Platform Train Interfaces is the only event focused on the engineering solutions to mitigate risk around the PTI.

Overview

With the number of passenger incidents at the platform train interface having increased by 400% since 2003 according to TfL, Platform Train Interfaces 2016 will bring together the rail community to address and solve current problems.

Attendees will hear about operational solutions being implemented by key players across the existing rail network as well as the integration of PTI strategy into plans for new rail developments. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear the latest new engineering innovations to risk around the PTI such as gap-filler technology.

Organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, this is the only event focused on the engineering solutions to mitigate risk around the PTI. Make sure you attend to hear about how to address both current systems and new developments are being addressed, and take away insights into the new technologies being implemented to increase passenger safety without hindering the overall capacity of the rail network.

Running alongside Platform Train Interfaces 2016 will be a half day workshop “Door Optimisation” as well as an exclusive visit to PAMELA, a research platform at the heart of the UCL Transport Institute. Both events take place on 06 December and can be purchased as part of your seminar attendance package.

Taku Fujiyama: Senior Lecturer, Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, University College London

Taku Fujiyama is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering of University College London. After working as a civil engineer in charge of station construction at East Japan Railway for five years, Fujiyama has been researching passenger/pedestrian movements and behaviour in railway and street environments at UCL. His research “Designing platform humps for London Underground” has been awarded the James Hill Prize of Institute of Civil Engineers this year.

Sebastian Seriani: Civil Engineer, Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, University College London

Sebastian Seriani is a Civil Engineer with a Master in Urban Project, currently a second year PhD student at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering of University College London. From 2012 to 2014, he was a lecturer at Universidad de los Andes (Chile), where he participated in teaching sessions and different research projects related to transport. As part of his PhD he is working with from Rail & Underground Transport Planning at Transport for London (TfL), in some research on PTI, platform behaviour and impact on boarding and alighting time.

Bridget Eickhoff: Principal Infrastructure Engineer, RSSB

Bridget Eickhoff has worked in a range of railway engineering posts, most related to the wheel-rail or vehicle-track interface. This has included both theoretical and experimental work on ride quality and passenger comfort, on derailment risk, vehicle approval testing, track geometry and track deterioration. Throughout her career, she has been able to apply engineering knowledge and know-how to practical railway problems and issues in the UK and internationally, as part of consultancy and research work. Bridget is now Principal Infrastructure Engineer for RSSB with responsibility for GB Railway Group Standards related to the interfaces between infrastructure and trains.

Phil Hinde: Rolling Stock and Depots Manager, Crossrail

Phil Hinde joined British Rail in 1972 before studying at Cambridge University. After an early career with electrification and plant he moved into trains as manager of Selhurst depot; then project managing introduction of the Electrostar fleet on the commuter routes from London to Kent and Sussex. He is now technical lead for rolling stock at Crossrail.
Phil has served on several European committees framing ENs and TSIs and has represented UK on industry groups developing environmental, energy management and safety standards.

Prof Andrew McNaughton FREng: Chief Engineer and Technical Director, High Speed Two (HS2)

Prof Andrew McNaughton FREng, since 2009, has been Chief Engineer and Technical Director of High Speed Two Ltd, developing the principles, network and specific route design for high speed rail in Great Britain. Prior to that, from 2001 he was Chief Engineer of Network Rail responsible for the specification and development of the GB rail network, investment authorisation and overall system safety management. His career in the rail sector spans 40 years. He is Honorary Professor of Rail Engineering at Nottingham University and a Visiting Professor of Engineering at both Imperial College London and Southampton University. Andrew is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Royal Geographical Society and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. Andrew has been Vice Chair of the EU Transport Advisory Group, Chair of the UIC Infrastructure Commission and Chair of the EU Rail Research Council. He has lectured on the transport, land use and economic planning effects of regional, freight and long distance rail developments world-wide. Andrew chairs the World Intercity and High Speed Committee.

Frazer Scott: TLP Systems Safety Manager, Govia Thameslink

Frazer Scott is the Thameslink Programme (TLP) Systems Safety Manager for GTR, within the TLP Project Team, leading on the safety approvals and verification under the company’s SMS for the new Class 700 train and any associated infrastructure. Over the past 5 years he has ensured that the new Class 700 was safely introduced into passenger service on the Thameslink route through the company’s safety validation process, including the requirement for risk evaluation and assessment against the Common Safety Method, as well as numerous platform extensions, access-for-all station improvements and significant layout changes at key London stations
