Artur Putsiata: Head of Department (Locomotives), Belarusian State University of Transport (BSUT)

I was born in 1978 in Belarus. I graduated Belarusian State University of Transport (BSUT) as an engineer in a rolling stock in 2000. I have degree of Candidate of technical sciences and title of my dissertation is “Estimation of stress-strain condition of railway tank car taking into account relative movement liquid in the tank”. I have degree of Doctor of Engineering and title of my dissertation is “The cars’ construction development methodology taking into account force interaction with transported cargoes”. I work at BSUT now and I am the Head of Department (Locomotives).

Illia Arkhutsik: Post-Graduate Student , Belarusian State University of Transport (BSUT)

I was born in 1990 in Belarus. I graduated Belarusian State University of Transport (BSUT) as an engineer in a rolling stock in 2013. I have degree of Master of technical sciences and title of my dissertation is “Definition of residual resource of a bearing structure of the railway tank car after long-term service”. I’m a Post-Graduate Student at BSUT now.

Dr Babakalli Alkali: Assistant Head of Department in Mechanical Engineering, Glasgow Caledonian University

Dr Babakalli Alkali is a Reader in Maintenance Engineering and currently the Assistant Head of Department in Mechanical Engineering at Glasgow Caledonian University. He is leading the Maintenance and Reliability Engineering group at GCU. Babakalli is currently leading a research project in excess of 0.2 million pounds on maintenance optimisation of railway rolling stock in Scotland. His specific research interests are in: Railway Asset Management, Project Management, Road Transport Research, Maintenance Optimisation, Failure Analysis, Reliability and Maintenance Modelling, Stochastic processes, Risks and Availability Assessment, Condition Based Maintenance, Statistical Process Control, Maintenance Audit of Complex Systems. Babakalli has published over 100 scholarly papers in international journals.

Chris Baker: Professor of Environmental Fluid Mechanics, Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education, University of Birmingham

Chris Baker is Professor of Environmental Fluid Mechanics in the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education at the University of Birmingham with wide ranging research interests in the fields of wind engineering, wind/crop interaction, road and rail aerodynamics, pollution dispersion and transport resilience in adverse weather. He is currently PI for grants of the order of £2.5million from UK research council, EU and rail industry sources. He was an undergraduate, postgraduate and Fellow at St Catharine’s College Cambridge, and has worked in the past for British Rail Research and Nottingham University.

David Buckley: Head of Engineering Solutions, Balfour Beatty

David Buckley is a chartered engineer with over 16 years rail engineering experience. Leading a team of engineers in Balfour Beatty Rail he is an industry expert in the field of Gauging with several publications and conference papers. Recent work has included research for RSSB producing gauges for the new suite of gauging standards and pioneering the Balfour Beatty online gauging system bbrailportal.com.

David Hynd: Head of TRL’s Biomechanics and Injury Prevention Team, TRL

David is Head of TRL’s Biomechanics and Injury Prevention team. Over fifteen years at TRL (the Transport Research Laboratory), he has led on injury mechanisms and human injury tolerance. David has developed crash test dummies as human surrogates, and devised road and rail vehicle crash test procedures and rating schemes.
He chaired a working group for the European Enhanced Vehicle-safety Committee (developing test tools, injury criteria and test procedures for European and United Nations road safety regulations); and is currently the UK representative on WG12 (Biomechanics).
In 2015, David received the US Department of Transportation Award for Safety Engineering Excellence.

Dominic Johnson: Programme Engineer – Systems, Network Rail

Dominic Johnson is a Chartered Engineer employed by Network Rail to deliver work for the Thameslink Programme within the Systems Engineering Team. He has seven years’ experience spanning Oil and Gas, Aerospace and Defence and Railway industries working with Advantica, Atkins, Rolls-Royce, Crossrail and Network Rail. He has knowledge in conducting stress analysis, 3D modelling, life cycle cost, mechanical design and requirements management. His current role is to assess the interface between programme and project level verification and validation of the Thameslink Programme. He is actively involved with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers as an Industry Liaison Officer and mentors three developing engineers.

Robert Holbrow: Senior Project Engineer, Network Rail

Robert Holbrow is a Chartered Engineer employed by Network Rail as a Senior Project Engineer. He is responsible for the design and construction assurance of the new track layout at London Bridge on the Thameslink Programme, a scheme involving approximately 150 new sets of points and ~40km of plain line renewals. He has seven years of experience in the railway industry in a range of track engineering roles. He is an IMechE mentor, mentoring for graduate engineers on the Network Rail graduate training scheme.

