Overview
In order to reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption of passenger cars, advanced direct injection gasoline engines have been developed and mass produced to replace the conventional port fuel injection gasoline engines. It is almost a century ago since the first direct injection gasoline engine was conceived and developed, though for a different reason and application from the current ones.
The historical background to the R&D of direct injection gasoline engines will be reviewed and the state-of-art GDI engines will be illustrated. The presentation will be concluded with an outlook to the future of advanced direct injection internal combustion engines.
