Overview
This presentation will address some of the challenges faced by the industry and in particular some of the mechanical, civil and structural engineering challenges of recreating the natural environment within the confines of a world leading test house.
In seeking to reduce the cost of Offshore Renewable Energy there are two fundamental drivers:
I. Upscaling the technology
II. Improving the reliability
An integral part of the technology development prior to full commercialisation and deployment is robust testing at full scale.
This is at the core of the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult’s (ORE Catapult) business philosophy and is the reason for making significant investment in facilities capable of recreating the effect of the natural environment on turbine components of up to 100M in length and 500 tonnes in weight.