Gregor Malzacher: Research Associate, German Aerospace Centre (DLR), Stuttgart (Germany)

Gregor Malzacher studies in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Technology (TU) Dresden (Germany), specialising in rail vehicle technology. Since 2015 research associate at the German Aerospace Center’s (DLR) Institute for Vehicle Concepts in Stuttgart (Germany), research field of vehicle architectures and lightweight concepts. Project staff of DLR’s Next Generation Train (NGT) project. Main research focus in the methodical development of lightweight optimised mechanical architectures for the structures of railway vehicles.

Han Zhaoling: PhD Degree Student in Traction Power State Key Laboratory (TPL), Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU)

Han Zhaoling, 26 years old, is currently a PhD degree student in Traction Power State Key Laboratory (TPL), Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU) at Chengdu, Sichuan Province of China. He received his BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Mao Yisheng Honor School of SWJTU in 2014, and then start his Master degree study in TPL. In 2016, he was elected as a PhD student, majoring in Vehicle Operation Engineering, and his research interests include vehicle-track coupled dynamics, train-track-bridge dynamic interaction and structure control.

Inara Watson: PhD Research Student, London South Bank University

Born in Latvia and graduated with a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from Riga Technical
University. Almost 20 years’ experience with the railway industry in Latvia and mostly in the operation sector. Gained an MSc from London South Bank University in Transport Engineering and Planning, currently studying for a PhD at London South Bank University.
The topic of PhD research is; “Sustainability and Related Factors of High Speed Rail”. Contributed several publications online and in journals relating to sustainability of transport.

John C Morris BEng (Hons) MBA CEng FIMechE CMILT: Director, Rail Systems, WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff Ltd

John Morris is a Postgraduate Researcher at Newcastle University, and also Director, Rail Systems for WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff Ltd.
John has extensive experience in rail infrastructure engineering, particularly 25 kV AC electrification, including catenary systems design and development, major construction projects, and route-wide operations and maintenance, as well as leading international standardisation projects.
John is involved in numerous UK and European rail committees, including Cenelec SC9XC (Railway Electrotechnical Applications: Fixed Installations), and chairmanship of British Standards committee GEL/9/3. John was first convenor of group drafting BS EN 50119 ‘Overhead Contact Lines’, an important standard supporting European Interoperability.
John is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the IMechE.

Julian Ross CEng FIMechE FRSA FRGS: Head of Development, IP Great Western & Crossrail

Julian started his transport career as a graduate trainee with London Underground, working as a rolling stock engineer, before moving to a planning role supporting congestion relief schemes and early concepts for Crossrail and Thameslink. Subsequently he worked on the East London line upgrade project, and developed modularisation concepts for station infrastructure.

After joining Network Rail, Julian undertook project management, sponsorship and commercial roles within the Crossrail Programme, before leading a new team developing Network Rail's long term plans for the Western route. Currently Julian leads Network Rail’s Future Projects Group, which develops proposals for major enhancements on the Western Route.

Karl King: Principal System Engineer, WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff

Karl has worked within the railway industry for his entire professional life, starting as an Electronic Design Engineer before moving into Systems Engineering. He now specialises in the development and delivery of complex systems of systems and has worked on the requirements management and configuration control of many major projects including the Cambrian ERTMS Early Deployment Scheme, Victoria Line Upgrade, Thameslink, Crossrail and HS2 as well as numerous international projects including the Edmonton Light Railway System, Tel Aviv Red Line, Brisbane ERTMS Upgrade and several mining railways throughout Africa. His experience covering ERTMS, CBTC and PTC systems.

Maria Gallou: EngD Research Engineer, LB Foster Rail Technologies

I graduated from the Civil Engineering School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2012 with specialization in transportation engineering. I obtained a MSc in “Engineering Project Management” before joining the Loughborough University Engineering Doctorate research programme related to track structure requirements for a long-term improved performance. Through this, I’ve sought to enhance industry’s understanding about the deformation performance of railway track structure to allow improvements of specific products or specification of them. Further to my studies, I have been involved in projects with LB Foster including numerical modelling and track forms deformation measurements supporting Network Rail projects.

Maria Sarmiento-Carnevali: Research Associate, Loughborough University

Maria Sarmiento-Carnevali has recently joined the Control Systems Research Group at Loughborough University, UK, as a Research Associate. She is a Systems Engineer specialized in simulation and control, with experience in electrochemical and electromechanical systems of different nature. Currently finishing PhD studies, her interest is now focused on railway industry research.

Matteo Vagnoli: Research Fellow, University of Nottingham

Matteo Vagnoli is a PhD student funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie scheme at the University of Nottingham. He gained a BSc in Energy Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, Italy (2011). After graduating with honours in his MSc in Nuclear Engineering (2014), he worked as a research fellow and teaching assistant within the Laboratory of Signal and Risk Analysis in Milan. His work is centred on developing innovative methods of post-processing and on-line data analysis methods, computational methods for dynamic reliability analysis of critical systems, as well as methods for system health monitoring and fault diagnosis.

