Michael Bunce: Head of Research, MAHLE Powertrain LLC

Michael Bunce is the Head of Research at MAHLE Powertrain in the US. His background includes alternative fuels and advanced combustion programs. Since joining MAHLE Powertrain in 2012 he has led the research activities on MAHLE Jet Ignition, a primary topic in MAHLE Powertrain’s US research portfolio. Prior to working for MAHLE Powertrain, he was a Post-Graduate Researcher at Oak Ridge National Lab.

Tao Chen: Tianjin University, Brunel University London

Dr. Tao Chen is an Associate Professor at Tianjin University, China. He got his Ph.D in power machinery and engineering from Tianjin University in 2010. His current research is focused on high-dilution low-temperature combustion in gasoline engine and powertrain control theory. He has joined the research projects of National Key Basic Research Plan and National Nature Science Foundation of China. Dr. Tao Chen has author/co-authored more than 20 research papers in Chinese and English.

Roscoe Sellers: Chief Engineer, Ricardo UK Ltd

Roscoe Sellers is a Chief Engineer within the Technical Consulting group at Ricardo and leads a range of customer and research projects focussing on advanced propulsion technology. He has been at Ricardo for nearly 20 years and is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Mike Bassett: Chief Engineer, Research & Advanced Engineering, MAHLE Powertrain GmbH

Mike Bassett graduated from Bristol University in 1993, where he studied Mechanical Engineering. He then studied for a PhD at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST,) focusing on the 1D modelling of internal combustion engines. Mike joined Lotus Engineering in 2000, where he worked in the Software Development Department. He moved to MAHLE Powertrain in 2007 to join the performance analysis group and is currently the Chief Engineer of the Research and Advanced Engineering Group, where he is responsible for leading MAHLE Powertrain’s research activities in the UK.

Andy Ward: Head of Core R&D, Ricardo Ltd

Andy Ward is Head of Core R&D at Ricardo UK, a global engineering consultancy employing over 2700 engineers around the world, where he is responsible for R&D across a wide range of technologies including electrified powertrains, batteries, thermal propulsion systems and fuel cells for a wide range of market applications including motorcycles through to heavy duty, rail and marine. He graduated from Loughborough University in 1994 with a first class honours degree in Mechanical Engineering. He then joined Ricardo located in Shoreham on the South coast of England where he has remained for the last 25 years and has never got bored! He spent 10 years working in powertrain noise and vibration with a passion for developing quieter engines and transmissions before moving to a customer facing role as a Chief Engineer in the Engines Product Group. In the last 4 years, his focus has been on researching and developing technologies for clean, safe and low cost transportation in the short to medium term.

Dario Di Maio: Ph.D. fellow, Istituto Motori CNR

Dario Di Maio received the M.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering at Polytechnic University of Turin, Italy, in 2017. He was an Erasmus+ student in Industrial Engineering at ETSEIB – UPC, Barcelona, Spain. Currently he is a second year Ph.D. fellow in Energy Science and Engineering at CNR - Istituto Motori, Naples, in cooperation with University of Naples Parthenope, Italy. His research activity focuses on development of reliable and predictive numerical models of Aftertreatment systems for Internal Combustion Engines.

Konstantina Vogiatzaki: Principal Lecturer, University of Brighton

Konstantina Vogiatzaki is Associate Professor at the University of Brighton, EPSRC Innovation Fellow and member of the Advanced Engineering Centre – a centre dedicated to high-efficiency internal combustion engine (ICE) research. Her research lies in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). She develops high fidelity numerical algorithms that can be used as part of virtual manufacturing tools of future energy systems. For her work to date she has been awarded the prestigious Bernard Lewis Fellowship by the Combustion Institute in 2010 as well as the Hinshelwood Prize which recognises meritorious work by a young member of the British Section of the Combustion Institute.

Robert Morgan: Professor, University of Brighton

Robert Morgan is a Professor in the Sir Harry Ricardo Laboratories within the Advanced Engineering Centre. He joined the university in 2012 after 20 years in industry first at Ricardo, then Ceres Power and finally as Chief Technical Officer at Highview Power Storage. He secured over £25M of research income in industry and £5M since joining the university. Professor Morgan is joint secretary to the Universities’ Internal Combustion Engines Group (UnICEG) and a member of the IMechE Powertrain Systems and Fuels Group. He was director of the APC Thermal Efficiency spoke until 2017 and is now Assistant Head of the Advanced Engineering Centre.

