Paul Freeland: Principal Engineer, Cosworth

Paul Freeland has over 29 years of experience in powertrain development, working with a wide variety of manufacturers and research establishments, Paul Freeland’s career has seen the transition from carburetters and contact-breaker points to full torque-structure electronic engine management systems, from a dominance of fixed camshaft two-valve engines to an almost total adoption of wide-range dual VVT four-valve engines and the widespread introduction of fully variable valvelift technologies.
As we face a future dictated by threats of human-induced climate change and the drive to decarbonise transportation, Paul’s role has expanded to leading developments in vehicle electrification and renewable energy storage systems. For the last three years Paul has led Cosworth’s development of powertrain electrification and battery systems. As part of this, he became involved in the Part APC-funded UK-ABSC project to produce the world’s first demonstrator battery pack using smart cell technology.

Nigel Taylor: Senior Manager, Advanced Battery Design, Jaguar Land Rover

Nigel Taylor has worked at Jaguar Land rover for 25 years primarily in the Vehicle Noise, Vibration and Harshness department specialising in signal processing and acoustics. During the last 10 years he has worked in research where he has won technology awards for time domain route tracking, a Range Extended Electric Vehicle and a High Power Battery Pack design. Nigel has been the technical lead for Jaguar Land Rover, WMG and TMETC on the HVM Catapult Energy Storage project, and is now leading electric propulsion system research with energy storage a key part of that team.

Parmjeet Plahe: Senior Manager, High Voltage Battery Design, Jaguar Land Rover

Parmjeet Plahe has worked internationally within the automotive industry with experience from supply base and OEM including; Pininfarina, Ford of Europe, Mitsubishi Motors & Jaguar Land Rover specialising in design and industrialisation. He has lead internationally based design teams over the past 16 years to fully industrialise mechanical, electro-mechanical, electrical, electronic systems, software and calibration. Significant industrialisation projects include Engine Management System for Jaguar Land Rover's Ingenium Engine Family, Fuel Systems, Convertible Systems, Electrical Distribution System, Instrument Cluster and Switch Gear. Parmjeet is now leading the design and industrialisation of high voltage batteries for Jaguar Land Rover within the energy storage team.

Alessandro Mariani: Technical Specialist, High Voltage Battery System, Aston Martin

Alessandro Mariani received the B.Eng. degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Glamorgan, UK. Later he received the Ph.D degree in Electrochemistry from the University of South Wales. He collaborated with Yuasa Ltd from 2011 to 2016 as researcher in optimisation and faulty analysis of latest generation energy storage. Senior Battery engineer in AVL from 2017 to 2018, lead of the design assessment and bench-marking of battery packs of development/series vehicles with a focus in the optimisation of electrical, thermal performance, safety, reliability, durability, cost and electrical components. Currently Technical specialist High Voltage Battery System, Aston martin Lagonda, able to support development of systems and components for hybrid/electric vehicle working with lithium battery in automotive applications.

Oskar Dondelewski: Lead Research Engineer, Aston Martin

Oskar Dondelewski works at Aston Martin’s Advanced Operations Department on development and implementation of new automotive technologies. He has a history of R&D work at particle laboratory CERN in Geneva, aeronautical research at Nagoya University in Japan and research on battery technologies at Imperial College London. Oskar graduated Summa Cum Laude from Warsaw University of Technology, completed postgraduate studies at Imperial College London with distinction and an exchange programme at the National University of Singapore.

Duncan Engeham: Global Engineering Director - Battery Systems, Cummins

Duncan Engeham is the Battery Engineering Director for Cummins Electrified Power. With this role he oversees all battery engineering for new product introduction for high and low voltage systems. Duncan is based in Milton Keynes in the UK, though his engineering team are located throughout the US and Europe including United Kingdom, Oregon and Indiana. Duncan began his career working in the Performance Exhausts for Road Racing Motorbikes before beginning his career with Cummins in 2006 during which he was the lead Systems Engineer for Euro 5 aftertreatment, led the Euro 6 aftertreatment development for MR Engines in Europe and then was European Engineering lead for aftertreatment. Duncan had a 2-year gap in this career working for FEV in Aachen, developing OBD calibrations for Passenger cars in 2012. Duncan started his current role with Cummins in June 2018. Duncan Holds a BEng(hons) in Mechanical Engineering from Sheffield Hallam University.

Cedric Rouaud: Global Technical Expert - Thermal Systems, Ricardo

Dr. Cedric Rouaud is Global Technical Expert and project Director for Ricardo in thermal management and waste heat recovery for conventional and electrified vehicles (passenger car and commercial vehicles including battery, electric motor, power electronics, fuel cell) since 2017. He joined Ricardo in 2008 as principal thermal engineer and since 2011 he was chief engineer for powertrain development and thermal management expert. He began his professional career in Renault as a research thermal engineer in 2000, while fulfilling his doctorate diploma in the University of Poitiers on thermal management of hybrid and electric vehicle. He was Thermal Management Chief Engineer at Renault until 2008.

