Overview

Hear the latest developments in the UK's application of the European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS) as the industry prepares for implementation.

ERTMS aims to replace the different national train control and command systems in Europe and is now being introduced in the UK. This will see the introduction across mainline routes from 2018 with advanced projects for integration onto rolling stock before that date.

This will have an effect on many interested members who work in the infrastructure, rolling stock and operations sectors.

The seminar will impart relevant knowledge from experts in signalling and CCS systems, to mechanical engineers who will be managing operations or assets shortly to be integrated or affected by ERTMS.

Martin Hayhoe: Business Development Director, Ricardo Rail

CHAIR:

Martin Hayhoe is an experienced T&RS engineer and has worked in asset management, assurance, enhancement and investment projects in the rail industry. He has previously held positions as head of engineering for rail consultancies, national fleet engineer for EMU’s, project manager for procurement and commissioning of new build multiple unit fleets and depot engineer for main line locomotive fleets.

Martin Arter: Programme Development Director - Digital Railway, Network Rail

KEYNOTE:

Martin Arter is an executive leader with a record of driving major business change, complex project and programme delivery, and functional leadership in the rail infrastructure, aerospace, power and shipbuilding industries. He was formally qualified in both engineering and project management with a breadth of experience spanning all phases of the programme lifecycle including design, engineering, manufacturing, construction, procurement, and contract acceptance. Martin has experience dealing in a wide range of countries, particularly the UK, South America, Europe and the Middle East at senior level with the UK Ministry of Defence, Office of Rail Regulation and other government bodies.

Farha Sheikh: Rail Digital Services, Infrastructure Safety and Security, Department for Transport

Farha Sheikh joined the railways in 1991 from British Steel as a graduate trainee with BREL, later to become Adtranz. After working for Railtrack in the mid-1990s, she returned to Adtranz (now Bombardier) as Test Manager for all new build rolling stock - primarily the Turbostars and Electrostars. Farha then left the manufacturing industry and joined the railway inspectorate as a specialist inspector dealing with rolling stock approvals. During her time with the HMRI she was seconded to the European Commission to work on the safety certification dossier and to support the development of the rail Safety Directive and the set-up of the European Railway Agency.

Peter Zijdemans: Senior Consultant ERTMS and Systems Engineering, Ricardo Rail

Peter Zijdemans has been supporting the Dutch operator of Thalys in rolling stock management, management of modifications and the set-up of ECM (Entity in Charge of Maintenance) since 2009. Peter was also responsible for the assembly of the admission file for Thalys in the Netherlands (1991-1996). With this experience, he supported the specification and demonstration of RAMS of HSL-South infrastructure using EN50126 (1997-2001). Once the transportation concession for HSL-South had been signed, Peter supported the operator HSA in the integration of ERTMS in Thalys train sets and the assembly of the admission file for HSL-South (2002-2009).

Andy Norris: Partner, CPC Project Services

Andy Norris is a partner with CPC Project Services – a niche project management and business consultancy. Andy has over 20 years of project management experience in the transport sector, predominately in overground rail – ranging from rolling stock, franchise bidding, devolution alliance through to delivery of major capital infrastructure projects. Andy is currently the Project Director for the National Joint ROSCO Project, involving Eversholt Rail, Porterbrook and Angel Trains, leading a team to procure and install First in Class, European Train Control Systems across 30 different rolling stock classes. This long term programme involves many industry stakeholders and is driven by Network Rail’s national signalling deployment plan.

Jean Koulischer: Innovations Manager, Signalling Solutions

Jean Koulischer has worked on ETCS signalling at Alstom for 15+ years and has followed most of the ETCS deployment all over the world. He has led tenders worldwide, and monitored trackside projects in Belgium and The Netherlands, as well as on-board projects mainly in Germany and Austria, working in close collaboration with DB and ÖBB. Jean is now working for Signalling Solutions, the Alstom subsidiary for Signalling business in the UK. His role is to transfer the ETCS experience from the continent to the UK. Signalling Solutions is deploying ETCS Level 2, Baseline 3, on the NR/Crossrail Paddington-Heathrow, as well as tendering on the ETCS on-board retro-fitment opportunities in the UK.