Monish Sengupta: Principal Consultant - Signalling, Ricardo Rail

Monish Sengupta is a physicist and Chartered Engineer by profession with a special interest in CBTC / ERTMS signalling. He is a Principal consultant with Ricardo Rail and has completed his research degree with the Centre of Transport Studies, University College of London. He has pursued his career along three broad themes within the field of railway signalling:
• Automatic train control system for a CBTC railway,
• Main line signalling implementing high speed railway, and
• Legacy signalling design around UK main line and London underground signalling principles.
The system level thinking while understanding the methodologies for design and modelling, are of special interest to him. He is a member of Institute of Physics and IRSE.

Naim Kuka: Railway Dynamics and Mechatronics Network Leader, Alstom Transport

Naim Kuka is Railway Dynamics and Mechatronics Network Leader at Alstom Transport, Master Expert in Railway Dynamics, member of the CEN/TC256/WG10 and UNIFE TG Railway Dynamics. Before joining Alstom in 1993, he obtained a PhD at University of Tirana and a postdoctoral specialization at the Politecnico di Torino and FIAT Research Center in Turin.

Panayioti Yianni: System Modeller and Data Analyst, Amey

Panayioti is an innovative and adaptable system modeller and data analyst. His PhD was carried out in Infrastructure Asset Management, in close collaboration with Network Rail. He has expertise in Whole Life Cycle Cost modelling focusing on those with Monte Carlo simulations. He developed a railway bridge model which able to predict the future condition of bridge assets, when maintenance would be required, the type of maintenance and the associated cost. His work within Amey Strategic Consulting and Technology allows him to continue working on state-of-the-art analysis and modelling with a variety of different clients.

Paul Molyneux-Berry: Principal Research Fellow, Institute of Railway Research, University of Huddersfield

Paul Molyneux-Berry is a chartered mechanical engineer with 18 years experience in the rail industry. He has worked for Bombardier, AEA Technology and the ‘Rail Technology Unit’ before his present role of Principal Research Fellow at the University of Huddersfield ‘Institute of Railway Research’.
Paul specialises in vehicle dynamics, wheel/rail interaction, wheel and track damage, and safety assurance. He spends most of his time on a variety of research and consultancy projects for London Underground.

Sonja Nightingale: Senior Pedestrian Modeller, Mott MacDonald

Sonja Nightingale is a Chartered Engineer, Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and of the Institution of Engineering and Technology. She has over 9 years’ experience in pedestrian studies and leads the Mott MacDonald Pedestrian Modelling and Visualisation Team within the Transportation Unit in the UK. She has worked on major design projects, such as Crossrail, Melbourne Metro and Doha Metro, and is the project manager responsible for the development, sales and marketing of the Mott MacDonald in-house pedestrian modelling software STEPS and train-platform interface software ALIGHT.

Stephanie Coates: Project Manager and Chartered Engineer, Fishbone Solutions

Stephanie Coates is an electrical and electronic engineer and is registered as a Chartered Engineer with the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET). She has successfully delivered a number of rolling stock modification programmes in roles ranging from design through to project management. She has also led contract negotiation and has developed multi-disciplinary teams to deliver complex railway projects. She is experienced in multiple rail environments including rolling stock, light rail, signalling and infrastructure.

Nick Wray: Director, Peak Statistics

Nick Wray has a BSc in Geology with Chemistry from the University of Exeter, PGCE in Science and Mathematics Education from the University of Keele, Graduate Certificate in Statistics from the University of Sheffield, MSc Statistics from University of Nottingham. Worked in mathematics and science education field for many years, lastly as mathematics co-ordinator for special needs education, dealing with young offenders and school refusers. Statistical work includes analysis of medical prescription patterns, and data analysis for the rail industry.

Dr Stephen Lewis: Research Associate, University of Sheffield

Stephen gained his first degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Hertfordshire 2007. He then joined the University of Sheffield and studied for a PhD in Tribology of the Wheel/Rail Contact graduating in 2011. Stephen has since worked as a Post Doctorial Researcher at the University of Sheffield since graduation and has worked on projects ranging from the development of railway lubricant approval standards, development of creep curves to support an on board low adhesion detection technology and the investigation of optimum set-up for on-board sanding systems. Stephen is currently investigating the use of laser cladding technology to reduce wear and rolling contact fatigue.

