Institution of Mechanical Engineers, London
Overview
The Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (RAF BBMF) is a national institution. Yet its aircraft are getting ever older. The lecture will describe the history and organisation of the Flight and the work carried out to maintain the airframes, engines and instrumentation of its aircraft in full flying condition. It will outline problems that occur while maintaining and operating ageing aircraft in a modern military airworthiness environment and give an insight into the aircraft’s safety case.
Presented by Warrant Officer Kevin Ball, Senior Engineering Officer, RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight
Kevin joined the RAF in 1980 and in over 32 years service he has built up extensive on and off aircraft experience at all levels including fast jet; multi engine and rotary wing platforms during many postings and detachments in the UK and overseas. Kevin holds delegated authority to defer corrective and preventive maintenance; authorizing aircraft limitations; acceptable deferred faults and maintenance extensions. He also has recent airworthiness; policy and change experience. Kevin has completed operational tours in the Falkland Islands and Iraq. In Sep 2012, he became the Senior Engineering Officer BBMF.
