Overview

It is widely accepted that automated technology will play a bigger part in the automobile industry in the future, and that the industry is building towards autonomous vehicles through ever more capable automated and driver assistance features.

According to recent industry research, the shared driverless vehicle market could potentially reach $10.40 billion by 2031. However there are a number of issues to resolve including safety measures and sensor integration before the industry achieves this.

This seminar will provide attendees with an update on the latest technology and developments while helping them understand the opportunities, issues and risks associated with this technology. Take away best practice from thought leaders and engineers in industry that will enable your organisation to develop safe, robust systems.

Michael Steinberg: Head of Strategy, Programme and Communications, Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles

Michael is Head of Strategy, Programme and Communications in the UK Government's Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV). Michael leads on the UK’s international strategy to showcase UK capability as well as coordinating and managing the national strategy for connected and autonomous vehicles. Prior to joining CCAV, Michael was a Strategic Delivery Advisor for the Cabinet Office’s major projects and infrastructure unit where he advised senior responsible owners in successful delivery of their programmers. Michael has a duel Master’s degree from Lancaster University and Ritsumeikan University in International Relations.

Jessica Uguccioni: Lawyer, Law Commission

Jessica Uguccioni is a lawyer at the Law Commission of England and Wales. Jessica has responsibility for leading a three-year review of the UK’s regulatory framework for automated vehicles, including their use as part of public transport networks. At the Commission, she has previously managed the criminal law team, and worked on projects in transport and consumer redress. Before joining the civil service, Jessica was a university lecturer and had been in private practice with Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP in New York and London.

Pawel Jaworski: Senior Research Engineer, HORIBA-MIRA

Dr Pawel Jaworski is the Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAV) Innovation Lead in the Horizon Scanning department of HORIBA MIRA. He is responsible for planning and leading CAV research activities, as well as designing and developing software and simulation platforms to support research in multiple areas. Pawel was awarded a PhD for his research in traffic management systems and the development and implementation of novel Cloud based Traffic Management Systems (CTMS), he has published peer reviewed papers on the subject matter.

Dr Zeyn Saigol: Principal Technologist, Connected Places Catapult

Dr Zeyn Saigol is a Principal Technologist with the Connected Places Catapult, specialising in verification, validation and regulatory approval of autonomous vehicles. He has a BSc in physics from the University of Bristol, master’s degrees from Imperial College and the University of Edinburgh, and a PhD in AI from the University of Birmingham. His research interests covered planning under uncertainty, knowledge representation, mapping, path planning, and machine learning. He has worked with a variety of autonomous systems including wheeled, flying, and marine robots, in roles spanning academia and industry.

Tony Pipe: Deputy Director, Bristol Robotics Laboratory

Prof. Tony Pipe is Deputy Director of Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL). He has 35 years of experience in advanced technology systems integration, gained from working in industry, academia or collaborations of both. His main foci are in ensuring robustness, safety and usefulness of robot devices engaged in safety-critical close-proximity Human-Robot Interaction. Prof. Pipe is deeply involved in a number of Innovate UK funded Connected Autonomous Vehicle projects with a total value exceeding £30M: VENTURER, FLOURISH, MultiCAV, CAPRI, ROBOPILOT and CAV-Forth.

Hayder Wokil: Driver Support Automated Driving Director, Volvo Trucks

Hayder is an engineer holding M.SC degree with more than 20 years’ experience in the international Transport and Trucking industry. He is currently working as Driver Support Automated Driving Director at Volvo Trucks in Gothenburg – Sweden. Prior to Hayder’s current position he was Quality and Uptime Director at Volvo Trucks and member of Volvo Group Quality Committee. He started his career at Volvo Trucks for 20 years ago and was holding different position within the company at product development and product management. In Hayder’s current position he is responsible for Volvo Trucks global strategies and prompting new technology within automated features assisting the drivers, enhancing Active Traffic Safety and making the transport sector more efficient.

Connor Champ: Research Associate, Law Commission

Connor Champ is a research assistant who joined the Commission in April 2018. Before studying law he was a neuroscientist, who held academic positions in both Australia and Germany.

Paul Newman: Co-founder, Oxbotica

Paul Newman FREng, FIET, FIEEE is a creator, pioneer and innovator of autonomous vehicle (AV) technology.

He is Founder & CTO at Oxbotica, BP Professor of Information Engineering at the University of Oxford, and Founder & Director of Oxford Robotics Institute.

His pioneering approach to AV technology is being successfully harnessed for real-world application at Oxbotica - on roads in four continents, down mines, across warehouses and around airports. He makes and leads teams that use bits to move atoms.

In 1999, Paul set out the fundamentals of the large-scale navigation problem SLAM (simultaneous localisation and mapping) which underpins the driverless vehicle revolution. After three years at MIT 2000-2003, working on subsea and land autonomy, he returned to the UK and built the UK’s first AV stack. He continues to lead the way in AV innovation, having authored 200 papers, garnered 16,000 citations and registered 22 patents.

Beyond his responsibilities at Oxbotica and the academic world, Paul is a strategic advisor to businesses and organisations at Government level. He currently serves on the UK Government’s Department for Transport Science Advisory Council and is on the BSI Standards Committee for AV technology. In 2015, he was elected a Fellow of the IEEE, the IET and the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Chris Reeves: Head of CAV, HORIBA MIRA

Chris Reeves is the Head of Connected Autonomous Vehicles Technologies at HORIBA MIRA. His focus is in the field of intelligent and connected vehicles and intelligent mobility. He has extensive experience in sensors, embedded electronics, communications and the verification and validation of CAV related technologies. He is also the programme director at HORIBA MIRA for projects relating to establishing CAV TestBed UK. His is a highly experienced technical manager with a proven record of developing and delivering high technology solutions to the automotive, defence, security and telecommunications sectors, working for HORIBA MIRA Ltd, QinetiQ Ltd and BT Group plc.

Brian Smith: ADAS Technical Specialist, AVL UK ltd

Brian is Technical Specialist for ADAS at AVL UK, working across several OEM customer projects as well as internal and UK Government-funded research activities in the CAV sector. Prior to joining AVL Brian built over 20 years of Automotive Industry experience with JLR, BMW and Ford and has worked with some of the industry’s largest tier 1 suppliers of ADAS and Chassis systems. 5 years ago, Brian moved into the field of Automated Driving, specifically gaining experience in the challenges of delivering SAE Levels 0-2 and also in the move towards higher levels of Driving Automation.

Natasha Merat: Chair in Human Factors of Transport Systems, Fellow of the TRL Academy, Leader, Human Factors and Safety Group, Institute for Transport Studies, University of Leeds

Professor Merat is an experimental psychologist and research group leader of the Human Factors and Safety Group, @ITS Leeds. She also leads the automation theme, at Leeds. She is an internationally recognised expert in studying the human factors implications of highly automated vehicles, and is currently involved in six UK and European Projects on automated vehicles. Professor Merat is co-chair of the TRB sub-committee on Human Factors in Road Vehicle Automation, European representative of the tri-lateral working group (EU-US-Japan) on human factors of automation, advisory board member of Veoneer Inc., and expert member of Zenzic (formerly Meridian