Peter Miller: Chief Engineer – Battery, Millbrook

Dr Peter Miller joined Millbrook as Chief Engineer, Battery in June 2018. Previously he worked for Johnson Matthey Battery Systems for 6 years as Chief Electronics Technologist, prior to this he was Director - Electrical/Electronic Engineering at Ricardo a large automotive consultancy where he specialised in batteries. Before that he was European Director of Technology at Motorola AIEG a major automotive Tier 1. He has worked with a large number of battery chemistries including all the main lithium ion chemistries. He has extensive knowledge of testing, modelling and control of batteries, for function, life and safety.

Gael Chouchelamane: Chief Engineer – Battery Systems, Ricardo

Gael Chouchelamane is a Chief Engineer that focuses on the delivery and manufacturing of battery systems at Ricardo. Prior to joining Ricardo, Gael worked at Jaguar Land Rover where he was part of the technical team behind the I-Pace. Gael was responsible for the delivery of the cell and module components as well as the vehicle strategies that affected the battery lifetime and performance. In addition, Gael was responsible for the evaluation of the battery warranty and servicing offering. Gael has experienced in developing materials for Li-ion cells, bipolar lead acid battery and PEM fuel cell.

Dan Gribben: Engineering Manager, Envision AESC

Dan Gribben is currently Engineering Manager for Envision AESC, the UK's largest Li-Ion Battery manufacturer, supplying the battery pack for the Nissan Leaf. He has 12 years of experience working within the manufacturing industry, with the last 7 of these being spent in Battery Manufacturing covering all areas from Cell to Module and Pack manufacture. He has a broad knowledge of the battery manufacturing process having worked across various functions, including Quality Assurance, Production, Maintenance & Engineering. Dan was heavily involved in the plant upgrade from 24kWh to 40kWh batteries. His current role includes leading the manufacturing process optimisation.

Timothy Engstrom: Battery Systems Engineer, Williams Advanced Engineering

Timothy Engstrom is a Battery Systems Engineer at Williams Advanced Engineering, specialising in advanced state estimation and control strategies for the next generation of Battery Management Systems. He graduated from Imperial College London in Mechanical Engineering, with a masters from the University of Melbourne in 2017. Prior to his role at Williams Advanced Engineering, he was lead engineer for the Mild Hybrid Battery at Jaguar Land Rover where he was a finalist in the JLR Innovista Rising Star award for developing a novel battery warranty modelling methodology utilising fleet data analytics.

James Britton: Regional Manager, MSC Software

MSC Software were lucky enough to acquire James a few months ago. James has specialised in CFD throughout his 10-year career in simulation software, this is what make James such a great asset. Passionate about the tools that he sells and helping his customers not only to make the most of the software they use, but also supporting our clients to bring products to market more quickly, efficiently and cost effectively, saving time and money. James enjoys all sporting activities, especially cycling and skiing, and of course answering engineering questions!

Anwar Sattar: Lead Engineer in Battery Recycling, Warwick Manufacturing Group

Anwar Sattar is currently leading the research into the recycling of lithium ion batteries at Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), University of Warwick. He has a background in Chemical Engineering and after finishing his PhD at the University of Birmingham in hydrogen and fuel cell technology, he worked in Germany for the Fraunhofer Institute, looking at the development of a waste to energy process. He then returned to the UK and worked on the successful development of a lithium ion battery recycling process at Axion Consulting in Manchester. After this, he moved to European Metal Recycling and worked as a Process Development Engineer focusing on increasing vehicle recycling efficiency and the development of strategies and processes to deal with end of life electric vehicles and battery packs. His current work involves looking at the whole recycling chain for electric vehicles, from the vehicle itself through to the eventual recovery of metals from the batteries.

Maite Carreras Orobengoa: Electrical and Power Engineer, Airbus Defence and Space

Maite Carreras Orobengoa has an MSc in Energy and Power Electronics as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Electronics Engineering from the University of Mondragon (Spain), she started her career while she was a student as a research assistant on the Power Electronics area of an R&D company, IK4-IKERLAN. Always being passionate by the Aerospace industry she decided to pursue her studies in Toulouse, where she majored in Electrical and Automation Engineering from INP-ENSEEIHT. In order to gain management experience she completed an internship as a product manager for Emerson Network Power in Mexico City. She joined Airbus Commercial Aircraft as a trainee and then got recruited as an Electrical and Power engineer at Airbus Defence and Space. On the past 4 years, she has worked as a power system engineer and battery project manager for some of the most innovative projects in Airbus, such as: OneWeb satellites constellation, Zephyr HAPS and EfanX hybrid aircraft.

Yura Sevcenco: Senior Development Engineer, Combustion Specialist, Reaction Engines

Yura Sevcenco joined Reaction Engines in a period of massive expansion not just here but in the rest of the space sector. A graduate of Durham and Cranfield before working in the space industry, Yura took a ten year career sojourn in Cardiff to do his PhD in aerospace and combustion. An opportunity to re-join the industry to work at the forefront of propulsion technology at Reaction Engines has since expanded into working on various technological fronts with the aim of commercialising REL tech.

