Overview
Along with the digital manufacturing and climate change energy challenges (i.e. electrification), surface engineering and tribology will phase in a new era of research and innovation. It is desired that the new technologies such as physical vapour deposited (PVD) of nanoparticles, surface texturing and surface engineering of additive manufacturing can be addressed and introduced to a broader industry perspective. This event will be a great opportunity for academic pioneers in these fields to meet the industry and initiate new collaboration and knowledge transfers.
Tribology and Surface Engineering, as enabling technologies, have been continuously advancing UK manufacturing sectors in terms of fuel economy (reduced friction and wear), improved productivities and product reliability, functionalisation of machine components, providing alternative manufacturing processes due to environment legislations, and electrification of vehicles, etc. Surface Engineering and Advanced Coatings contributed £11bn in 2011 and associated with £140bn UK manufacturing products. It is expected the figure will grow strongly with the drive of digitalisation, REACH legislation and the recent government initiative of electrification of vehicles.
Advanced manufacturing processes such as additive manufacturing and surface texturing will challenge the current research in tribology and surface engineering by bringing new and exciting questions to be addressed by this community.
Key topics this seminar will address:
- Multifunctional Surfaces (sensing for low wear and friction, texturing, interactions with lubricants, etc.)
- Surface Engineering for additive manufacturing and conventional manufacturing systems
- Surface coatings for product reliability and durability
- The role of Tribology and Surface Engineering across multiple sectors that contributes towards Net-Zero
- Digital manufacturing in Surface Engineering
Attend this seminar to:
- Review of current developments of surface engineering (in particular physical vapour deposited coatings) in a variety of sectors; focusing on nanoparticle doped coatings and surface texturing
- Address the key UK sectors for alternative manufacturing process aligned with the EU REACH legislation
- Address the physical vapour deposited in the energy sector (e.g. battery materials)
