Human Factors in Transport: Keeping Transport Safe, Efficient and Cost-Effective

Andrew McNaughton: Technical Director, HS2 Ltd

Andrew McNaughton has been Chief Engineer and Technical Director of High Speed Two Ltd since 2009, developing the principles, network and specific route design for high speed rail in Great Britain.  

Prior to that, from 2001 he was Chief Engineer of Network Rail responsible for the specification and development of the GB rail network, investment authorisation and overall system safety management.

His career in the rail sector spans 40 years. Andrew is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Royal Geographical Society and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. He has been Vice Chair of the EU Transport Advisory Group, Chair of the UIC Infrastructure Commission and Chair of the EU Rail Research Council.

John Mount: Technical Specialist in Human Factors, Rolls-Royce Submarines

John Mount is a Technical Specialist in Human Factors for Rolls-Royce Submarines in Derby.  John has extensive experience in providing Human Factors input into the design justification and safety and reliability assessment of submarine reactor plant.  

John began his career as a Mechanical Engineer, and has since specialised in Human Factors, providing both Human Reliability Assessment into Probabilistic Safety Assessment, and providing Human Factors input into plant design.  

Currently, John is chair of Working Group 4, Human Factors, for the IMechE Safety and Reliability Group.

Lee Skrypchuk: Human Machine Interface Technical Specialist, Research & Technology, Jaguar Land Rover

Lee Skrypchuk became a Human Machine Interface Technical Specialist in 2011, where he focuses on researching future interface technologies for us on Jaguar Land Rover products. This covers all technical aspects of interface technologies such as engineering, human factors and psychological aspects.

He has since been technical lead on projects such as Head up Display, Driver Monitoring, Gesture, 3D displays and is responsible for future technology research roadmaps in this subject area.

Lee completed a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Computing at Nottingham Trent University, followed by a Master degree in Display Technology, Systems and Applications at Dundee University.  

Stuart Smith: Senior Ergonomist, Network Rail

Stuart Smith has been working in the Human Factors/Ergonomics field for over 19 years. He is a Senior Ergonomics Specialist in the Network Rail Ergonomics team, where he has worked for the past seven years.

Stuart’s core work at National Rail (NR) currently includes incident investigation, human reliability in systems, Human Factors/Ergonomics in Track Worker Safety, design and evaluation of infrastructure for installation and maintenance, and assessing new and existing products for use on NR infrastructure.  

Stuart previously worked at the University of Nottingham for 12 years, during which time he worked in consumer safety, occupational ergonomics, construction, healthcare and rail domains.

James Murphy: Human Factors Function Manager, London Underground

James Murphy has over 25 years’ experience in the management and delivery of Human Factors. He considers business, commercial, operational and project needs to determine and provide the appropriate levels of human factors in a balanced way, with other engineering professions and operational and maintenance subject matter experts.

James has worked as a Human Factors Engineer in oil and gas, utilities, emergency services, national rail and urban metro domains. He is a registered member of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (C.ErgHF MIEHF) and a registered member of the Chartered Society of Designers (MCSD).

Simon Roberts: SMS Programme Lead, Safety and Aerospace Regulation Group, Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)

Simon Roberts has worked for the CAA for over 18 years and has worked as a Regional Manager and Human Factors specialist before leading the Safety Management System (SMS) Implementation Programme in the UK.  

As the SMS Programme Lead his role has been to manage and harmonise the implementation of Safety Management Systems within the UK.  He has been involved in the development of SMS guidance material, oversight methodologies, evaluation tools and training and is considered an expert in the application and regulatory oversight of SMS.

He is actively involved internationally as a member of the ICAO Safety Management Panel and the Safety Management International Collaboration Group and within Europe as the Chair of the European Human Factors Advisory Group.

Jean Page: Lead Technologist - Human Factors, BAE Systems

Jean Page is a Human Factors engineer in Military Air and Information (MA&I), BAE Systems. Since she joined the company in 1990 Jean has worked on research concepts and technologies and on a number of aircraft programmes.  

She was the Human factors lead on both the Nimrod MRA4 programme and the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) aircraft during the design stage through to qualification and certification testing.  Currently Jean is the Head of the Human Factors Discipline within MA&I, responsible for human factors capability and governance management.

She is also the lead technologist for human factors, a role which enables her to undertake research and ensure that technology solutions meet our future product needs. 

Jeremy Mawhood: HM Specialist Inspector (Human Factors), Central Specialist Inspectors Team, Office of Rail and Road

Jeremy Mawhood provides human factors advice and enforcement support nationally to help ensure that equipment, procedures and systems make the most of human abilities and take account of human limitations.  

Jeremy was a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Factory Inspector from 1987 to 2003, enforcing risk controls in manufacturing, construction, health services, airports, local government and diving.  He spent three years in national HSE policy work on workplace transport, then moved into railway safety with HM Railway Inspectorate.  In 2008 he converted to human factors role (MSc Applied Ergonomics).  

Hayder Wokil: Mobility and Automation Director, Volvo Trucks

Hayder Wokil is a civil engineer and holds a Master’s Degree of Science from Chalmers University of Technology. He has 20 years’ experience in the international Transport and Trucking industry, and is currently working as Mobility and Automation Director at Volvo Trucks - Branding and Strategy Department.

Hayder was recently heavy engaged in Volvo’s Platoon that drove from Gothenburg to Rotterdam in the Truck Platooning Challenge project. Prior to Hayder’s current position he was Quality and Uptime Director at Volvo Trucks and member of Volvo Group Quality Committee.

In Hayder’s current position he is involved in prompting new technology within automation and autonomy in trucks as well as pushing for wider usage of European Modell System (EMS) and Heavy Transport Capacity (HTC). This was in order to make the transport sector more efficient.

Michael Dales: Safety & Human Factors Engineer, Marshall ADG

Chris Avis: Senior Human Factors Design Engineer Associate Manager, Lockheed Martin UK

Chris Avis is currently the Human Factors (HF) Team Lead for the whole of the Lockheed Martin UK Ampthill (LMUKA) site. He is responsible for a team of six Human Factors Design Engineers ranging from Graduates to Senior Design Engineers, across a number of programs on the
LMUKA site.

He works with the Engineering Leadership Team to ensure Human Factors principles and processes are applied across all programs at LMUKA. This includes the development of HF requirements and providing long term HF assurance from start to finish using a range of development methodologies, guidelines and standards.

These include chairing Human Factors Working Groups and developing low and high fidelity physical Mock-Ups and System Integration Labs (SILs) which enable the HF Team to carry out detailed analysis workshops with the end users and the customer.
