Overview

Abellio Greater Anglia awarded a contract to Stadler for the delivery of 58 multiple unit trains for the Greater Anglia Franchise.

After a brief introduction of both companies and the project, the presentation will focus on the innovative aspects brought to the UK with the FLIRT units, a multiple unit train type well-known in continental Europe. These feature low floor access at stations with a retractable step, articulated bogie design, bi-modal operation under a 25kV catenary and diesel power. The second part of the session will cover the main challenges encountered so far in complying with UK train design standards and preparing for UK rail network compatibility and authorisation assessments.

Martino Celeghini: Senior Technical Project Manager, Stadler Bussnang AG

Martino Celeghini has been a Senior Technical Project Manager at Stadler Bussnang AG since 2010. He is responsible for the FLIRT UK projects and is currently leading the technical team for the contract awarded in October 2016 by Abellio Greater Anglia and Rock Rail for the delivery of 58 FLIRT units to East Anglia. Before the contract he has been involved in the tender phase in the definition of the FLIRT product for the UK market. His previous involvement within Stadler has been focused on the FLIRT for wide gauge Russian infrastructure and on the delivery of 38 FLIRT units for Estonia in 2013. Before joining Stadler, he led the technical team at Siemens in Germany for the design of the low floor tram platform Avenio and was involved in the refit program for the Combino low floor trams. He had a PhD education in Germany on Manufacturing Technology and a degree in Mechanical Engineering in Italy.

Steven Mitchell: Joint Project Manager, Greater Anglia and Rock Rail

Steven Mitchell is the Joint Project Manager for Greater Anglia and Rock Rail. He is responsible for the successful delivery of the new Stadler trains for use in the Greater Anglia region, on behalf of the operator and owner. Prior to this he has held roles in Greater Anglia, as the Engineering Director, Head of Engineering and Fleet Manager for the Norwich Fleets therefore learning about the region, its current trains, operations and the environment the new trains will be working in. Prior to this he worked for ALSTOM as the Engineering Manager for their “Metrotrains” division, helping to introduce the 95TS.
