Overview
It’s safe to say that you probably have a good idea of what you’d like to create when you sit down at your CAD workstation for the day. Constraints will exist around strength, weight, space envelope, etc, and these will influence how to proceed. Your initial design is then validated for those constraints and iterated until a balance has been found. This can be a time consuming and restrictive way of doing things, but there is another way… Generative Design allows the use of modern computer software to create multiple iterations of a design based on the same user-defined criteria. An initial model is created, loads defined, manufacturing constraints added and the software is then left to do the rest.
Generative design is a form-finding process used by designers to optimise the strength-to-weight ratio of parts. It mimics the way natural structures evolve to create the strongest possible structure while minimising material use. With generative design approach, you can create lighter components, minimize manufacturing material waste, and create customisable designs suited for 3D printing.
In this webinar, Ed Hawkins, Technical Manager at Innova Systems, a SOLIDWORKS reseller in the UK, will discuss the generative design process in SOLIDWORKS, go over setting up topology studies and explain the use of generative design in additive manufacturing. The presentation will include a step-by-step demonstration and a live Q&A session at the end. Don’t miss out!

Ed Hawkins: Technical Manager, Innova Systems
Ed Hawkins, Technical Manager and Elite Applications Engineer at UK SOLIDWORKS Reseller, Innova Systems. Ed is responsible for managing the Technical Support team at Innova Systems. Providing pre-sales demonstrations of SOLIDWORKS software, visiting major accounts to perform on-site troubleshooting and installations.
Ed is one of the most experienced and qualified SOLIDWORKS users in the country with an impressive amount of official certifications to his name. In his spare time, Ed is a keen amateur golfer and classic car enthusiast and it’s not unknown to find Ed using SOLIDWORKS for one of his many DIY projects at home.
