Frank Clifton: Development Manager, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks

Ian Arbon: Ian Arbon, Energy, Environment & Sustainability Group, Institution of Mechanical Engineers

Ian Arbon is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, a Registered European Engineer and a Chartered Environmentalist, with an MSc in ‘Renewable Energy and the Environment’ and an MBA. Formerly MD of gas compressor suppliers: Howden Compressors Ltd, Caledonian Compressors Ltd and Peter Brotherhood Ltd, he now runs Engineered Solutions, a Sustainable Engineering consultancy, as well as being non-executive Chairman of Vert Rotors UK Ltd. Ian is a Fellow of IMechE; having chaired its Energy, Environment & Sustainability Group and its Renewable Power Committee, he is now spearheading the Institution’s work in Energy Storage (and Lead Author of its 2014 Report). He is also a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Energy Institute, the Institute of Refrigeration and the Institute of Engineers & Shipbuilders in Scotland; he has been a Visiting Professor in Alternative Energy at Newcastle University and Module Leader for ‘Energy Policies, Politics and Ethics’ on its REFLEX and REEM MSc courses since 2006; he has been an Honorary Professor in Sustainable Energy at the University of Glasgow since 2010 and also teaches on its Renewable Energy MSc courses, including sessions on gas compressors and expanders. Ian is also the author of two textbooks on gas compression technology.

Chris Stark: Director of Energy and Climate Change, Scottish Government

Chris Stark is Director of Energy and Climate Change in the Scottish Government, leading the development of Scotland’s approach to emissions-reduction and the accompanying energy system transition. His team provides advice to Scottish Ministers on all aspects of energy and climate policy – and on licensing and consent decisions for new onshore energy infrastructure. Chris previously headed the Strategy Unit, the Scottish Government’s central strategy team, and has worked in a number of Whitehall departments. He has wide experience of economic policymaking, in the Scottish Government, HM Treasury and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Michael Ashcroft: Innovation Strategy Manager, National Grid

Claire Addison: Government & Regulatory Affairs Manager, AES UK & Ireland

Claire leads the AES Corporation’s work on policy, regulations and stakeholder affairs in the UK and Ireland. She is currently primarily engaged in the acceleration of energy storage in GB and the island of Ireland, working with AES’ global Advancion® energy storage division. Claire initially joined AES’ onshore wind development team, and moved into her current role in 2015. Prior to joining AES, Claire spent eight years working for environmental NGOs in a range of policy and strategy roles.

Stuart Nelmes: Engineering Director, Highview Power Storage

Stuart joined Highview in June 2011 as Engineering Project Manager. After a period working for Delphi Diesel Systems developing common rail diesel pumps and injectors for medium duty automotive applications, Stuart joined Cofely District Energy Ltd (formerly Utilicom Ltd) as a Project Engineer and then Project Manager with a brief spell as Sustainable Energy Consultant within their commercial team. During his time as Project Manager, Stuart was instrumental in the construction and development of a number of the UK’s largest district energy schemes providing heating, cooling and electrical power across major cities such as London, Southampton, Birmingham and Manchester. Stuart has a First class Honours in Mechanical Engineering.

Carla Peterman: CPUC Commissioner, The California Public Utilities Commission

Carla J. Peterman is the California Public Utilities Commission’s (CPUC) assigned Commissioner for a number of proceedings including energy efficiency, alternative transportation, energy storage, and several rate cases. She was previously a Commissioner with the California Energy Commission where she was lead Commissioner for renewables, transportation, and natural gas. Commissioner Peterman holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Energy and Resources from The University of California Berkeley. She also earned a Master of Science degree and a Master of Business Administration degree from Oxford University, where she was a Rhodes Scholar. Commissioner Peterman holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from Howard University.

Paris Hadjiodysseos: Smart Grid Development Engineer, Northern Powergrid

Paris works as Smart Grid Development Engineer at Northern Powergrid, producing power system development policies to support the transition towards a smarter grid. Paris joined the company in 2013 and since then he mainly worked as a Design Engineer for various asset reinforcement and new connection projects ranging from 230V to 132kV. Paris is also responsible for leading and managing two innovation projects that monitor the behaviour and impact of a number of Low Carbon Technologies. Prior to joining Northern Powergrid, Paris previously worked for a leading ancillary service provider as a Systems Engineer. Paris has a BEng in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, an MSc in Electrical Power Systems and is currently studying for an MBA.

Seamus Garvey: Professor of Dynamics, University of Nottingham

Seamus Garvey is Professor of Dynamics at the University Of Nottingham since 2000. Since 2005, the single most important tenet of his energy research work has been that renewable energy harvesters of various sorts must be engineered with flexibility in mind. He is (/has-been) PI on eight different energy storage grants of which three current EPSRC grants feature this integration quite centrally. He is active in both developing technologies to facilitate such integration and trying to ensure that future commercial and policy environment does not preclude these integrated systems as the present environment does.
