Institution of Mechanical Engineers, London
Overview
Frank Ludwig, Director of
Manufacturing at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, will visit IMechE on the evening of 28th
June to give a talk on ‘The Architecture of Luxury’, Rolls-Royce’s proprietary
all-aluminium spaceframe. The Architecture of Luxury sets Rolls-Royce at the
very pinnacle of ‘true’ luxury motor car manufacture as it means that
Rolls-Royce does not share platforms with other brands, unique in the field of
luxury motor cars. Frank will explain the genesis of the Architecture of Luxury
and strategic thinking behind it; the business benefits of this approach to
Rolls-Royce and its supply chain; how the architecture is built and of course
how its inherent flexibility ensures that Rolls-Royce designers and engineers
are free to create the best cars in the world, unencumbered by platform
restrictions.

Frank Ludwig: Director of Manufacturing, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars
Frank
Ludwig has been the Director of Manufacturing of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars since
June2013and has overseen
the transformation of the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood in West Sussex to a
lean single line assembly plant in anticipation of New Phantom in 2017, the
first new Rolls-Royce model based on the new Architecture of Luxury. The second
model based on this new architecture, Cullinan, has now also begun production
whilst older existing Rolls-Royce models based on a monocoque platform are also
accommodated – the true
genius behind this single line approach.
Frank
held various Managerial and Director-level Engineering positions both at
Porsche AG and BMW Group before he joined Rolls-Royce.
Frank
Ludwig is a Mechanical
Engineering graduate of Leibnitz University
in Hannover, Germany and holds a Masters Degree in