Graham Evans: Associate Director, Supply Chain and Technology, IHS Markit

Graham is Associate Director, Supply Chain and Technology within the Automotive department at IHS Markit. He leads the global research practice for Powertrain and E-Mobility Component Forecasting. His research interests lie in the areas of batteries, motors, power electronics, charging infrastructure, legislation and incentives, as well as conventional powertrain components and technologies such as exhaust aftertreatment. He is also Manager of the EMEA Research & Analysis team. Previously employed within Engineering, Graham has 10 years’ experience in Powertrain Development and Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) having previously worked for Ricardo, Bentley Motors and Jaguar Land Rover. He graduated from Loughborough University in the UK with a Master’s Degree in Automotive Engineering and is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Michael Southcott: Senior Technical Research Analyst, IHS Markit

Michael Southcott is a Senior Technical Research Analyst within the Automotive department at IHS Markit focusing on Powertrain & e-mobility components. His research areas lie predominantly in the conventional Powertrain components such as fuel injectors, turbochargers and exhaust aftertreatment strategies globally. Prior to joining IHS Markit, Michael was employed within the automotive engineering industry, working for Ford Motor Company as a powertrain development engineer and delphi diesel systems as a systems integration engineer, both roles with a heavy focus on diesel engines. He graduated from City University London in 2013 with a 1st Class MEng degree in Mechanical engineering. "

Matthew Davidson: Professor of Sustainable Chemical Technologies and Director of the Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies, University of Bath

Matthew Davidson is Whorrod Professor of Sustainable Chemical Technologies and Director of the Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies at the University of Bath, UK. His research focuses on the application of catalysis to sustainable chemical processes such as manufacture of renewable fuels, chemicals and plastics. He received a PhD from the University of Cambridge and following a Research Fellowship at St John’s College, Cambridge, he held Lectureships in Chemistry at the University of Cambridge and Durham University. In 1999 he was appointed to a Chair of Chemistry at Bath. He has held a Royal Society Industry Fellowship, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a previous recipient of its Harrison Memorial Prize.

Derick Adu-Mensah: Student, Jiangsu University

Derick graduated from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana in 2016 where he studied Materials Engineering. He is currently pursuing his master’s degree in the school of Automotive and Traffic Engineering, Jiangsu University, China. He is majoring in Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics and his research work is about investigating the Effect of Hydrogenated Biodiesel on Engine Performance, Combustion and Emission Characteristics in Diesel Engine.

Irene Ruiz-Rodriguez: PhD Candidate, Brunel University London

Irene Ruiz-Rodriguez received her MEng degree in Aerospace Engineering from Brunel University London, UK, in 2016 and is currently a PhD candidate at the same University. Her research interests include sprays and combustion fundamentals, and optical analysis and diagnostics. She is an associate member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (AMIMechE) and an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).

Lili Lu: Student, Tianjin University

Lu Lili is a Ph.D. student at the State Key Laboratory of Internal Combustion Engines at Tianjin University. At present, the first year of doctoral research, the main research direction is the combustion and spray impingement of internal combustion engines.One SCI article and several conference articles have been published.

Phil Roberts: Principle Engineer-Global Development & Application Centre, HORIBA MIRA

Phil is a charted engineer with a PhD in fundamental engine combustion from the University of Leeds, England. He has worked for JCB Power Systems in mainstream diesel engine development and calibration and Jaguar Land Rover in Powertrain Research looking after gasoline combustion research using single cylinder thermodynamic and optical research engines. He currently works at HORIBA MIRA as a Principal Engineer responsible for all technical input for customer engine development projects as well as the technical lead for engine development, calibration and Engine-in-the-Loop activities within the RDE+ programme.

Heather Hamje: Science Executive, Concawe

Heather Hamje did her first degree at Glasgow University in the Department of Chemistry, followed by a D.Phil. in Materials Science and Engineering at Oxford University. She has spent nearly thirty years in the oil industry in Europe and in the US working for ExxonMobil on fuels and biofuels in the areas of gasoline technology, diesel additives and product development and testing of the full range of distillate products including heating oil and marine fuels. In her current role she is based in Brussels and is the Science Executive for Fuel Quality and Emissions at Concawe who do environmental research on behalf of the European refining industry.

