Magnus Urquhart: PhD Student, Chalmers University of Technology

Magnus Urquhart is a PhD student at the research group for vehicle aerodynamics at Chalmers University of Technology. His PhD project is on increasing the understanding of aerodynamic loss due to vortex structures in and around the wheels, underbody and wake.

Max Resnick: Industrial Designer, Coventry University

Max is an industrial designer within the watch industry, also responsible for all in-house, design projects at ‘A Collected Man’. He has a first-class Masters of Design degree in Automotive Design from Coventry University, with his final-year MDes project investigating the aerodynamics and design of multiple vehicles in platoons.

Jeff Howell: _, Loughborough University

Jeff is retired, but continues as a Visiting Research Fellow in the Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering at Loughborough University. He started his career in the aircraft industry, but has mainly worked in the field of vehicle aerodynamics. Jeff was head of Aerodynamics at Rover, then Land Rover and Jaguar Land Rover, before a similar role at the Tata Motors European Technical Centre.

Peter Boardman: Designer, Princess Yachts

Peter is an automotive designer with a passion for motorsport and aerodynamic performance. His Master of Design project investigated at how endurance racing may look with the developing road car technologies like electric and autonomous vehicles. This project earned Peter a first-class degree with honours in Automotive design.

Willem Toet: Visiting Professor , University of Bolton

Professor Willem Toet from Sauber Aerodynamics Ltd is a visiting Professor at the University of Bolton and lecturer at prestigious universities around the world. He left home at the age of 16 and worked his way through school, university and then varied roles in Australian motorsport before taking the plunge and moving to the UK. There he eventually landed a role in Formula 1. Now with over 30 years of experience in F1, mainly as Head of Aerodynamics at companies such as Benetton, Ferrari, BMW and Sauber Motorsport, Willem has come to love passing on a lifetime of motorsport lessons.

Giancarlo Pavia: PhD candidate, Loughborough University

Mr. Giancarlo Pavia is a PhD candidate in Applied Aerodynamics from Loughborough University (UK). His research work focuses on the experimental characterisation of the unsteady aerodynamic behaviour of simplified automotive shapes, with a particular emphasis on wake topology and base drag. He is a graduate from ‘La Sapienza’ University of Rome (Italy), with a BSc in Aerospace Engineering and an MSc in Aeronautical Engineering. He also earned a master in Automotive Engineering from the University of Naples Federico II (Italy), before joining the Applied Aerodynamics Group, initially as a research student and then, since 2015, as a PhD student. He is currently writing up his thesis.

Graham Hodgson: PhD Candidate, Loughborough University

Graham is currently studying for a PhD at Loughborough University, focusing on experimental surface contamination. He obtained his Masters degree in Automotive Engineering from the same institute.

Henrik Alfredsson: Professor of Fluid Physics, Linné FLOW Centre, KTH Mechanics

P. Henrik Alfredsson obtained his doctoral degree in fluid mechanics from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in 1983 and is since 1989 professor of fluid physics at KTH. He does experimental research on stability, turbulence and flow control both from a fundamental point of view and also in collaboration with vehicle industry in Sweden. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences.

Max Varney: PhD Student, Loughborough University

Max is currently researching experimental novel methods of drag reduction at Loughborough University. He obtained a Masters in Automotive Engineering from the same institute.

Michael Bolzon: PhD Student, Chalmers University of Technology

Michael Bolzon has a Ph.D in fluid mechanics and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering. He conducts research on wheel aerodynamics, both experimentally and numerically. The goal of his current research is to further develop a numerical methodology for wheel rotation.

Ron Ayers: Chief of Aerodynamics, Bloodhound SSC

Ron Ayers had an engineering apprenticeship at Handley Page Ltd, working on the Hastings freighter and the first prototype Victor bomber from 1950 to 1954. During this time he was also studying for BSc(Eng).From 1954 to July 1956. He carried out his post graduate study at the College of Aeronautics, Cranfield (now Cranfield University) acquiring an MSc, specialising in aerodynamics. He was an aerodynamicist at Bristol Aeroplane Company and British Aircraft Corporation Guided Weapons Division from 1956 to 1967 and then a Chief Aerodynamicist for 5 years, mostly on the Bloodhound SAGW. Since 1992 he has been involved in the design and build of very high-speed cars (or very low flying aircraft?) such as Thrust SSC, the JCB Dieselmax and (currently) Bloodhound SSC.

