Overview

This seminar will cover developments in the area of transmission and driveline technology and how this is forecasted to change over the coming years. Clean air policies in Europe and the UK Government pledging to make all new cars and vans effectively emission-free by 2040, have driven manufacturers to re-design drivelines and transmissions in a range of vehicles.

Gain insight into the latest methods to optimise fuel efficiency while maintaining performance and driveability. Understand the impact of electrification and hybridisation on industry as well as improved transmission and drivetrain system integration for heavy duty, off-highway and passenger vehicles. Discover trends in gear ratio selection, the power of real-time data in transmission design and strategies to receive government funding. Mark Ingram: Chief Engineer - Transmission Design, Changan UK

Mark Ingram studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Salford, England.
In 1995 he started at GKN Technology Ltd in the Competitor Products Department. From 1999 he became Programme Manager for “Systems and Mechatronics” in Advanced Engineering In 2000 he joined Ricardo as Principal Engineer in the CAE Department, gaining experience in transmission design and analysis and building an expertise in Manual Transmission Gear Shift Quality. Then in 2004 he was appointed Team Leader for Driveline Attributes, responsible for: GSQA, Shift Quality Development and NVH. In 2005 Mark became Manager for Simulation and Development activities at Ricardo MTC. Then he became Chief Engineer at Ricardo DTS taking on various responsibilities including heading transmission development projects in India and deputizing for the Product Group Head from 2010 onwards. Mark Ingram joined Changan as Chief Engineer for Changan Transmission Design Team and has led the design of Changan’s first “clean sheet” DCT. This transmission is now in production. More recently, since 2016, Mark Ingram has been leading Changan UK’s design activities in Hybridized DCT for Changan’s future hybridized vehicles.

Chris Burbidge: Global Technical Expert - Transmission Software, Ricardo

Chris graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1999 with a Master’s degree in mechanical engineering. He joined Rover Group as an Engineer in powertrain development. Since joining Ricardo in 2002 he has developed his career in the field of driveline and transmissions control systems. He has worked on numerous projects involving AT, AMT, CVT, DCT and EVT transmissions in Commercial, Motorcycle, Off-Highway, Passenger and Supercar vehicles. In 2017 he became Global Technical Expert for Transmission Software. He is excited by current transport challenges and trends such as electrification, connected and autonomous vehicles and ownership models, and the opportunities these provide to influence future drivelines and transmissions.

Adam James: Principal Design Engineer, Xtrac

In 2009 Adam James graduated from the University of Hertfordshire with a Master’s degree in Automotive Engineering with Motorsports. During his time at university Adam complete a placement year at Xtrac Ltd as a Production Engineer and returned to Hertfordshire University as an Xtrac sponsored student. While at university Adam worked as a Junior Race Engineer for Fortec Motorsports for three consecutive seasons in each of which they were team champions. As a Design Engineer at Xtrac Ltd Adam has been highly commended as a Young Designer of the Year finalist at the British Engineering Excellence Awards. As one of Xtrac’s F1 Track Support Engineers he has attended a number of Formula 1 races over a number of seasons. Adam is now Leads the engineering of several Hybrid and EV design concepts.

Steve Nesbitt: Chief Engineer - Programme Management, The Manufacturing Technology Centre

Steve Nesbitt graduated from Kingston in 1988 with an Honours Degree in Manufacturing Engineering. Spent his early career in aerospace at Smiths Industries, before moving in to the automotive industry. He has worked in several tier 1’s and OEM’s, leading the functions for Transmissions and Driveline product development and engineering quality, fuel economy strategy planning and a series of advanced technology projects. He is now a Chief Program Engineer with the Manufacturing Technology Centre, one of the core High Value Manufacturing Catapults, and actively working in projects to bridge the “valley of death” between pure research and series industrialisation, for electrification technologies, in support of a broad spectrum of transport sectors. The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) develops and proves innovative manufacturing processes and technologies in an agile, low risk environment, in partnership with industry, academia and other institutions. We focus on delivering bespoke manufacturing system solutions for our customers.

Jérôme Mortal: Special Vehicle Application Director, Valeo

Jérôme Mortal started his first step of career at Renault in 1984 as a worker and after a complementary studies Jérôme get his next step of career at Peugeot-Citroën Research Centre in 1993 as an Engineer. He then got a Master from French Institute of Petroleum & MIT of Boston and he went to work within Renault Powertrain, Renault-F1 and Renault Sport Technologies. In 2006 Jérôme became Chief Engineer of the Renault-Dacia Powertrain Engineering in Romania. In 2010 Jérôme moved to Russia, becoming the Deputy Director of Mechanical Division at AVTOVAZ before taking a role at Jaguar Land Rover in 2014 as Chief Engineer, Transmission and Driveline and eMachine and Powertrain Systems. In 2018 Jérôme was appointed his new role at Valeo, Powertrain Systems as Special Vehicle Application Director.

Youn Park: VP, Global Head of Aerospace, Romax Technology

Youn Park has worked in the industry for 29 years since he designed the 1st gear at Hyundai Motor Company. He managed a series of gearbox design and development programs until he has pursued a master degree at the University of Nottingham in 2000 with the topic of gear noise and dynamics. He joined Romax Technology in 2001 and soon became a global organisation leader to manage business expansion in USA, EU, Japan, Korea, India & China. Last four years, Youn Park has developed the aerospace business including a strategic account management of world leading aerospace engine manufacturers.

Christopher Thorne: Chief Technology Officer, Heavy Duty Vehicles, Energy Technologies Institute

Chris Thorne is the Chief Technology Officer for Heavy Duty Vehicles at the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI), based in the UK. He has technical responsibility for the ETI’s £40m+ technology development and demonstration programme which is designed to increase heavy duty vehicle (HDV) efficiency by at least 30%. Chris joined the ETI from Caterpillar in November 2010, having worked in a number of positions responsible for engine design, development and integration.

Sean Worrall: Business Development Manager, GKN Innovation Centre

Sean has over 25 years of experience in the automotive industry in the design, development and manufacture of complex systems, leading the change required to adopt new markets and new technologies. For the GKN Innovation Centre, Sean leads the acquisition and development of new business working with government agencies, supply chain, customers and academia to enable the development of cutting edge power electronics and electric motors for future generations of eDrive systems in the UK for a global market. Sean holds a BEng Hons in Manufacturing System Engineering from Brunel University, is a guest lecturer on advanced energy storage systems at Warwick University and is a school governor.

Chris Norton: Design Engineer, Drive System Design

Chris Norton is an engineering Project Manager for Drive System Design. Following his graduation with MEng in Mechanical Engineering from Cardiff University, Chris joined Drive System Design (DSD) as Design Engineer within the mechanical design team in 2014. He then became a Resident Engineer, working on DSD’s behalf onsite at Ford Motor Company, working within Ford’s team to deliver one of the largest transmission programmes in recent years. In his current role as Project Manager, Chris oversees DSD’s involvement in the government-funded ACeDrive programme.

Dave Simner: Course Director for the Military Vehicle Technology MSc, Cranfield Defence and Security, Cranfield University

Dave is the vehicle technology lead on modules for the Military Vehicle Technology and Battlespace Technology MSc courses. He lectures on topics of vehicle design and performance, specifically the areas of driveline, terramechanics and performance prediction and also carries out research and consultancy work in these areas. Dave has previous experience in the automotive industry where he was responsible for the transmission technology development for both off-road and road going vehicles.
