Bob Anderson: Consultant, Competitive Power Resources Corporation

Bob Anderson is Principal of Competitive Power Resources Corporation in Palmetto, Florida. CPR is an independent consulting firm specializing in HRSGs and their related steam-plant auxiliaries in the combined cycle/cogeneration industry. Bob received a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of South Florida. He has worked in power generation for 47 years. Before joining CPR in 2005, Bob was employed for 33 years at Florida Power Corporation/Progress Energy, now Duke Energy. During his career there Mr. Anderson held a range of positions including Boiler Engineer, Steam Turbine Engineer, Plant Manager, and Director of Gas Turbine Major Maintenance. As Manager of PE’s Combined Cycle Services Section he was involved in the procurement, design, operation and maintenance of PE’s fleet of combined cycle plants. Bob has participated in the installation of thousands of tube temperature thermocouples in a variety of HRSGs and assessed operating data for many HRSGs world wide to identify and mitigate damaging thermal transients. He has authored, and co-authored, a number of technical papers and published articles on the findings generated by this work. Mr. Anderson is Chairman of the HRSG Forum and chairs HRSG and Combined Cycle plant seminars and conferences for various groups worldwide and serves on the Editorial Board of the quarterly publication Combined Cycle Journal.

Matthew Surry: Energy Trader, SSE plc

Matthew Surry is Energy Trader at SSE, with over 7 years’ experience working in the industry. Matthew has a Master of Science (MSc) Degree in Energy Policy from the University of Exeter, graduating in 2012. He started working as a Shift Energy Trader dispatching SSE’s thermal and renewables assets as part of the 24/7 team in 2013. He now sits in the Prompt Trading Team trading across a range of timeframes from Day-Ahead to Winter - 23.

Having spent the last 10 years working for Siemens in their industrial small gas turbine division in Lincoln, Jon moved to Uniper in 2019 to help them initiate a business in District Heating using their experience of designing, building and operating networks across Europe for over 60 years. Alexander Duncan: Integrity Engineer, Uniper Technologies

Alex Duncan is a consultant integrity engineer at Uniper Technologies Ltd., with over 5 years’ experience in the Electricity Transmission, Gas Transmission and Electricity Generation industries. Alex has a Master of Engineering (MEng) degree from the University of Bristol, graduating in 2011. He has worked on several aspects of power station boiler and HRSG integrity management and operational support, including pipework stress analysis, pressure part design, site inspection, and analysis of flexible operation.

Ryan Broughton: Principal Engineer, WSP

Ryan Broughton is a Principal Engineer with WSP with experience of the development, engineering and project management of energy and power projects in the UK and overseas. He has used his practical approach and analytical skills to aid in the development, construction and due diligence of major projects. His experience covers CCGT power plant, steam systems, reciprocating engines, carbon capture technology and industrial process technology. Alongside his technical skills, Ryan has project management, risk management and leadership skills and has used these to successfully manage diverse teams on a range of projects. Ryan is skilled at process and thermal modelling and has extensive knowledge of energy markets and the planning, technical and regulatory changes that will affect those markets over the next decade.

Jack Abbott: Regulatory Manager, Wholesale Electricity Markets, Centrica

Jack leads on the regulatory support to Centrica Business Solutions, ensuring that the business is aware of key regulatory risks and opportunities for the different technologies Centrica Business Solutions operates. In a rapidly changing energy system, a key part of Jack’s role is to engage with key external stakeholders such as Government, regulators and the electricity system operator on policy and regulatory changes. Prior to joining Centrica, Jack worked at EDF Energy in a number of policy and commercial roles, focussing on EDF’s generation fleet, namely; coal, CCGT, nuclear and wind.

Jake Waterhouse: Sales & Technical Director, Dekomte

Jake Waterhouse trained with Allen Gears (within Rolls-Royce Industrial Power Group) and completed a Bachelors of Engineering (BEng Hons) degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Birmingham City University. In Allen Gears, he worked as a sales, applications and project engineer for main drive parallel shaft and epicyclic gearboxes. In 2004 he joined DEKOMTE operations in the UK, and is now responsible for managing and developing the UK expansion joint business. Since 2011, has been on the corporate board of DEKOMTE with responsibility for all international business. As a chartered engineer, Jake uses technical ability to deliver specialised solutions tailored to the customers' requirements.

Karel van Wijk: CEO, Advanced Valve Solutions USA Inc.

