Overview

Lightweight Interiors For Transport brings together Aerospace, Automotive and Railway to discuss cost-effective solutions available to engineers for reducing the weight of interiors whilst meeting customer expectations and safety regulations and standards.

Globally, 23% of greenhouse gas emissions are produced by the transport sector and manufacturers and transport operators are being pressured to reduce emissions and increase efficiency. At the same time, customer demands and safety requirements are continuously adding mass to vehicles and increasing from one development to the next.

Engineers need to find new solutions, materials and components to reduce the weight and help meet CO2 requirements whilst at the same time meeting customer expectations and safety standards without increasing costs.

Lightweight Interiors for Transport will bring together Aero, Auto and Rail engineers to discover innovative materials, engineering techniques and designs to help drive down the weight and meet customer expectations and safety standards across the complete vehicle.

The pre-seminar workshop will start at 13:00 and finish at 17:00.

Aysegul Durak: Cabin Interior Chief Engineer, Turkish Airlines

Aysegul Durak is an aeronautical engineer, graduate of the Istanbul Technical University, and has worked for the Turkish Airlines for over 20 years.

She is specialized in configuring all type of Airbus and Boeing aircraft cabin interiors and is a team leader of purchasing projects totalling more than 200 aircraft. Mrs. Durak is also experienced in all type of aircraft cabin retrofits in addition to creating solutions for in-service problems.

She has designed and managed all the VIP interior projects including Wide-body aircraft, Narrow-body aircraft, Business Jets and helicopters in the name of the Turkish government.

David Irving : Group Chief Engineer – Body, Trim and Lighting, Tata Motors

David Irving is Group Chief Engineer responsible for Body, Closures, Trim, Cockpit, Seating & Lighting engineering at Tata Motors European Technical Centre. He has 23 years automotive experience in Manufacturing and Product Development working for Sommer Allibert, Simula ASD, Lear Corporation, Bentley Motors and for the last ten years Tata Motors at their European Technical Centre in the UK.

He has worked on numerous vehicles ranging from Tata Nano to Bentley Flying Spur, specializing on Interior trim in his early career then leading multi-disciplinary engineering teams in later years.

Chris Tait : Head of Engineering Projects, ScotRail

Chris Tait currently works for Abellio ScotRail as Head of Engineering Projects. His career of over 25 years in the rail industry started with BR Scottish region as an engineering apprentice and he has worked in both public and private sectors of the industry in technical and managerial roles with National Express, Bombardier, First and Abellio.

His current role is responsible for delivering fleet overhaul, refurbishment projects and franchise committed obligations on the Abellio ScotRail diesel & electric fleet as part of a £475M package in Scotland’s railway.

Mark Ellis : Manager – Materials Design and Test, Nissan

Mark Ellis joined Nissan’s European Technical Centre in 1991, initially in the engine design department. Mark then transferred to the materials design department, where he has been involved in the design and development of material applications for Nissan’s European product range.

Following formation of the Renault-Nissan alliance, Mark worked on material synergies and European polymer strategy, with projects focussed on materials for reducing vehicle weight, and material rationalisation / recycling in support of End of Life Vehicle (ELV) issues. Mark has responsibility for all material applications in Europe, from new material development to ELV aspects – a ‘cradle to grave’ responsibility.

Sam Sambasivan : Projects Directorate, London Underground

Sam Sambasivan has over 20 years of experience in the field of material science, and has expertise in plastics & rubber, adhesives and building materials for railway and submarine applications. He is a leading authority in the field of fire safety performance of materials, and has extensive knowledge in the current Fire Safety Legislations, Building Regulations, European and National Standards and test methods for fire and security risk assessments. He is responsible for reviewing and accepting materials and designs and promoting innovations for London Underground Limited.

Ingo Roth : Technology Product Leader Cabin and Cargo Interior and Materials, Airbus

Ingo Roth is the Technology Product Leader Cabin and Cargo Interior and Materials at Airbus R&T department. Ingo has been at Airbus since 2003, starting as Engineering Lead for Currier Area on the A300F-600R.

During his time he has been involved in various interior projects in Europe and North America including Cabin Rapid Decompression Panels, Floor to Floor Specification, Door Frame Lining, Over Head Stowage Compartments, Passenger Service Channels and most recently interiors and materials within cabin and cargo research.

John White : Leasing Aircraft Cabin Project Manager, Air Tanker

Gundolf Kopp : Head of Research Area, Institute of Vehicle Concepts Lightweight and Hybrid Design Methods, German Aerospace Center (DLR)

Gundolf Kopp (Dipl.-Eng.) heads the research department ‘Lightweight and Hybrid Design Methods’ at the Institute of Vehicle Concepts of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). He started to work at the DLR in the year 2004 and was responsible for several research projects, such as the Helmholtz research project ‘Next Generation Car – Vehicle Concepts’ or ‘Novel Vehicle Concepts and Structures’ with topics on new automotive vehicle concepts, multi material design or CFRP lightweight structures as well as various projects carried out directly with the industry.

Conor O’Neill : Rail Vehicles Group Manager, NewRail , Newcastle University

Conor O’Neill is the manager of the Rail Vehicles Group within NewRail and a Senior Research Associate at Newcastle University, UK. His main research interests include lightweight railway materials and crashworthiness analysis.

He has a background in the design, manufacturing and testing of composite materials in the aerospace industry and their potential applications within the rail sector, and holds a patent for a lightweight, self-correcting energy absorbing device for railway applications.

He has participated in and co-ordinated numerous EU research projects including De-Light, SecureMetro, Fire-Resist, REFRESCO, and RAMPART.

Emmanuel Matsika: Research Associate, NewRail Newcastle University

Emmanuel Matsika, a Mechanical Engineer, is a Researcher at NewRail where he conducts research on EU Projects aimed at improving safety and security of passenger railway vehicles, and enhancing performance of railway freight vehicles.

His PhD research was on railway vehicle interior crashworthiness focussing on crash safety of wheelchair occupants.

Caroline Borot: Marketing and Business Development Manager, Industry Solutions, ESI Group

Caroline Borot currently manages Worldwide Business Development and Marketing of industry solutions including virtual seating for ESI Group. Prior to this she worked in the area of sheet metal forming simulation, first in the Technical Support Department as Manager, then as Software Development Project Manager and finally as Product Manager of PamStamp. She studied Material and Mechanical Engineering.
