authored more than 360 papers in peer-reviewed journals and over 400 among conference papers/abstracts, book chapters, and encyclopedia contributions. He has been the co-editor of the IEEE/Wiley books Introduction to Neural Engineering for Motor Rehabilitation (2013) and Surface Electromyography: Physiology, Engineering and Applications (2016). He is the current Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology and an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering and of The Journal of Physiology.

Dr Wendy Murray: Associate Professor / Director, Northwestern University / Applied Research in Musculoskeletal Simulation (ARMS), Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago

Wendy Murray is an Associate Professor at Northwestern University with appointments in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences. She is the Director of the Applied Research in Musculoskeletal Simulation (ARMS) laboratory at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, where she is appointed as a Research Scientist. Wendy also holds an appointment as a Research Health Scientist at the Edward Hines VA Medical Center.

Wendy received her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Notre Dame in 1990. She obtained her MS and PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University. She completed post-doctoral training in Biomedical Engineering at the Cleveland FES Center at Case Western Reserve University, where she was named an NIDRR Mary Switzer Fellow. From 2000 to 2006, she developed an NIH-funded research program as an independent investigator for the Department of Veterans Affairs at the VA Palo Alto. She joined the Northwestern faculty in 2007. The foundation for Dr. Murray’s work is the development of biomechanical models that accurately represent the mechanical actions of the upper extremity muscles. The models and corresponding anatomical databases that Dr. Murray has shared with the scientific community have been cited hundreds of times. The main thrust of her current research is the application of these models to better understand and ultimately, to help improve function of the disabled upper limb.

Her work has relevance over a broad scope, including basic motor control, the design of control systems for exoskeletons and upper limb prosthetics, restoration of hand and arm function following cervical spinal cord injury, rehabilitation of hand and arm function following stroke, orthopaedic interventions for osteoarthritis, and prevention of injuries in baseball pitching. In addition to the NIH and VA investigator-initiated award funding that has enabled her research program to thrive, the trainees in her program have been awarded pre and post-doctoral fellowships from NIH, NSF, the Neilsen Foundation, and the American Heart Association. She is a member-at-large of the Executive Board of the US National Committee on Biomechanics and is President-Elect of the American Society of Biomechanics.

Bernhard Graimann: Head of Translational Research, Ottobock

Bernhard Graimann is the Head of Translational Research and Knowledge Management, Leading Expert of Neurotechnology, and member of the board of R&D management at Otto Bock HealthCare GmbH, Germany. He is member of the board of the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience Göttingen and a member of the board of the Össur-Ottobock Research Fund. Bernhard is also a lecturer at the Graz University of Technology, Austria and at the Medical University Göttingen, Germany.

Bernhard received his Dipl-Ing. in information and computer engineering from the Graz University of Technology in 1999. He obtained his PhD in biomedical engineering and his habilitation (venia docendi) in applied computer science from the Graz University of Technology in 2002 and 2006, respectively. From 2002 to 2006, he worked as a PostDoc at the BCI Lab, Graz University of Technology and from 2006 to 2008 as a Marie-Curie fellow at the Institute of Automation, University of Bremen, Germany. His main research focus in this period was on brain-computer interfaces and bio-signal processing for man-machine interfaces. In 2008, he changed from academia to industry and started to work for Otto Bock HealthCare.

Translational research at Otto Bock HealthCare is defined as applied research that increases the readiness level of technologies, knowledge and expertise in order to facilitate the development of new and viable products or services. Translational research is an integral part of innovation management at Otto Bock HealthCare, where it is often done in form of research collaborations with external partners from academia and industry. Bernhard is the head of these activities. In this position, he has designed and coordinated a considerable number of successful national and international research collaborations.
