Aviation Aerodynamics 2016 is co-located with the Brakes 2016 seminar (taking place on 03 November 2016), and the Advanced Engineering Show, the UK’s leading meeting place for engineering professionals with over 12,000 attendees. Overview

With the recent UK government investment into the aerospace industry offering a further £365 million towards technological research and development and creating 2,000 jobs, there is opportunity for significant advances in aerospace technology in the UK. Aerodynamic engineering is at the forefront of these advances, being the primary way of increasing efficiency in flight.

Aviation Aerodynamics 2016 is the only engineering-focused event on the latest developments in both internal and external aerodynamics to reduce fuel usage and increase flight efficiency.

Ivan Popovic: Project Lead – Propulsion Concepts, Rolls-Royce

Ivan Popovic earned B. Eng and M.Sc. in Aerospace Engineering from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada before completing PhD at the Whittle Laboratory at Cambridge University.

Prior to joining Rolls-Royce he worked at the National Research Council of Canada on external aerodynamics and for Fairchild-Dornier in Germany as aircraft performance engineer. In 2010, Ivan joined Rolls-Royce Thermo-Fluids team to work on Trent XWB-97k and future programmes.

He is currently leading Novel Propulsion Concepts in the Future Technologies Group working on distributed power and propulsion.

Konstantinos Kontis: Head of the Aerospace Sciences Division, University of Glasgow

Konstantinos Kontis is a world-leading authority in aerodynamics, wind tunnel testing, flow control, shock physics and diagnostics. He is the Mechan Chair of Engineering and the Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Glasgow.

As Head of the Aerospace Sciences Division, he is providing leadership and is in charge of strategy, decision-making, development of initiatives and collaborations, and line-management of members of staff.

He is representing the University of Glasgow in a number of committees and working groups worldwide, where he is contributing to the Aeronautics and Space Strategy. He leads and coordinates the University of Glasgow 'National Wind Tunnel and Testing Facilities / ESA-ESTEC Facility' Centre.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (FRAeS), the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (FIMechE), and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (FAIAA). In May 2016, he was elected Director-at-Large of the AIAA Board of Directors, USA.

John Bolger: Engineering Associate Fellow – Compressor Aerodynamics, Rolls-Royce

John Bolger is a senior engineering specialist in turbomachinery aerodynamics with over 25 years of experience in technical and leadership roles within Rolls-Royce. He gained his PhD in 3D Compressor Aerodynamic Design from the University of Cambridge, Whittle Laboratory in 1999 and has led aerothermal teams in fans, compressors and turbines to deliver global product development programmes.

He is a Rolls-Royce Engineering Associate Fellow in Compressor Aerodynamics and currently has the role of global specialist in fan and compressor aerodynamics technology.

José Longo: Head Aerothermodynamics and Propulsion Analysis Section, European Space Agency

José Longo received his degree in aeronautical engineering in 1978 and his Doctor degree in 1993. He has worked from 1979 till 1992, in the aeronautic field at the Military Factory in Argentina, Dornier Aircraft Germany, MBB Germany and finally at the German Aerospace Center, DLR.

Since 1993 he is working in space programs, at DLR till 2009, and since 2010 as Head of Aerothermodynamics and Propulsion Analysis at the European Space Agency.

Dr. Longo received in 1978 the University Best Score Award; in 1995 the DLR Research Award; in 1999 the NASA X-38 Project Award and in 2002 the NASA Group Achievement Award.

Malcolm Pembery: Test Engineer, 5m Wind Tunnel, QinetiQ Ltd

Malcolm Pembery started at Rolls Royce in Derby in the Technical Design department working on bearing loads, internal air flow and deriving performance data at various conditions. This would be used by component design specialists.

This led to the Engine Test Facility at Pyestock where he was a part of a team collecting data from EJ200 and WR21 tests and maintaining the performance calculation programs.

Following the shutdown of Pyestock he transferred to the 5m Wind Tunnel at Farnborough, where an interest in electric powered aero-modelling led to the ambition to utilise electric motors in aero-engine simulators in tunnel models

Peter Curtis: Chief Technical Officer, Aircraft Research Association

Peter Curtis has been Chief Technical Officer at ARA for 7 years, responsible for developing the overall aerodynamics capability of the company, both experimental and computational. He previously spent 25 years at BAE Systems, specialising mostly in propulsion related aerodynamics. His work included research on future concepts and time spent on the Harrier, Nimrod MRA4 and JSF programmes.

Michael van Rooij: R&D Engineer Computational Aerodynamics, Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR)

Michel van Rooij is an R&D Engineer with NLR in the Department of Flight Physics and Loads. He obtained a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering from Syracuse University with research on three-dimensional multistage inverse design applied to aerodynamic matching of axial compressor blading.

Before joining NLR, he worked at Siemens Power Generation as a development engineer for axial compressors. He has been involved in research and development of rotating systems continuously for over 15 years.

His current research interests include unsteady aerodynamics and aeroelasticity of turbomachinery and aircraft, more electric aircraft and engine concepts.

James Barth: Lead Aerodynamicist, Reaction Engines

Prior to joining Reaction Engines, James has worked on fluid dynamics problems ranging from micro-scale multiphase flows through large-scale industrial processes. He studied operational mode transition inside a rocket-based combined cycle engine at JAXA during an MSc in Space Sciences from International Space University.

He then completed a PhD in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Queensland, focused on fuel injection and combustion efficiency improvements in a Mach 12 scramjet.

As part of REL’s Performance and Aerodynamics team, and in collaboration with industrial partners, he works on modelling and testing the aerodynamics of the SABRE engine and its subsystems.

Tim Galsworthy: Head of Wing of the Future, Airbus

Tim Galsworthy is the Head of Wing of the Future where he is responsible for the integration and delivery of technologies and architectures that enable future Airbus products to retain their world leading position.

He has worked for Airbus for 38 years and has a background in manufacturing and engineering. He joined the company in 1978 as an apprentice Aircraft Fitter working on projects like VC10 Tanker conversion, F1-11 refurbishment and BAE146 assembly. After 11 years in manufacturing he worked as a structures design engineer on multiple Airbus programmes until leading his first team for the Nimrod MRA4 engine installation.

He went on to become the design integrator for A380 leading edge, then Wing Chief Designer on A400M. When A350 XWB was launched he led the technology development programme for Airbus’ first majority composite civil wing and empennage. When that was completed, Tim became the Head of Engineering on the A350-900 wing.

After nine years working on A350, seeing the programme from first ideas through to in-service, he joined the R&T community in January 2016 as Head of Wing of the Future.

Tim is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.