Stephen Borman: Principal Power Electronics Engineer, MAHLE Powertrain

Stephen Borman’s technical expertise is in low carbon vehicles and their supporting infrastructure. After completing an integrated master’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Newcastle University, Stephen worked in the power supply industry, mainly dc power supplies with battery back-up for the services industry. After returning to Newcastle to undertake an Engineering Doctorate Stephen worked in the aviation industry designing electronically driven fuel pumps for major aircraft OEMs. In 2012 Stephen then joined MAHLE Powertrain as a high voltage power electronics engineer, within the Research & Advanced Engineering department, where he has been involved in developing the electrical architecture and control systems for a number of hybrid and pure electric vehicles.

Paul McGahan: Technical Lead, Ricardo

Paul McGahan is a technical lead in Ricardo Innovations, the Research and Development group at Ricardo. His expertise is in process modelling, advanced control design and estimation particularly for xEV applications. Paul has over a decade of industrial experience. He joined Ricardo in 2018. Prior to joining Ricardo, Paul worked for Siemens as an application engineer and more recently for Honeywell as a Senior Research Engineer in the Process Control and Optimization R&D group. He holds a BE in mechanical engineering and an MSc in Instrumentation and Control Engineering from University College Dublin and Czech Technical University in Prague respectively.

Martin Brown: Improvement Consultant, HORIBA MIRA

Martin Brown is chartered engineer with over 25 years of experience. He has extensive knowledge of full scale and sub-system crash testing, including EuroNCAP and Formula 1. Martin is a former ISO/BS automotive working group technical expert and has over 10 years expertise in the design and build of early technology level prototype vehicles. He is also a technical expert to the SMMT and IMI for high voltage electric vehicle safety. Currently, he is acting as Improvement Consultant to develop safe working and test practices for new energy vector technology vehicles.

Stuart Nixon: Solution Consultant, Dassault Systèmes

Stuart Nixon is currently working as a Senior Solution Consultant. The key aspects of this role involve overseeing the project work delivered by the SIMULIA Centre of Excellence in Warrington, including preparing statements of work, managing the schedule, offering technical back up during the project and securing resource from within the technical team. As well as these day to day activities the role also involves mentoring some of the Junior members of staff and writing and delivering papers for conferences.

Fergal Harrington-Beatty: Automotive Electrification Programme Manager, HSSMI

With a background in EV powertrain engineering and manufacturing, Fergal is leading the Midlands PMO team in the deliver of multiple major APC funded automotive projects, one of which he is the overall programme lead. Focussing on automotive electrification, Fergal works onsite with these firms to analyse their current production scenarios. He then employs effective collaborative R&D solutions using his own and his colleague’s expertise to tackle the problems faced by these manufacturers looking to move to EV production or optimise their current set-ups.

John Tinson: VP Sales, Ilika

John Tinson joined ilika in 2019 as VP Sales, supporting ilika’s sales directors in the US, China , Japan and Europe. John has a degree in Physics from Birmingham University and has since focussed his career on early stage UK technology companies in sectors such as opto-electronics, cabling solutions , industrial lasers and semiconductor design.

Jacqueline Edge: Multiscale Modelling Project Manager, Imperial College London

Jacqueline grew up in South Africa and completed first a B.Sc. in Zoology and then a B.Sc. in Computer Science, both at the University of Cape Town. This led to a career as an internet developer and, after moving to London, developing banking intranet tools. Since banking is not known for its social welfare activities, she decided to go back to study clean energy at UCL, starting with an M.Sc. in Nanotechnology and finally a Ph.D. in Hydrogen Storage. She now works in the Energy Futures Lab at Imperial College London, managing the Energy Storage Research Network and facilitating research collaborations in the growing area of energy storage.

Jorn Reniers: Postdoctoral Researcher in Battery Systems, University of Oxford

Jorn is a postdoctoral researcher on the Energy Superhub Oxford project, a £41m plan to develop grid-connected batteries, EV charging and heat pumps in Oxord. He is focussing on the models and control methods of the different batteries, and how they can be improved to increase the asset lifetime without sacrificing performance. Before that, Jorn did his PhD on the effect of degradation for grid-connected lithium-ion batteries. He developed advanced control methods which could simultaneously increase the revenue and extend the lifetime of the batteries. Earlier, Jorn obtained a Msc in sustainable energy engineering from the KU Leuven and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.

Ian Whiting: Business Development Director, AGM Batteries Ltd

Ian Whiting is a power electronics engineer by background with a broad engineering pedigree. Before co-founding AMTE Power in 2013 and acquiring AGM Batteries, Ian was a manufacturing engineer within the GEC group before becoming engrossed in batteries with Li-ion at AEA Technology, advanced batteries, cell chemistries and fuel cells at QinetiQ and hybrid & electric vehicle systems at Ricardo. Ian’s goal with AMTE Power was to bridge the gap between emerging battery laboratory technologies and the real world of series manufacture. A big part of the day job is communication between OEMs, tier 1 developers and cell designers.
