Overview
The government’s net-zero commitment is more than a direction of travel. It is a committed target with no clear strategy to deliver it as of yet. UK FIRES’ (Future Industrial Resource Efficient Strategy) ‘Absolute Zero’ report outlines a road map for UK Industry and Policy to meet these ambitious 2050 emissions targets. It advocates utilising incremental change built on existing technology, forgoing the panacea of new or ‘breakthrough’ technologies with little chance of operation at scale in the next 30 years.
What does this mean for manufacturers, both in terms of the products that we produce, and the materials and processes used to produce them? The government’s commitment provides an opportunity for UK manufacturers to take a lead on the global stage in resource efficient manufacturing. Future manufacturing engineers have the potential to be either the heroes or the villains on a pathway to net-zero.
We have a great opportunity to energise the next generation of engineers to seek solutions driven by technology and innovation. These must go hand in hand with behavioural change to meet government targets and deliver a brighter future for our planet. Join this webinar to gain an understanding of the implications for industry and society in light of the UK’s commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 – in particular for the manufacturing sector.

Julian Allwood: Professor of Engineering and the Environment, University of Cambridge
Julian Allwood is Professor of Engineering and the Environment at the University of Cambridge. He worked for 10 years for Alcoa, prior to developing an academic career, initially at Imperial College, and from 2000 in Cambridge. In parallel with developing new manufacturing technologies for metals, he has built up a research group looking at environmental systems and production. From 2009-13 he held an EPSRC Leadership Fellowship, to explore ‘material efficiency’ as a climate mitigation strategy – delivering material services with less new material. This led to publication in 2012 of the book “Sustainable Materials: with both eyes open” which can be read online at www.withbotheyesopen.com, listed by Bill Gates as one of his top six reads of 2015. A revised edition "Sustainable Materials: without the hot air" has now been released.
Sam Turner: Chief Technical Officer, High Value Manufacturing Catapult
Professor Sam Turner is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the High Value Manufacturing (HVM) Catapult. He joined the HVM Catapult team from his role as CTO of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing, where he worked on a range of projects and capabilities including the flagship digital facility Factory 2050, machining, casting and composites technology. As a founding member of the AMRC, Sam developed the AMRC’s Machining Group to its current level of 85 staff and £5M turnover, with successes in delivering impact to UK industry, before moving into the CTO role. In addition to his industrial work, Sam has secured Innovate UK, EPSRC and EU funding for over £20M for manufacturing R&D in machining and automation. He has written over 40 publications, including 16 journal papers in the area of machining. Sam is active in machining, automation and digital manufacturing and chairs the Digital Engineering and Manufacturing Leadership Group.