Karel Van Wijk founded AVS over 25 years ago. His knowledge and experience that he gained in boiler design and manufacturer, in his early career, stood him in an excellent position to develop a business within the valve industry. His drive to deliver the most technically advanced, reliable and efficient solution is what has made AVS the company it is today, a now 30 strong dedicated team. Karel Van Wijk takes a very active and hands on role within the business, being heavily involved in everything from quoting to delivering presents, covering all aspects of valve design and process solutions.

Lorenzo Giusti: Thermal Process Engineer, Siemens

Lorenzo was born and raised in Pisa (Italy). After high school he enrolled at the faculty of engineering in Pisa where he studied Energy Engineering. In 2010 Lorenzo moved to the Netherland, in Arnhem, to complete his master thesis about co-firing of biomass in coal power plant and worked as an intern in former KEMA. After graduation Lorenzo joined Siemens HTT (formerly known as NEM Energy) and started working as thermal and hydraulic engineer. During his career he participated into several product developments. Nowadays his main activities are focused on advancing the HRSG technology to meet the ever changing market demands.

Peter van Manen: Service Development Consultant, Frazer-Nash Consultancy

Peter has a service development role at Frazer-Nash. He is a focal point and technical lead for a number of digital initiatives relating to the development, deployment and operation of assets and infrastructure in the energy, transport and industrial sectors. These combine science, measurement and mathematics to enable better and timely decisions and interventions, with less uncertainty and risk. He has worked in a variety of high impact industries, including over 20 years at the highest levels of professional motor sport. He was Managing Director of McLaren Electronic Systems until 2015, supplying control and data systems to all competitors in Formula One, IndyCar and NASCAR. He was head of engineering at Living PlanIT AG until 2018, developing software, sensors and Artificial Intelligence for real estate and infrastructure.

Simon Dawes: Head of the Capacity Market, Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy

Simon is responsible for the GB Capacity Market (CM), a key feature of the Electricity Market Reform programme. The CM provides regular, secure payments to generators and other providers of firm capacity who win agreements in a series of annual auctions. The first auctions took place win 2014, with the next planned for early 2019. His previous roles within the Civil Service have included a focus on fossil fuel generation and coal mining, including the phase out of unabated coal generation and the closure of the remaining deep coal mines; leading on policies to increase levels of recycling, particularly plastic packaging; and on cutting water pollution from agriculture.

Lee Warren: Head of Thermal Power, Drax Power

Lee Warren started in Electrical Supply Industry as a craft apprentice before completing Electrical/Mechanical BEng(Hons) and MBA, He has managed and operated a range of plants including Gas Storage, CHP, WDF processing, Coal Generation and CCGTs. He has been involved in full project life cycle including Development, Construction, Business Set up, Operation, Divestment, Closure, and Demolition. This includes the closure and demolition of a 2400MW Coal Fire Power Station. He is currently the Head of Thermal for Drax Generation. He has business responsibility for 4 CCGTs and 1 Waste Derived Fuel Processing Plant. He is enthusiastic about the develop of Engineering, have recently joined a University Engineering School advisory board.

Jordan Gillies: Mechanical Engineer HRSG & BoP, RWE Generation UK PLC

Jordan is currently employed by RWE Generation UK as a Mechanical Engineer within Staythorpe Power Station’s HRSG and Balance of Plant team. He has worked for RWE since his graduation in 2015 where he has been involved in a number of projects across several of the company’s UK based sites. During Great Yarmouth Power Station’s 2018 station upgrade, Jordan was part of a larger project team that oversaw the planning, design and implementation two significant HRSG upgrades aimed at improving the system’s integrity and reliability.

Katherine Asvegren: Plant Integrity Engineer, Drax Power PLC

Katherine Asvegren is a Plant Integrity Engineer for Drax Power with over nine years’ experience in the power industry, having gained an MEng degree in Aero-Mechanical Engineering from the University of Strathclyde. Katherine is a member of the Generator’s Safety and Integrity Program (GENSIP) Pressure Systems Working Group, the Engineering Equipment and Materials User Association (EEMUA) committees for User Inspectorates and Pressure Vessels/Piping and is a contributor to EEMUA’s Mechanical Integrity Practitioner Course. Katherine has responsibility for management of third-party inspections for several thermal plants in the UK, writing statutory inspection scopes and producing long term asset management strategies for HRSG systems

Simon Farrey: Power Key Market Driver – EMEA, MISTRAS Group

Simon Farrey currently is the European Power Key Market Driver at MISTRAS, with specialized knowledge of the local and international markets within the oil & gas and power generation industries. He has over 20 years of experience in the power industry, working in team leadership roles as well as engineering on control systems for aeroderivative and heavy industrial turbines. He has valuable experience in Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants and has a strong understanding of the issues and challenges faced by HRSG operators.

