Overview

IEC 62741 is an international standard which has been published in 2015. This standard provides a description of the principles of the Dependability Case and guidance on its content and application in systems engineering.

This workshop will outline the format and content of the Dependability Case and include presentations from those who have prepared and received such cases in the past.

The Dependability Case can be used throughout the lifecycle, from concept, through development realisation, to utilisation enhancement, and eventual retirement. Learn how to demonstrate compliance with the reliability and maintainability requirements.

Understand how to use the same model to provide assurance of other managed requirements.

GERALD TARANTO (CHAIR): DEPENDABILITY CONSULTANT, TARANTO CONSULTANCY

Gerald Taranto has worked in the safety and reliability field for over 35 years, initially for Rolls Royce on the UK Naval Nuclear programme, safety case development for new facilities at AWE and the development of company implementation of ILS. This work expanded into dependability consultancy to the oil and gas industry in Norway. Gerald became an independent dependability consultant in 2000 working on a number of nuclear decommissioning and offshore oil and gas projects in Norway. Gerald joined BSI committee DS/1 (dependability) in 2002 and became Chairman in 2010. He is also a member of a number of IEC dependability standards committees.

MICK MAGHAR: PROGRAMME MANAGER, INTERNATIONAL SECRETARIATS, BSI GROUP

Mick Maghar is secretary of IEC/TC 56 Dependability. He has worked for BSI for 18 years as a Programme Manager. In 2003 he joined the newly-formed international Secretariats section and since then has acted as secretary for a wide selection of Technical Committees for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Committee (IEC) the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC).

CATHY HUNSLEY: MANAGER, LONDON OVERGROUND

Cathy Hunsley was the project team leader for the development of IEC 62741 within IEC committee TC56 - dependability. She was also the team leader for the BSI project to convert Defence Standard 00-42 into a British Standard. She has represented the Institution on the BSI committee on dependability since 1990 and has represented the UK in the development of other international standards, such as the specification of dependability and dependability management. She is the current Chair of the Institution’s Safety and Reliability Group. Cathy is a chartered mechanical engineer and is currently HSE Senior Manager at Transport for London within London Overground. She was previously a safety and reliability consultant and worked in the defence, air transport and airport safety fields.

RICHARD DENNING: CHIEF DEPENDABILITY ENGINEER IN DEFENCE EQUIPMENT AND SUPPORT, MINISTRY OF DEFENCE

Richard Denning is currently the Chief Dependability Engineer in Defence Equipment and Support, MoD. He is responsible for all reliability policy and manages a team of internal consultants who advise all projects (both new procurement and in-service) on all aspects of reliability. He is also a Defence Equipment and Support Fellow recognising his contribution to the wider reliability field. This role is the culmination of over 20 years working on the reliability of defence equipment and systems. Richard was part of the team that developed and championed the reliability case within defence and has seen the use of the case approach mature since 1999 and then part of the teams which transitioned the approach in to a British Standard and now the current IEC.
