Overview

The industry is two years on from the implementation of the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) and the Real Driving Emissions (RDE) test procedure and with several adaptations since, companies are still facing challenges with the new testing processes.

This one-day seminar will focus on lessons learned to equip you with the knowledge needed for cost-effective and successful testing processes. Duncan Robinson-Slater: Principal Engineer, Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) UK

Duncan Robinson-Slater specialises in light duty emissions, overseeing and advising OEMs on compliance of their vehicles to the required emissions standards for the intended market. He is responsible for a number of major OEMs globally, getting involved throughout the entire homologation process. VCA’s role is to certify vehicles, their systems and components to environmental, safety and security standards agreed at European and UNECE level. He has worked at VCA as an approval engineer since 2015. Previously he worked in the engineering project management roles within the defence industry. He worked on a number of large engineering projects across their lifecycle.

Dr David Sykes: Senior Consultant - Airborne Particle Specialist, Ricardo Energy & Environment

Dr David Sykes has a PhD in Aerosol Science and MSc in Environmental Engineering. He has worked with Ricardo for nearly 5 years and has been engaged in the Calibration of Particulate Measurement Systems for various clients in this time. He has also worked in various projects for BEIS, Defra, the Scottish Government and many other national and international clients. Such work has been diverse, and includes Particulate Modelling, AQ Roadside Monitoring & Instrument Calibration, Pollutant Source Apportionment, as well Carbon Efficiency Factors and Sulphur Content in Liquid Fuels, used to inform of Gaseous Pollutants released into the environment.

Dr Hu Li: Associate Professor, School of Chemical and Process Engineering, University of Leeds

Dr Hu Li is a chartered energy engineer and leading a research team in emissions and alternative fuels in the School of Chemical and Process Engineering. His research covers real world driving emissions, combustion and emissions of alternative fuels from engines and vehicles including road, rail and air transportation. He has more than 120 peer reviewed journal and conference publications, Dr Li is the committee member for the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International Vehicle and Engine Emissions committee, and Coal, Biomass & Alternative Fuels (CBAF) committee of ASME IGTI (American Society of Mechanical Engineers International Gas Turbine Institute).

Graziano Malivindi: Principal Emissions and Efficiency Engineer, McLaren Automotive

Graziano Malivindi has an MSc in Mechanical Engineering, specialised in Powertrains. He started his career at an Engine Control Systems supplier in France working on projects for a large volume manufacturer. During the past 5 years, Graziano has been working at McLaren Automotive in the Powertrain Controls department, focusing on Emissions and Efficiency attributes with the task to achieve the best Powertrain efficiency and certifying McLaren vehicles in all the various worldwide markets. In particular, during this period, he has overseen the introduction of the WLTP and RDE procedure on programmes such as 570S, 600LT, 720S and the McLaren Senna.

Simon Williams: Principal Calibration Engineer, MAHLE Powertrain

Simon Williams graduated from Loughborough university in 2006 where he studied Automotive engineering. He joined MAHLE Powertrain later that year and is now a key member of the Thermodynamic and Application department in the role of Principal Calibration Engineer. Simon currently leads the Real Driving Emissions team at MAHLE Powertrain and is responsible for a number of related projects.

John Comer: Head of Product Management, Volvo Trucks

Head of Product Management for Volvo Trucks, John has worked with Volvo Trucks since 1989 so is now in his thirtieth year. During this time he has seen rapid developments in diesel engines with respect to air quality emissions, from Euro I in 1993 to Euro VI Step D today. The focus is changing to CO2 but arguably due to fuel consumption and the high driven distances in this sector that always has been in focus. Prior to Volvo, he worked in the fleet dept of Bass Brewers - and does like to sample this type of product – after completing a degree in Mechanical Engineering with Vehicle Design. He has two children who are not engineers and keep him focused on the arts and English literature.

Tom Moakes: Senior Engineer - RDE & PEMS, HORIBA MIRA

Tom Moakes is a key member within HORIBA MIRA's powertrain department, with a leading role in RDE and PEMS team. He has worked in automotive testing for a number of years, including field trials for fuel economy, durability, performance testing and emissions. Tom is currently involved with all aspects of RDE and PEMS activities, including light duty, heavy duty and Non-road mobile machinery (NRMM). Working closely with the HORIBA group, he also supports research and development activities relating to emissions testing. Tom has previously presented at the IMechE Real Driving Emissions conference in 2017, as well as the Leeds University RDE course and other technical forums.

Paul Markwick: Managing Director of Operations, The Manufacturing Technology Centre

Paul Markwick is the Managing Director of Operations for the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC), part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult. The MTC helps to generate rapid and sustainable growth to the UK economy by delivering integrated manufacturing systems solutions.

Prior to joining the MTC, Paul was the Chief Executive at the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA), an Executive Agency of the UK Department for Transport (DfT). VCA is the UK Type Approval Authority for new on and off-road vehicles, responsible for certifying that these have been designed and constructed to meet internationally agreed standards.

Paul is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, a Chartered Engineer and has an extensive industry background, including roles at Jaguar, Pirelli, Land Rover and Ricardo.

Mark Peckham: Director, Cambustion

Mark Peckham attended Edinburgh and Cambridge universities for Bachelors and PhD degrees in engineering. Following a brief spell at Ricardo, he joined Cambustion where he has been a director of the Products Division since 1998. He aids technical support and develops new techniques for using their fast response emissions analyser products, which currently involves the topic of this presentation: fast RDE measurements.

Chris Riley: Business Development Manager (Europe), Convergent Science

Chris Riley studied Chemical Engineering at Loughborough University before completing his Ph.D at Cranfield University. Since then he has worked in consulting and business development for various companies in the computational fluid dynamics field. For the past five years he has worked for Convergent Science based in Oxford. Chris is responsible for engagement with engine OEMs in automotive and heavy duty sectors.
