Overview
Scientists forecast that sea levels will be at least one meter higher within 30 years, with many estimates placing this far higher. It is therefore important to plan for how to protect coastal infrastructure and developments which will be at risk of flooding and other associated damage.
This webinar will address how rising sea levels are being measured and monitored, and what engineers can do to mitigate their impact.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
All professionals involved with the following areas will benefit from this webinar:
- Energy Infrastructure
- Planning and Development
- Climate Scientists
- Civil Engineers
- Structural Engineers
- Water Engineers
- Risk Managers
- Flood Defence Engineers
- Property Developers

Francis Mills: Chair, IMechE Construction & Building Services Division
Tim Fox: Chair, IMechE Process Division
Dr Tim Fox is an internationally recognised expert and thought leader in clean energy systems, climate change mitigation and adaptation. He works as an independent consultant operating at the nexus of science-technology-policy-business-communications and has previously been employed in small and large internationally focused commercial enterprises, government agencies and educational institutions in the UK, Australia, Canada and The Netherlands. Tim is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the IMechE, where he is Chair of the Process Industries Division Board and sits on the Technical Strategy Board, Council and the Education and Skills Strategy Board. Dr Fox is also the Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor in Clean Energy and Public Engagement at Exeter University.
John Englander: President, International Sea Level Institute
John Englander is an oceanographer, consultant and leading expert on sea level rise. His broad marine science background coupled with explorations to Greenland and Antarctica allows him to see the big picture of sea level rise and its revolutionary impacts.
He brings the diverse points of view of an industry scientist, entrepreneur and CEO. For over thirty years, he has been a leader in the private and non-profit sectors, serving as CEO for The International SeaKeepers and The Cousteau Society.
John is Founder and President of the International Sea Level Institute, a new non-profit organization focused on explaining the latest science about long-term rising sea level. The institute’s focus is on adaptation to higher ocean levels, but also addresses the connection with various efforts at “sustainability” to slow the warming that may slow the rate of ocean rise. The institute will teach professionals in engineering, architecture, finance, law and planning to prepare for the challenging era ahead including explaining the financial risks of increased flooding advocating for “intelligent adaptation.”