Kukwon Cho: Senior Technical Specialist, Aramco Services Company, Aramco Research Centre-Detroit

Kukwon Cho got a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor on 2003 under the direction of Prof. Assanis and Prof. Filipi. Currently, he is working for Aramco Research Center - Detroit as a senior technical specialist for 6 years. His main research area is fuel/engine co-optimization and combustion strategy development of gasoline compression ignition combustion mode. Before he joined Aramco Research Center, he had worked for Oak Ridge National Laboratory as a research staff for 6 years and for Cummins Tech Center as a senior engineer for 3 years.

Giovanni Vorraro: Research Fellow, PVRC, University of Bath

Dr Giovanni Vorraro is a Research Fellow at the Powertrain and Vehicle Research Centre of the University of Bath. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Naples “Federico II” where his research was focused on the experimental and numerical assessment of the performance of automotive turbochargers. Dr Vorraro is interested in innovative Internal Combustion Engines, Boosting systems and Vehicles Electrification. During his Ph.D. he also led a side project on the development of new generation electric bikes. Currently Dr Vorraro is working on the ADAPT-IPT project developing a Wankel engine to be employed as a range extender for hybrid vehicles.

Mario Farrugia: Assistant Professor, University of Malta

Mario Farrugia graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Malta in 1992. He then worked with Enemalta at Delimara Power Station till 2000. His contribution at Enemalta include work on Phase 2A and Phase 2B extension projects at Delimara. During 1995/6, Farrugia followed a masters degree in Mechatronics at Hull University UK. In 2001 he took an assistantship at Oakland University, Rochester Michigan, and started reading for PhD. At Oakland University he worked both as teaching assistant and also research assistant and was mentored and supervised by Dr Brian Sangeorzan and Dr Alex Alkidas. The doctoral dissertation was titled ""Transient Surface Heat Flux Measurements in a Straight Pipe Extension of the Exhaust Port of a Spark Ignition Engine"" and won the 2007 SAE Myers award. Farrugia has been active in Formula SAE since 2001 at Oakland University where he also mentored a number of students. Later, at the University of Malta he was academic adviser for FSAE team that designed and built the first University of Malta vehicle. This team successfully competed in the 2007 Formula ATA (FSAE Series) at the Ferrari Fiorano racetrack, Italy. He also mentored the 2014 and 2015 FSAE teams including 1D engine simulation.

Carl Caruana: Student, University of Malta

Carl Caruana graduated in Mechanical Engineering from University of Malta in 2016. After which he followed a Masters Degree in Engineering at the same university, specializing in mechanical friction determination of IC engines. He is currently reading for a PhD with particular focus on mechanical friction and transient heat transfer in a pressurised motored engine under the supervision of Prof. Mario Farrugia. Carl was also active in Formula SAE between the years 2016 and 2017. He also teaches advanced level Physics at University of Malta International School for Foundation Studies.

Benjamin Waters: Lead Engineer; Performance and Emissions team, Changan UK R&D Centre Limited

Benjamin Waters’ initial combustion research started in the academic field with a UK based OEM. A move to industry followed to a UK motorcycle manufacturer where the performance and combustion system lead role was taken on a new engine series. His current role is with Changan as their performance lead engineer.

Martin Joyce: Engines Group Chief Engineer, Changan UK R&D Centre Limited

Martin Joyce joined Jaguar Cars in 1984 working for 14 years on 6, 8 & 12 cylinder engines. Then moved to the Vehicle Engineering, working on the X Type. He joined DENSO in 2003 leading EU Powertrain Engineering. In 2011, he joined Changan to lead the Engines department working on 3 & 4 cylinder engines.

Richard King: Chief Engineer, Performance Development, Ricardo Ltd

Richard has worked at Ricardo since graduating in 2001, focusing mainly on advanced engineering projects including closed-loop combustion control, advanced boosting systems, high-speed / high power-density Diesel combustion and boosted stratified DI gasoline optical engines. In 2006, he was the Engine Calibration Engineer for the UK runway tests of the JCB Dieselmax land speed record car, prior to its trip to the US. Most recently Richard has been leading the Ricardo development of the engine for the record breaking JCB World’s Fastest Tractor.

James Parnell: Applications Engineer, Cambustion Ltd

Jamie Parnell is an applications engineer at Cambustion Ltd, specialising in ultra-fast response gas analysers. Jamie is currently part of the team developing on-board portable RDE emissions measurement systems with millisecond response times, allowing measurement of real-world transients for engine calibration or air quality work. He earned his BEng and MEng from Loughborough University, United Kingdom in Automotive Engineering focusing on the effects of fuel injection parameters on emissions control in diesel engines.
