Overview
Join the Speak Out for Engineering UK Final 2026, taking place on 5 November 2026 at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow.
The Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE) competition is organised annually by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ local volunteer groups. It was originally established in 1964 to challenge young engineers to prove they could "communicate effectively", which is still an important area in developing engineers today.
The competition provides young engineers with an excellent opportunity to demonstrate and develop their verbal and visual presentation skills and competence in public speaking. Competitors must give an oral presentation on a mechanical engineering-related subject, to be broken down as follows:
The programme will then explore how the engineering and construction sectors can move from climate and energy-transition commitments to practical, investable and deliverable interventions. We will examine how climate adaptation can be integrated with decarbonisation and the energy transition, while balancing performance, affordability, constructability and whole-life value, including contributions on:
- Presentation length: 20 mins
- Discussion and questions from judges: 10 mins
90% of the total marks will be awarded for presentation skills and 10% for technical content.
Participants compete in area heats, which are judged by a panel of professionals and academics chosen by the local committee. The winner and runner-up from each heat will go on to compete in the Regional Final, and the Winner will compete in the UK SOFE Final.
