The Institution welcomes the new Railway Division Chair, Chris Kinchin-Smith, who will explore the opportunities and challenges of growth in passenger demand on Britain’s railways.

• The sources of growth in rail passenger demand in Britain
• The opportunities and challenges presented by this growth
• Examples of and lessons learned from the achievement of transformation of passenger rail transport (and its perception) in Britain
• Inputs for the strategic narrative for the planning process for the period 2019 to 2024 (Control Period 6)
• Long term implications for rolling stock, electrification, other infrastructure and the supply chain
• Implications for the IMechE, in particular for the skills agenda
As is customary for the RD Chair’s Address, the lecture will include autobiographical threads and examples.
