Overview

Whilst joint replacement surgery is, in the most part, a highly successful operation, it is estimated that up to 1 in 5 of patients are not satisfied following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Treatments for knee disease, pain and trauma tend to fail preferentially at the interfaces.

This two-day conference will provide a forum for leaders in the field and early career researchers to discuss the latest innovative technologies and approaches for improving knee interfaces. The event will also address the communication challenges between researchers and the patients and healthcare professionals their research aims to serve.

Biomechanical engineers and clinical researchers investigating the knee, will come together to address studies that examine knee interfaces. These studies will include modular and articulating implant components, implants and the body, and the role of key stakeholders. This event will improve your understanding of both the technological and clinical challenges facing the industry today.

Alex Dickenson: RAEng Research Fellow, University of Southampton

Alex is a mechanical engineer with 14 years’ experience in biomedical engineering. He started work in industry with Finsbury Orthopaedics Ltd., in hip arthroplasty pre-clinical analysis and testing. He has an academic position at the University of Southampton lecturing engineering design and computing, and holds an RAEng Research Fellowship entitled ‘Developing, Testing and Fitting the Next Generation of Prosthetic Limbs’. He is most motivated by multidisciplinary work with clinicians, health scientists and industry, aiming to deliver research that is relevant to service users, and technologies which are fit-for-purpose. Alex sits on the board of the IMechE’s Biomedical Engineering Division (BmED). He is Associate Editor (Reviews) at the IPEM journal Medical Engineering & Physics, and a STEM Ambassador

Andre Attard: PhD Student, University of Strathclyde

Andre Attard did his undergraduate studies at the University of Malta, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He then worked as a Research and Development engineer, where his interest in research developed. Following his industrial experience, he moved to Scotland, where he pursued and obtained a Masters in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde. During his Masters he studied lower-limb biomechanics, which has since been his passion. Currently, he is in his final stages of his doctorate at the University of Strathclyde. His work focuses on the development of a new method of capturing and analysing knee biomechanics.

Dr Raelene M Cowie: Research Fellow, Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, University of Leeds

Supervised by Dr Louise Jennings my research focusses primarily on the biotribology of knee prostheses. Experimental simulation has been used to investigate the wear performance of a novel all-polymer knee implant and methodologies have been developed to deliver more rigorous pre-clinical tests to replacement joints under conditions which recreate the wear and damage seen in vivo. This research is translational, being primarily funded by external industry collaborations. The simulation methods and analysis techniques which were originally developed for artificial materials are now being transferred to natural joints.

Emma Kennard Ritchie : PhD Student, Newcastle University

Emma is a Mechanical Engineering PhD Candidate at Newcastle University and is awaiting viva examination. Emma holds an MSc in Medical Engineering from Leeds University and a BEng in Mechanical Engineering from Edinburgh University. After gaining 10 years professional experience within new product development project management and business consulting, Emma returned to academic research in 2011to undertake a part-time PhD. Emma’s research is concerned with the surface topographical analysis of explanted knee replacement prostheses. Emma’s work has established a collection of explanted knee replacement prostheses catalogued at Newcastle University.

Ioan Cracaoanu: Research and Test engineer, DePuy Synthes

Ioan Cracaoanu is research and test engineer at DePuy Synthes. He holds a PhD in Tribology from University of Twente, The Netherlands. Previous joining DePuy Synthes he worked as a tribologist for Bosch and Philips in the Netherlands. He is certified as a CEng IMechE mechanical engineer and specialized in Tribology with more than 12 years experience in automotive, aerospace, high precision systems, consumer products and orthopaedic industries. In current role, he is involved in knee and hip implants.

Keith Tucker: Chairman, ODEP and the Beyond Compliance Advisory Group

Richard Cook: New Frontiers Fellow, University of Southampton

Dr. Richard Cook is a New Frontiers fellow within the national Centre for Advanced Tribology at Southampton (nCATS). His expertise lies in the nanomechanical, tribological and tribocorrosive characterisation of biomaterials and biological materials and also implant performance evaluation. Dr. Cook has undertaken a implant evaluation for a number of companies and is part of the Beyond Compliance Implant retrieval alliance. Dr. Cook is the manager of the EPSRC funded nanomechanical and tribological testing facility at Southampton (EP/K00509X/1 and EP/K005103/1).

Junyan Li: Senior Lecturer, Middlesex University

Dr. Junyan Li is a Senior Lecturer at Middlesex University. He is the Tribology Bronze Medallist awarded by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) in 2014. He is the organiser of the 2018 UK-China Researcher Links Workshop, bringing together over 50 researchers from the UK and China to foster collaboration in the topic of “Design and advanced manufacturing of patient-specific implant”. His research includes definition of different disease stages of articular joints, optimisation and stratification of treatments and medical devices, development of new method to allow for more accurate and systematic biomechanical investigation of musculoskeletal system.

Lindsay Millar: Post-doctoral Research Associate, University of Strathclyde

Lindsay Millar is a post-doctoral research associate at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. Her research interests include functional outcome following total/unicompartmental knee replacement, the effects of virtual reality feedback in clinical rehabilitation, furthering the use of objective movement measurement systems in routine clinical practice and use of smart devices/wearable technology for diagnosis/screening of childhood disorders.

Shannen Chacko Rajan: PhD Student, Newcastle University

Shannen Chacko Rajan is a third year Ph.D. engineering student at Newcastle University working on failure analysis of explanted knee prostheses. The work is mainly focused on how the in vivo changes in roughness, wear and material characteristics affect the longevity of the implants. Also if any correlation exists between the tribological results obtained for the explants and patient-implant demographics.

Ruth Wilcox: Director of the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, University of Leeds

Prof Wilcox’s research interests lie in the development and testing of medical devices for musculoskeletal disorders using both experimental and computational methods. She trained as a mechanical engineer at Oxford and Leeds, and has held fellowships from the Royal Academy of Engineering and European Research Council. She currently leads an EPSRC Programme Grant in Optimising Knee Therapies. Prof Wilcox works closely with industry and clinicians in the development of new interventions and improved pre-clinical testing methods. She is a member of the Royal Academy of Engineering Panel for Biomedical Engineering.
