Mark Shannon: Head of Project Management Office and UKAEA Strategic Plan Development, UK Atomic Energy Authority

Mark Shannon is Head of Project Management Office and UKAEA Strategic Plan Development at UKAEA, as well as the chair of the Nuclear Power Committee at the Institution. Mark joined the multinational EU team in Garching, Germany as head of Design Integration and Systems Engineering in the development of the conceptual design of the DEMO reactor which will follow ITER in demonstrating the commercial feasibility of fusion power. After an assignment of one year in Garching, he has now returned to the UK to become head of the Project Management Office at UKAEA and co-ordinate the development of the strategic plan for the organisation.

Tim Chittenden: Immediate Past President, Nuclear Institute

Tim Chittenden joined the Royal Navy in 1971 whilst reading Engineering Science at Cambridge. He specialised in Marine and Nuclear Engineering and joined the nuclear submarine service where he served as a Marine Engineering officer afloat and ashore. After 34 years during which he gained promotion to Rear Admiral he retired from the Royal Navy to take up appointments initially as Programme Director and then as Safety and Assurance Director at BAE Systems’ nuclear shipyard at Barrow-in-Furness; he retired for a second time in 2011 but retains associate status with the company. He was appointed as a non-executive director of Sellafield Ltd 2008 and as Vice President of the NI in 2012, succeeding to the Presidency in Oct 2013.

Geraint Williams: ONR Principal Inspector – Nuclear Safety, Office for Nuclear Regulation

Geraint Williams has been with ONR (or its predecessor, NII) since 2001. Before becoming a nuclear regulator, he worked firstly for a reactor power station design/construction company, then for a reactor operating company, before working for some years in consultancy - which included non-nuclear clients as well as nuclear ones. He has a long term involvement in both hazards and safety cases, both in ONR and in previous employments.

Jim Reed: Design Authority Group Head, EDF Energy

Dr Jim Reed works for EDF Energy and has been head of the ‘ AGR Graphite Programme’ for the last 10 years. Jim has developed his graphite expertise by working in the field of the UK Magnox and AGR reactors for over 35 years. In addition Jim is a senior Safety Case Officer, so not only does he lead the technical programme to gather the safety case evidence, he shapes the safety case and manages it through the necessary internal and external stakeholder agreements. Jim is regularly involved in the international community, including the IAEA, on the behaviour in the 12 operating RBMK reactors in Russia and the Next generation Of reactors with graphite cores (e.g. Pebble Bed, HTR etc).

Sally Forbes: Co-chair of the Safety Case Forum and Principal Safety Assessment Specialist, AWE

Sally Forbes has worked in the field of nuclear safety for 20 years. She is currently a Principal Safety Assessment Specialist at AWE, where she is responsible for managing the safety case process and procedures. Projects have included use of Safety Culture HAZOPs to assess potential management failures in the safety case process, and design of Safety Case on a Page. She is currently Co-Chair of the Safety Case Forum, facilitating the development of good practice guides across the participating licensee companies and related organisations. Sally has a PhD in nuclear physics and is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics.

Colin Micklethwaite: Senior Safety Consultant, National Nuclear Laboratories

Colin Micklethwaite is a Senior Safety Consultant with the Safety Engineering and Assessment team in the National Nuclear Laboratory based on the Sellafield Site. He has over 30 years in the nuclear industry; most of these have been in the field of nuclear safety in one way or another. Colin’s background is in Physics and Mechanical engineering. He began his career working for Rolls-Royce and then for Vulcan. After joining BNFL in 1990 as a Safety Assessor he has worked on nuclear safety cases for Sellafield, Capenhurst, Springfields and Windscale sites; spending most of his time keeping the lights on in ageing facilities where there is limited opportunity for engineered protection.

David Forsythe: Nuclear Decommissioning, _

David Forsythe is currently leading a programme to develop a risk based approach in high hazard decommissioning work. He has aviation experience but the majority of his career has been in nuclear, with 25 years holding management positions in operations, operations support, projects and safety cases on and in support of the decommissioning of legacy nuclear facilities operated in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s. The majority of his time has been spent developing pragmatic approaches to difficult safety cases in high hazard facilities culminating in the current focus on people and governance.

