Overview
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers warmly invites you to our final prestige event of 2024, the annual Thomas Hawksley Lecture.
This year the Thomas Hawksley is arranged by IMechE Past-President Carolyn Griffiths. Before, during and since her founding and leading the operations of the Rail Accident Investigation Branch, Carolyn has had a keen interest in developing a framework for the design and assurance of engineered and automated systems, taking account of the variability of human performance and the ever increasing capability of automation, machine learning and AI.
Presented by Professor Sarah Sharples of the Department for Transport and University of Nottingham, the lecture will explore how we can improve and assure the safety and operational performance of human-engineering controlled systems, with particular focus on the increase in automation of such systems. It will consider how we can design autonomous or semi-autonomous systems to replicate and exceed competent humans, mitigating the risks posed by humans’ unpredictable nature and the complexity of their environments.
The lecture will be followed by an expert panel discussion responding to Sarah’s presentation and exploring both industry-specific and cross-sectoral implications. This will include time for audience Q&A to allow attendees to interact with the panel.
Following the evening’s technical proceedings, all attendees are invited to a networking reception, to connect with existing friends, forge new connections, and discuss the compelling content presented. Finally, the evening will conclude with a 3-course dinner in the IMechE’s historic library – places for this are limited and available to book via the IMechE Events Team.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?:
This event is open to all and is free to attend. Engineers and professionals involved with or who have an interest in transportation and autonomous systems will find the presentation and discussions of particular relevance.
