Overview
Maintenance is a major cost driver. Expenditure on maintenance over the life of the train will match its purchase cost and maintenance requirements also drive train availability. This lecture will explore the opportunities to do things differently when launching a new fleet.
The advances in technology to assist in maintenance, such as the Siemens Railigent system, allows on train information, trackside remote conditioning equipment to be analysed. This is done in a manner which allows maintenance activities to be targeted in the right areas whilst ensuring safety and efficiency is maximised with specialist technicians focused on improving maintenance downtimes and increasing unit performance and availability.
At the heart of this technology is people: the technology allows repetitive and mundane tasks to be removed and provides technicians and engineers access to the right information in easy interpretable format using the latest handheld technology. This enables more informed decision-making which helps to prevent or certainly minimise the effect of failures. New technology allows the digitalisation of depots to maximise capacity and optimise layout of equipment and tools, as well as providing remote visual training and competency of staff.
