Alexandra Simmonds: Metallurgist, RINA Consulting

Alexandra Simmonds has over six years’ technical experience with the materials and lifetime degradation issues associated with pipework and welds on industrial plant, predominantly in the power sector. Since joining RINA Consulting in 2014, Alex has performed a variety of metallurgical investigations including several analyses of boiler tubes. She also performs remaining life assessments of HRSGs and steam pipework systems based on interpretation of operational data and inspection results in the context of design and potential damage mechanisms.

Bob Anderson: Consultant, Competitive Power Resources Corporation

Bob Anderson is Principal of Competitive Power Resources Corporation. Bob has a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering and has worked in power generation for 43 years. Bob was employed for 33 years at Florida Power Corporation/Progress Energy and held a range of positions. As Manager of PE’s Combined Cycle Services Section he was involved in the procurement, design, operation and maintenance of PE’s fleet of combined cycle plants. Bob has participated in the installation of thousands of tube temperature thermocouples in a variety of HRSGs and assessed operating data for many HRSGs worldwide to identify and mitigate damaging thermal transients.

Mario Farrugia: Senior Lecturer, Mechanical Engineering Department, University of Malta

Mario Farrugia graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Malta. He then worked with Enemalta mostly at Delimara Power Station until 2000.

During 1995/6, Ing. Farrugia followed a masters degree in Mechatronics.

In 2000 Ing. Farrugia joined the University of Malta Mechanical Engineering Department. In the following year he took an assistantship at Oakland University and started reading for PhD.

Ing. Farrugia has been active in Formula SAE since 2001. At the University of Malta, he was academic adviser for FSAE team that designed and built the first University of Malta vehicle.

Detlef Simon: Head of Marketing and Sales, Standardkessel Baumgarte GmbH

Detlef Simon started his professional career with Vereinigte Kesselwerke AG as an engineer in the project and sales department in 1978. 1990 he moved to Noell-KRC where he was responsible for the sales for waste to energy plants with a focus on firing and steam generation. In early 2000, he changed to Seeghers (today Keppel-Seeghers) where he was in charge of sales for waste to energy plants in Germany. Since 2003 he works for Standardkessel Baumgarte GmbH (formerly Standardkessel GmbH) as head of marketing and sales.

Stephen Kendrick: Director Service and Sales, Spiralweld

Steve is an experienced power industry technician, commissioning engineer and manager having worked in the industry for almost 40 years, his expertise and knowledge cover steam and gas turbines, nuclear reactor systems, boilers and balance of plant. Steve is the Service and Sales at Director at Spiral Weld Limited. SpiralWeld™ have been solving problems for the UK power industry for 28 years providing remanufacturing and upgrade services on a wide variety of critical components and systems.

Jake Waterhouse: UK Director, Dekomte De Temple Kompensator-Technik (UK) Ltd.

Jake Waterhouse trained with Allen Gears (within Rolls-Royce Industrial Power Group) and completed a Bachelors of Engineering (BEng Hons) degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Birmingham City University. In Allen Gears, he worked as a sales, applications and project engineer for main drive parallel shaft and epicyclic gearboxes. In 2004 he joined DEKOMTE operations in the UK, and is now responsible for managing and developing the UK expansion joint business. Since 2011 he has been on the corporate board of DEKOMTE with responsibility for all international business. As a chartered engineer, Jake uses technical ability to deliver specialised solutions tailored to the customers' requirements.

Colin R. Brett: Inspection Management, Technical Head, Uniper UK Ltd.

Chris Ward: Lead Inspection Management Engineer (Compliance), RWE Generation Ltd.

Dr Chris Ward has worked in the power generation industry for 16 years, specialising in the plant integrity field, predominantly in NDE but also in mechanical engineering and metallurgy. Whilst working in the industry, he gained a doctorate in NDE through the RCNDE EngD Centre in 2010. He has worked on phased array of small bore butt welds since 2009, both in validating the technique and carrying out inspections.

Mark Taylor: Principal Engineer, Tetra Engineering (Europe)

Mark Taylor (MEng, Mechanical Engineering, University of Salford, United Kingdom) first worked as an aerospace engineer on jet engine thrust reversers. He joined Tetra Engineering (Europe) in 1997 where he is now a Principal Engineer in the European office. Over the years he’s been involved in most areas relating to the mechanical integrity and performance of the HRSG and associated balance-of-plant. He has published several articles and technical papers on HRSG O&M issues.