Andrew Macdonald: Architect Engineer, Plant Engineering, Central Technical Organisation, EDF-Energy Generation

Andrew Macdonald is the Architect Engineer for the Dry Fuel Store Project at Sizewell B Nuclear Power Station. Andrew is a Chartered Chemical Engineer and started his professional career in 2002 in the Food and Drink Industry where he led a number of Process R&D and Plant Installation Projects. After joining British Energy (now EDF Energy) in 2010, Andrew started working on the Dry Fuel Store Project in 2013 as the Junior Architect Engineer before taking on the lead role for the project in 2015. Andrews experiences in the delivery of gated projects in highly regulated industries has taken him naturally into the Architect Engineering role at EDF Energy.

The Honourable Sir Charles Haddon-Cave: _, _

The Honourable Sir Charles Haddon-Cave has been active in numerous major disaster investigations, including the Manchester Air Disaster, Herald of Free Enterprise, Braer Disaster, Kegworth Aircrash, Knight Aircrash BP Trent and the Marchioness Disaster. He also led the inquiry into the 2006 RAF Nimrod Aircrash, and described the safety case carried out between 2001 and 2005 as ‘a lamentable job from start to finish’. The Honourable Sir Charles Haddon-Cave was appointed a Justice of the High Court and assigned to Queen’s Bench Division in 2011, and appointed Presiding Judge on the Midland Circuit in 2014.

Mike Peers: Regulatory Liaison Manager, URENCO UK Limited

Mike Peers is the Regulatory Liaison Manager for URENCO UK Limited at Capenhurst in Cheshire. He has over 20 years’ experience working in the field of nuclear safety in respect of both facility and transport safety cases and this has included management of independent peer review. He is chair of the URENCO UK Limited nuclear safety committee having previously been a long standing member on various safety committees within the company. Mike’s background is in Physics. He began his career by joining BNFL in 1994 as a nuclear safety assessor where he worked on safety cases for Sellafield and Springfields.

Stephen Brinsden: Company Safety Manager, National Nuclear Laboratories

Stephen Brinsden is the Company Safety Manager at the National Nuclear Laboratory based on the Sellafield Site. Steve has worked in the nuclear industry for more than 20 years; this has included roles in research and development, MOX fuel manufacture, safety case management and safety case improvements.

Mark Wilkes: Lead Safety Engineer, Amec Foster Wheeler

Mark Wilkes has worked on a range of tasks, varying in complexity, subject and clients throughout his career. This has ranged from Safety Case development work to Periodic Safety Reviews (PSR) for EDF Energy. In recent years he was lead for the delivery of a PSR for Cernavoda Unit 1 NPP in Romania. This was followed by a Technical Integration Lead within Rolls-Royce, which involved modifications to modernise a facility, a PSR and an update to a facility Safety Case. Since then he has contributed to various projects including the assessment of Internal Combined Hazards.

Daniel Cooper: Senior Safety Consultant, Clean Energy, Amec Foster Wheeler

Daniel Cooper is a senior safety case consultant for Amec Foster Wheeler with 10 years’ experience in the nuclear industry. Daniel has provided safety case and licencing guidance to various nuclear projects in all stages of the life cycle. He has provided safety case guidance and assessment for Capenhurst, Sellafield and Devonport. He was part of the licencing team at NNB GenCo which gained successfully a nuclear site licence for Hinkley Point C and provided general safety case advice and assessment for Hitachi-GE in Generic Design Assessment for the UK ABWR at Wylfa focussing in Internal Hazards.

Matt Wightman: Senior Safety Consultant, Amec Foster Wheeler

Matt Wightman is a Senior Nuclear Safety Consultant at Amec Foster Wheeler. He has over 10 years’ experience working within the nuclear defence, decommissioning and new build sectors. Matt is currently working for Dounreay supporting a project aiming to deliver a new suite of gloveboxes into an existing facility. Before this, Matt was involved in the Generic Design Assessment of the AP1000 reactor, and the closeout of Assessment Findings specifically in the area of Internal Hazards.
