Overview

This seminar will offer a unique opportunity to hear about how thought leaders in the automotive industry are adapting to comply with changing legislation.

With guidance from the Department for Transport and insight from industry specialists in emissions testing, this seminar will highlight the unique challenges in remaining compliant with changing regulation.

Core issues to be addressed include the technical challenges facing engineers in meeting emissions targets, and the role that emissions testing procedure plays in this. Issues surrounding the standardisation of equipment and procedure as well as best practice in developing reports from the data shall also be addressed.

Paul Markwick: Managing Director of Operations, Manufacturing Technology Centre

Paul Markwick is the Managing Director of Operations for the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC), part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult. The MTC helps to generate rapid and sustainable growth to the UK economy by delivering integrated manufacturing systems solutions.
Prior to joining the MTC, Paul was the Chief Executive at the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA), an Executive Agency of the UK Department for Transport (DfT). VCA is the UK Type Approval Authority for new on and off-road vehicles, responsible for certifying that these have been designed and constructed to meet internationally agreed standards. Paul is a Fellow of The Institute of Mechanical Engineers, a Chartered Engineer and has an extensive industry background, including roles at Jaguar, Pirelli, Land Rover and Ricardo.

Mark Peckham: Director, Cambustion

Mark Peckham graduated from University of Edinburgh in 1990 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and went on to complete a PhD at Cambridge University in 1993 on the subject of in-cylinder [HC] sampling with a fast FID.

After a brief time at Ricardo, he joined Cambustion where he has been a director since 1997. He is mostly involved in technical support and sales of the fast response gas analyzers and DPF testing systems. He also publishes technical papers involving the application of this equipment to combustion and emissions control systems.

Simon Williams: Senior Principal Calibration Engineer, MAHLE Powertrain

Simon Williams graduated from Loughborough university in 2006 where he studied Automotive engineering. He joined MAHLE Powertrain later that year and is now a key member of the Thermodynamic and Application department in the role of Principal Calibration Engineer. Simon currently leads the Real Driving Emissions team at MAHLE Powertrain and is responsible for a number of related projects.

Nick Molden: Founder and CEO, Emissions Analytics

Nick Molden founded Emissions Analytics in 2011 in order to understand real-world fuel economy and emissions from vehicles. The concept was to find a way to characterise vehicles in a relatively short test, and be able to conduct a large number of comparable tests. The solution was to use Portable Emissions Measurement Systems to source real on-road raw data efficiently across many vehicles. This database is now a platform for analysing and modelling this data. From this, the EQUA Air Quality Index in Europe and Real MPG in the USA is created, as well as extensive testing of heavy and light duty commercial vehicles. Nick is a specialist in data analytics, particularly in the automotive market, through his prior work at Oxford Indices Ltd, a data specialist, United Business plc and Haymarket Media Group.

Finn Coyle: Principal Technical Specialist - Transport Emissions, Transport for London

Finn Coyle is an Automotive Engineer with a background in diesel engine performance and emissions development. Finn presently works for the TfL Buses Directorate as Research and Development Manager where he is responsible for promoting, developing and implementing environmental policies and strategies for the bus fleet.

Marcus Davies: Emissions and Core Calibration Manager, Ford Motors

I studied Mechanical Engineering and UMIST followed by a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nottingham working for Prof Paul Shayler. The subject area of my PhD was fuel utilisation during the cold start of a gasoline engine. I joined Ford Motor Company in 1999 working in the Research and Advanced group working initially on powertrain system models and then on advanced gasoline aftertreatment systems and lean burn gasoline engines. Since 2007 I have worked in the powertrain calibration group holding various positions including Emissions Calibration Technical Specialist for gasoline powertrains and as a vehicle calibration supervisor responsible for the 1.0L Ecoboost engine calibration in the Focus applications. I currently hold the position of Powertrain Calibration Manager responsible for core feature calibration development including emissions and driveability for gasoline and Diesel powertrains.

Professor Chris Brace: Professor of Automotive Propulsion and Deputy Director, Vehicle Research Centre

Chris Brace is Professor of Automotive Propulsion and Deputy Director of the Powertrain Vehicle Research Centre. He is the immediate past Chair of the Automobile Division of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) (2012 to 2014) and is member of the Technical Committee of FISITA and Members Council of LowCVP. He has published over 110 conference and journal papers with over 50 industrial co-authors and attracted over £10million for collaborative research funded by EPSRC, DTi, TSB/Innovate UK, APC and directly from industry

Chris began his career as a student apprentice at Massey Ferguson Tractors in Coventry and studied for a thin sandwich degree at the University of Bath, graduating in 1990. Following a short spell designing powershift transmissions at Massey Ferguson, Chris returned to the University in 1992 to conduct research on an integrated Diesel CVT powertrain in a DTi co-funded collaboration with Ford, Johnson Matthey and Lucas Diesel Systems. Chris developed AI based engine models of transient fuel consumption and emissions and a simple optimisation technique using gradient descent with momentum to form a model based integrated powertrain control architecture. After the award of his PhD in 1996 Chris remained at the University working on collaborative research projects before becoming a Lecturer in 2000 and progressing to Professor in February 2014.

Chris leads a wide portfolio of powertrain systems based research projects including Diesel and SI engine systems, advanced transmission systems and HEV, BEV and REEV concepts. The research has a common theme around the intensive measurement of the thermodynamic and mechanical processes leading to greater insight into system behaviour under dynamic operating conditions. All of the research is in collaboration with industry, most notably Ford Motor Company and Jaguar Land Rover.