Michael Anderson: General Manager, KRR ProStream

Michael is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with a broad range of HRSG experience. He found himself Station Manager at Slough Heat and Power where the operated various 5 different boilers and turbine systems including a frame 5 gas turbine and HRSG. He then moved to the UAE to advise banks on Independent Power and Water projects, where his projects included:

• Construction monitoring on Az Zour North a 1.5MW CCGT with 5x GE 9f units, Nooter Ericson HRSGs

• Operations monitoring of PP11 a 1.8GW CCGT plant (4x GE 7FA )

• Shweihat 3 a 1.6GW CCGT (4x SGT5-4000F GTs)

• A new coal plant development on the Mongolian Steppe.

Upon his return to the UK in 2018 he join KRR-Prostream, and that brings us to today.

Walter Peters: Lead Development & Project Manager, VPI Immingham Plant

Stephen Lloyd: CEO, Spindeep Limited

Stephen has 40+ years’ experience in the oil and power industries, specialising in combustion equipment. Completing his apprenticeship with Davy-Powergas, he joined Foster-Wheeler (now Wood Group) as a thermal designer, before moving onto Bechtel after 10 years. Following ten years with Bechtel, he formed his own company, working on pipelines, platforms, GOSPs, LNG plants, FPSO, with flares, heaters, WHRU, HRSG, and packages. With degrees from Oxford University (M.A.) and Birmingham University (M.Sc.), Stephen is a Fellow of the Energy Institute and Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Author of many papers, he won the Gummer Award (Energy Institute) and Bechtel Technical Excellence Award.

Manfred Jansen: European Operations, Anodamine Europe BV

Manfred Jansen has over 25 years of experience with the application of film forming technology to protect the water steam cycle of utility and industrial steam boiler systems from corrosion during operation and lay-up. Because of the limitations of film forming amines in high pressure and high temperature conditions to meet OEM limits for steam purity, he was developing an improved chemical structure to meet the OEM limits. Parallel in the USA there was a similar development and in 2015 both parties joined forces to mitigate corrosion in water-steam cycles.

Moore Holmes: Technical Specialist, British Engineering Services

Moore currently works in the boiler and pressure vessel discipline at British Engineering Services, a leading provider of statutory inspection and conformity services within the UK and Ireland. He has been involved in the safety inspection industry for over 13 years, having previously worked in the pressure equipment sector in various technical roles for 20 years. Moore is a chartered engineer and Fellow of the IMechE and SOE/Bureau of Engineer Surveyors.

Paul Grady: Mechanical Engineer, Health and Safety Executive

Paul is currently responsible for mechanical engineering technical input to HSE policy on Machinery Safety and Pressure Systems. He represents HSE on British, European and International Standards on these subjects, including work on defining benchmarks for isolation and safe intervention with machinery. Previously Paul managed a team of mechanical engineers, providing support to HSE Inspectors in the Midlands, South of England and Wales. The scope included providing technical direction and advice to incident investigations to a diverse range of general manufacturing, construction and fairground applications. Paul has a particular interest hydraulic and steam pressure systems. He was the main author of the latest revision of HSE guidance GS4 (Safety in Pressure Testing) and PM73 (Safety requirements for Autoclaves). He worked closely on these topics with the British Fluid Power Association and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.

Gareth Davey: Quality Manager, Hartford Steam Boiler UK

Gareth Davey has been with Hartford Steam Boiler (HSB) for over 5 years and is the Quality Manager for the Notified Body section of HSB. HSB is an active Notified Body for the Pressure Equipment Directive and has certified over 200 HRSG assemblies since the introduction of the PED. Gareth is active as Nuclear Inspector and Lead Auditor for PED and EN codes, including inspection of fabrication shops and site assemblies. He brings a wealth of experience from compliance, on-site inspection, project management and final certification perspectives for all types of pressure equipment.

Kieran Farr: Energy Trader, SSE

Kieran Farr is an energy trader at SSE currently focused on short term power with five years experience dispatching combined cycle gas turbines in the UK market. Prior to his career in trading he served in the Royal New Zealand Navy for seven years as a marine engineering officer. He has a BE(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Auckland.