Adrian Gaylard: Technical Specialist, Computational Aerodynamics & WDM, Thermal Aerodynamic Systems Engineering, Jaguar Land Rover

Adrian Gaylard joined British Rail’s Research Division in 1987 with a degree in Physics and Maths from Leicester Polytechnic, moving into aerodynamics in 1989 to apply CFD to rail vehicles and infrastructure. In 1996 he joined MIRA and worked on automotive, wind engineering and sports science aerodynamics projects. Adrian moved to Jaguar Land Rover in 2001 where he is the Technical Specialist for Computational Aerodynamics. Adrian has interests in drag reduction, unsteady aerodynamics, surface contamination and computational aeroacoustics. Adrian is a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Physicist, Chair of Vehicle Aerodynamics at the SAE, Chair of the EPSRC National Wind Tunnel Facility Advisory Board and a Board Member of the European Car Aerodynamics Research Association.

Sébastien Chaligné: Aerodynamics Attribute Team Leader , Jaguar Land Rover

Sébastien Chaligné is currently working as aerodynamics attribute team leader at Jaguar Land Rover, leading the development of large SUVs for aerodynamics, water and dirt management and aero-acoustics attributes. He obtained his doctoral degree in Fluid Mechanics with Volvo Trucks from “Ecole Centrale de Lyon” in France in 2013 as well as two master degrees in Automotive Engineering and Aerodynamics from Chalmers University in Göteborg and ESTACA in Paris. His main interests are the use of CFD within the aerodynamics process development, as well as drag reduction and unsteady flows.

David Soper: Lecturer in Vehicle Aerodynamics, University of Birmingham

David is a lecturer in vehicle aerodynamics at the University of Birmingham. His research interests lie in the field of applied fluid dynamics, notably in the area of wind engineering and vehicle aerodynamics. His work focuses on understanding the unsteady nature of road and rail vehicle aerodynamics through novel experimental investigations. He is the manager and coordinator for the University of Birmingham Transient Aerodynamic Investigation (TRAIN) rig facility and in charge of the £1.5 m UKCRIC upgrades. David graduated from the University of Manchester with a BSc in Mathematics and an MSc in Theoretical and Applied Fluid Dynamics, before undertaking a PhD in the aerodynamics of freight trains at the University of Birmingham. He is a member on the board of the Young Members Group for the UK Wind Engineering Society and of the GB aerodynamics working group and BSI Mirror Group for railway aerodynamics.

Hesham Ebrahim: PhD Candidate, Northumbria University

Hesham is a PhD candidate specialising in the aerodynamic characteristics of passenger vehicles operating in a platoon with a MEng degree in Aerospace engineering from Queen Mary University of London (2014). His research began in the end of 2015 and he is currently in the final stage of acquiring experimental measurements and writing up.

Chris Hebert: Engineering Director, D2H Aero

An aerodynamicist by trade, Chris’ career started with developing Indycars for Reynard Motorsport followed by F1 cars for the Jaguar, Red Bull and Toyota teams. After Toyota’s withdrawal from F1 at the end of 2009 he led their aerodynamics department as it transitioned into becoming an engineering service provider, whilst it also embarked on its World Endurance Championship winning LMP1 programme. More recently, since forming D2H, Chris’ projects have diversified across aero and thermal work for numerous motorsport series, hypercars, EVs and leading the aero development for the British Cycling Team for the Rio and Tokyo Olympics.

Jenny Holt: Lecturer, Cranfield University

Ms Jennifer Holt joined the College of Aeronautics at Cranfield University as a wind tunnel technician in 2000. She has a BEng in Aeronautical Engineering from Salford University and an MSc in Aerospace Vehicle Design from Cranfield. In 2001 Jenny left to spend 2 years at wind engineering consultants Anemos Associates returning to Cranfield as a Research Officer in 2003. Jenny then became a Research Fellow in 2007 and a lecturer in 2015

Josep MK Carbonell Oyonarte: Motorsport and Aeronautical Engineer, Cranfield University

Motorsport and aeronautical engineer, with an MSc in Advanced Motorsport Engineering by Cranfield University. Specialised in aerodynamics and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), applying aeronautical knowledge onto motorsport engineering. Capable of taking into account the interrelations between the different areas of vehicle engineering. Currently working as a simulation engineer in Ricardo.

Fortunato Nucera: Aerodynamics Engineer, Honda R&D Co. Ltd

Fortunato Nucera obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering from The Polytechnic University of Milan and his Master’s Degree from The University of Tokyo in Japan with a research, carried out at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) , about the Design Exploration of Reusable Launch Vehicles making use of Computational Fluid Dynamics. He is now employed as a CFD Engineer at Honda Automobiles R&D Center in Japan where he researches in the field of multi-phase fluid dynamics.