Jean-François Galopin: Director of Technology VP, CMI Energy

In 1988, Mr Jean-François Galopin graduated as professional Engineer in Electromechanics from the University of Brussels in Belgium. He also holds an MSc in Aerospace Vehicle Design from Cranfield Institute of Technology.

He gained his experience on boiler design and project management  within CMI Energy, whilst successively occupying engineering responsibilities in R&D, Calculation, Proposal, as Technical Project Manager, before being Design Office Manager during the last 12 years. He is currently Chief Technology Officer of the Energy sector.

Mr Galopin is the author of several papers and international publications on both Horizontal and Vertical HRSG technologies and HRSG cycling related issues.

Steve Mould: Chief Engineer in Power Generation, WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff

In 1980, Stephen graduated from the University of Salford with a BSc Hons in Environmental Chemical Engineering and joined a two year EITB approved graduate engineer training scheme with NEI International Combustion. He has subsequently gained over 35 years of power engineering experience on projects with a mixture of contactors and consultants. His work has incorporated many different forms of conventional and fluidised bed boilers and HRSG technologies. He has experience in the combustion of many fuels including bituminous and brown coal, natural and refinery gases, Heavy Fuel Oil, and various types of biomass. His current position is Chief Engineer with WSP.

Imran Naqvi: Corrosion Engineer, Lake Corrosion Engineering

Imran Naqvi is a Corrosion Engineer and Business Manager at Lake Corrosion Engineering. His work focuses on asset protection and mitigating Dew Point corrosion using VpCI technology. Imran is responsible for HRSG and ACC preservation using Cortec’s VpCI technology.

Prior to this role, Imran led research projects within the oil and gas sector in the North Sea specialising in marine riser fairings and corrosion control for offshore structures.

Imran earned a B.Eng. (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Glasgow and a MSc in Subsea Engineering from the University of Strathclyde.

Barry Dooley: Senior Associate, Structural Integrity Associates, Inc.

Stuart Simpson: Technical Head, Boiler Engineering, Uniper Technologies

Stuart has been Technical Head for Boiler Engineering at Uniper Technologies since 2007, having worked in the power industry since 1986 in a variety of roles focussed on boiler pressure parts, pipework, steel structures and auxiliaries. As well as supporting operational plant, he has been involved in new build and tracking new technologies. This role has included work within the UK and abroad for internal and external customers. Stuart is an member of the IMechE, sits on the IMechE Thermal Power Committee and chairs the IMechE Conventional Power Boiler User Group. He has a mechanical engineering degree from Manchester University.

Simon Fenton: Technical Head, Pressure Systems Compliance, Uniper Technologies

Stephen Kimpton: Mechanical Engineer, Centrica

Following his degree in Sustainable Engineering Stephen Kimpton joined Centrica Energy’s Power Division. He gained extensive experience on outages and operations of 4 stations in the fleet, covering a range of HRSGs both horizontal and vertical gas path units. During this time he’s had to deal with many different service related reliability and life limiting issues. Stephen has also presented at previous HRSG users groups in the UK and Europe, and is involved in research programmes on Grade 91 service capability and cold weld repairs.

Steve Brett: Consultant, Steve Brett Consultancy Limited

Steve is an independent consultant in materials and welding and an honorary professor at Nottingham University. He has been active in the UK power industry for 38 years, mainly involved with the inspection, failure investigation, and repair of high temperature headers, steam chests, and pipework. He has particular experience with the structural integrity issues associated with grade 91 systems, specializing in conventional and small scale creep testing and also weld repair without post weld heat treatment.

Joe Rosagro: Mechanical Design Engineer, Spirax-Sarco

Joe is a mechanical design engineer with 10 years’ experience within R&D team at Spirax-Sarco. Having developed various mechanical steam controls products, Joe is now responsible for developing repeatable systems for energy recovery applications.
Within his current role, Joe’s work includes creating steam system designs, controls logic specifications and technical project proposals.
Joe’s work has been applied to various energy recovery applications, from wafer baking, to ceramics manufacturing, to milk powder spray drying. All of these applications having Heat Pipes as the primary heat transfer technology.