Stuart Hill: Research Assistant, Brunel University London (BUL)

Stuart Hill completed his MEng in Mechanical Engineering at Brunel University London (BUL) and graduated with 1st Class honours July 2016. He gained professional experience in the building controls industry for placement but developed an interest in robotics and automation. After being appointed as the primary full time researcher on the project and it was his job to carry out the work and develop the feasibility deliverables and reports; consisting of HTA, design specification, concept generation and feasibility assessment.

Yu Sun: PhD Student of Traction Power State Key Laboratory (TPL, Southwest Jiaotong University

Yu Sun, 27 years old, a PhD Student of Traction Power State Key Laboratory (TPL), Southwest Jiaotong University, which located at Chengdu, Sichuan Province of China. His major is Vehicle Engineering, his supervisor is Professor Wanming Zhai. His current research interests include vehicle-track coupled dynamics, wheel-rail mechanics, rail wear simulation and rolling contact fatigue.

Professor Keith Pullen: Professor of Energy Systems, City, University of London

Professor Pullen’s PhD (1990) is from Imperial College London, on small high speed turbines and generators with Rolls-Royce. As Energy Systems Professor at City, University of London, he manages research staff, PhDs and laboratory facilities for high speed machines. Keith has authored over 100 papers and has 27 patents granted or pending.

Neil Cooney: Technical Director, Stored Energy Technology Ltd

Neil Cooney is the Technical Director of Stored Energy Technology Ltd (SET), experienced in Product Development of control, electro-mechanical and mechatronic systems gained at LandRover, BMW and CAT; further developed in collaborative joint ventures with industry partners. His Bachelor’s Degree is from Birmingham and Master’s from Warwick; Neil is CEng, MIET.

Rebeka Sellick MEng CEng FIMechE FIET: Head of Rail, TRL

From mending trains to asset management and whole system performance and optimisation, Rebeka’s 30 years of railway engineering span frontline maintenance, strategic leadership (as Engineering Director ATOC) and R&D. Now Head of Rail at TRL, Rebeka offers consultancy to enable better transport for all.

David Hynd: Head of Biomechanics and Injury Prevention, TRL

David Hynd BEng, PhD, CEng, FIMechE is Head of TRL’s Biomechanics and Injury Prevention team. Over fifteen years at TRL (the Transport Research Laboratory), he has led on injury mechanisms and human injury tolerance. David has developed crash test dummies as human surrogates, and devised road and rail vehicle crash test procedures and rating schemes. He chaired a working group for the European Enhanced Vehicle-safety Committee (developing test tools, injury criteria and test procedures for European and United Nations road safety regulations); and is currently the UK representative on WG12 (Biomechanics). In 2015, David received the US Department of Transportation Award for Safety Engineering Excellence.

Dr Howard J. Parkinson BSc MSc PhD CEng FIMechE MIRSE PGCE: Director, Digital Rail Limited

Howard obtained his PhD in engineering from Manchester University and has over 25 years railway experience working in at least 20 countries worldwide in various senior positions. He is currently involved in product development, consultancy, training and research. He has recently published papers on the use of Natural Language Processing to analysis accident data, Big Data Analytics and machine learning in rail, vision systems, and autonomous anomaly detection. Digital Rail Ltd is embedded in the Data Science Institute at Lancaster University and is seeking to develop game changing ways of undertaking railway systems engineering and asset management. They have recently patented autonomous vision systems for monitoring platform safety.

Fateme Dinmohammadi: PhD researcher in Mechanical Engineering, Glasgow Caledonian University

Ms. F. Dinmohammadi is a researcher in the field of "Maintenance and Reliability Engineering" at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Glasgow Caledonian University, UK. She has been working since 2014 on a research project funded by Scotrail about development of a risk based maintenance modelling tool for railway critical assets. Her research interests lie in the development of new methods for "Assessing & Improving Reliability", "Risk Mitigation", "Life cycle Cost Management", "Failure mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis", "Maintenance Management", "Applied Optimisation" and “Decision Support Systems". She has published several papers in reputable journals and conference proceedings.

Dr Mahmood Shafiee: Lecturer, Engineering Risk Analysis, Cranfield University

Dr Mahmood Shafiee is an internationally recognised thought-leader in “Engineering Asset Management” discipline with more than fifteen years of experience of research in “Risk, Reliability and Maintenance Engineering” within the Energy and Railway Transport industry sectors. Presently, he is a Lecturer in Engineering Risk Analysis at Cranfield University, UK. He has authored over 70 publications in top-ranking journals and in major conference proceedings. Dr Shafiee has successfully managed several national and international research projects on reliable and intelligent maintenance of rail infrastructure and rolling stock assets. He has been plenary speaker and programme committee member of over twenty international conferences across the world. He sits as committee chair on the European Safety and Reliability Association (ESRA) and committee member on the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). He serves as Associated Editor and member of Editorial Board in International Journals.
