Overview
A Pragmatic Approach Towards a Sustainable Energy Future will be presented by Paul Younger, Rankine Professor of Engineering and Professor of Energy, University of Glasgow.
In addressing the challenges of ensuring security of energy supply and environmental protection are not in conflict, there is a danger of slipping into absolutist positions in which the achievable ‘good’ is rejected in favour of an unachievable ‘perfect’. What can engineers do to break the impasse? Comprehensive future sustainable energy scenarios will only be realised by taking steps that are viable: technically, economically and socially. Paul will navigate the various constraints and opportunities we are presented with to help us onto a path towards a sustainable energy future.
Paul’s talk is expected to be provocative and likely to stimulate a significant response from the audience. Therefore the talk will take up the first part of the evening and time will be allowed in the second part for a debate-style discussion chaired by Ian Arbon, who works with Paul Younger.
Refreshments will be served from: 17.30

Professor Paul Younger: Rankine Professor of Engineering and Professor of Energy, University of Glasgow
Professor Paul Younger FREng, Rankine Professor of Engineering and Professor of Energy at the University of Glasgow. He was previously at Newcastle University and his roots are very much in the coalfields of County Durham. Paul recently (Nov 2014) had his book “Energy – all that matters” published by John Murray Learning and it is typical of his practical approach and clear presentation. While Paul at times makes statements that appear much less ‘green’ than the normal fare in EESG, he presents a pragmatic (and engineered!) middle path between extremists on both sides. Paul cares passionately for the environment but doesn’t like what he sees as ‘intellectual dishonesty’ over what is actually achievable. Paul was also a named Contributor to IMechE’s recent report: Heat Energy: The Nation’s Forgotten Crisis.
