Overview

As wheelsets are one of the most expensive consumables for the rail industry, it is vital that they are carefully and efficiently maintained. This seminar is the only event to focus specifically on the management of wheelsets and to share best practice in maintaining them cost-effectively.

Learn from a variety of mainline railway, metro and light rail speakers as well as major suppliers about wheelset design and management. Mark Burstow: Principal Vehicle Track Dynamics Engineer, Network Rail

Mark Burstow is a specialist in vehicle/track interaction and vehicle dynamics simulation, and is currently Principal Vehicle Track Dynamics Engineer at Network Rail. He joined AEA Technology Rail in 2001, having worked in academia for a number of years, undertaking research into the rolling contact fatigue problem. In 2006 he joined Network Rail and since then has worked as part of the Vehicle/Track Systems Interface Committee on a wide range of wheel/rail interaction problems, including research into different forms of wheel and rail damage, the P12 wheel profile, optimising vehicle primary suspensions to reduce wheel/rail forces, and vehicle ride and stability problems.

Mark Molyneux: Head of Engineering, Rail Delivery Group

Mark is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and is currently Head of Engineering at Rail Delivery Group. This role includes representing the train operators on industry committees, reviewing relevant standards and legislative proposals and providing train operator input to research projects both in GB and on the European stage. Prior to joining RDG’s predecessor (ATOC) in 2009, Mark has fifteen years’ experience of working for 750V DC train operators. Career highlights include working at Slade Green Depot improving Networker (Classes 465/466) fleet reliability and subsequently using what he had learned to work with the manufacturer to influence the design of the Class 375 Electrostars.

David Barney: Secretary General, Private Wagon Federation

David Barney’s 50 year railway industry career has included senior appointments in traction and rolling stock, business, procurement, assurance and materials management fields. Posts held include Engineering Director for British Rail’s Trainload Freight, Transrail Freight and Parcels Businesses. He is currently the Secretary General of the Private Wagon Federation and is actively involved with safety and interoperability standards and legislative evolution. He played a key role in the establishment and development of the wagon ECM certification regime in Great Britain and advises and assesses major rail industry players. He is a member of several key industry committees.

Alan Lawton: Technical Advisor, Rail Delivery Group

Alan Lawton is a Past-Chair of IMechE’s Railway Division who began his career in British Rail Research working in vehicle dynamics. He moved on to be a project engineer in Paris for Eurostar trains before working in a RoSCo, ultimately as Engineering Services Director. He worked in RSSB and lead team of around 100 that produced RGS until, around 10 years ago, establishing his own consultancy business.

Wayne Jenner: Managing Partner, Danburykline

Wayne Jenner started his career in aviation, holding senior positions in the UK aviation regulator and as well as with British Airways as the Managing Director of their Heavy Maintenance subsidiary BAMC. Wayne moved to rail in 2007 as the Director of Engineering at Southeastern, overseeing the introduction of the UK’s first domestic high speed rail services with the Class 395 fleet. Wayne also managed the provision of rail transport for the 2012 London Olympics, including the high speed Javelin services providing critical transport links between eight of the eleven Olympic venues. Wayne is now a managing partner at Danburykline and has continuing engagements in rail, aviation and Oil & GAS. Wayne also leads the development of SOROS a new fleet management application for rail and aviation.

Adam Bevan: Head of Enterprise, Institute of Railway Research, University of Huddersfield

Adam Bevan has built up a wide range of expertise and knowledge in the field of wheel-rail interface engineering, vehicle dynamics simulation and vehicle-track interaction since starting work in the rail industry in 2004. Adam joined the University of Huddersfield in July 2012 where he is currently Head of Enterprise for the Institute of Railway Research. In his current role Adam has led a number of industry sponsored research and enterprise projects for various clients, such as the Rail Safety and Standards Board, Network Rail and Siemens. These have included the development of new wheel profile designs for the GB rail network and detailed modelling techniques for the evaluation of wear and rolling contact fatigue damage.

Jasper Peen: Senior Consultant - Running Gear, Ricardo Rail Netherlands

Jasper Peen is a skilled technical consultant with extensive experience in the optimisation and improvement of the performance and safety of rolling stock running gear and brake systems. Areas of speciality include all phenomena related to running gear, including noise and vibration, maintenance, fatigue, crack growth and NDT, brake performance and adhesion. In addition, Jasper has wide knowledge of noise regulations, safety philosophies, statistics and maintenance process. He has much experience with procurement, modification and certification of bogies and wheelsets. He has assisted a range of customers with safety analyses, maintenance optimisation, solving fatigue problems to wheel sets and bogies and noise reduction on existing fleets, drawing on his practical knowledge of railway operation and maintenance.
