Overview
A large portion of UK nuclear power generation sites are due to be retired by the end of the decade, presenting asset management challenges at scale. This conference will address both the challenges of maintaining asset integrity beyond intended lifecycle and the process of decommissioning including planning, current state evaluation, services procurement, and funding.
Whether it be tackling part and technology obsolescence or allocating tight budgets on plants which are no longer operational and tackling complex plant prioritisation methodologies, the problem of nuclear asset management is a broad one. The increasing focus on effective data gathering and management for facilities with extensive operational histories will be targeted to ensure engineers are supported in future systems-based maintenance work.
Building on previous conferences, a large focus of the 2024 conference will be placed on the decommissioning process and concerns of planning, the impact of challenging environments, legacy waste and sustainably sourcing and disposing of materials. It will also incorporate asset management case studies from other high hazard industries so that cross sector learning may be effectively facilitated, and nuclear industry innovation encouraged.
CONFIRMED SPEAKERS INCLUDE:
- Paul Gibbons, AMCI Manager, Nuclear Decommissioning Authority
- Nick Deavin, Senior Maintenance Authority, AWE
- Colin Tait, Project Director – Well Informed Regulatory Decisions, Office for Nuclear Regulation
- Tim Ingram, Technical Director of Strategic Asset Management, AtkinsRéalis
- Robert Skilton, Head of Research, UK Atomic Energy Authority
- John Latimer, Fleet Obsolescence Lead, Engineering, Nuclear Services, EDF
- Dr Jefferson Ridgway, Chief Technology Officer, Ultra Nuclear
- Nick Jones, Project Manager for In-Vessel Decommissioning, UK Atomic Energy Authority
- Sarah Mundy, Senior Mechanical Engineer, Cavendish Nuclear
- Jennifer Maher, Principle Mechanical Engineer, Sellafield Ltd
KEY TOPICS TO BE COVERED INCLUDE:
Asset integrity for operating plants: Address challenges for effective testing, fault detection, maintenance and repair works to maintain and increase efficiency.
Maintaining non-operational assets: ensure equipment scheduled for decommissioning does not fail prior to the start of work.
Life extension for existing installations: understand and reduce the risks associated with pushing assets beyond their planned lifetimes.
Understand your regulatory obligations for ageing assets: how does current legislation impact equipment designed decades earlier and how can you meet these requirements in a cost-effective manner to ensure a return on investment.
Effective planning for decommissioning: understand the issues of decommissioning generating equipment and facilities that have degraded or been allowed to fall into disrepair, together with related safety and environmental responsibilities.
