Jennifer Gilmour: Senior Mechanical Engineer, Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd.

Jennifer Gilmour is a Senior Mechanical Engineer at Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd, responsible for mechanical processes and procedures across the site. In tandem with this she is the site Senior Advisor for Lifting and Pressure Systems. A Chartered Engineer she graduated from the University of Glasgow with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering before transitioning into Nuclear via Marine Renewables and Oil and Gas. Jennifer has extensive knowledge of mechanical design and a keen interest in forensic engineering, which has allowed her to be an integral part of site investigations and the Technical & Governance team.

Robert Cook: Mechanical Engineer, Nuclear and Power, Atkins Global

Robert Cook is a Mechanical Engineer at Atkins in the Nuclear and Power business unit. Over 5 years at Atkins, Robert has completed multiple gear assessments on crane hoists to BS ISO 6336. These have assessed the fatigue performance of gears on cranes performing nuclear lifts and have been used to inform gear replacements and safety case updates. In addition to his work on gears, Robert has also worked on other assessments of nuclear lifting equipment, mainly looking at the fatigue performance of shafts and crane structures.

Stephen Prescott: Project Manager - Windscale Pile 1 Chimney Demolition, Sellafield Sites Ltd.

Stephen joined Sellafield Ltd in 2008, originally as a Safety Case Advisor for decommissioning projects. Following graduation at Lancaster University with a Masters in Nuclear Decommissioning, Stephen moved into Project Management in 2013. Stephen has worked on various phases of the Pile 1 Chimney Demolition Project, including Filter Gallery Demolition, Diffuser Demolition and more recently the detailed design stage of Barrel Demolition. Stephen led the assurance process which ultimately led to the regulator (ONR) to issue permission to build and operate the tower crane in support of chimney demolition.

James Temple: Sub-Project Manager - Windscale Pile 1 Chimney Demolition, Sellafield Sites Ltd.

Graduated at Coventry University with a degree in Construction Management in summer 2014, and then subsequently Joined Sellafield in September 2014 as a Project Management Graduate. After 2 years on the scheme, James moved into a project support role on the Windscale Pile 1 Chimney Demolition Project and has recently taken up the role of Sub-Project Manager delivering key enabling packages for the next phase of the project. During his time on the project, James has been heavily involved in the construction of the tower crane, and the removal of 226 concrete blocks during the Diffuser Demolition Phase.

Jim Spencer: Principal Consulting Engineer, AFRY Solutions UK Limited

James Spencer has some 36 years’ experience in nuclear licensing, safety assessment and engineering covering the UK civil nuclear industry and UK defence sector, plus overseas nuclear experience (including Switzerland, Finland, Saudi Arabia and Turkey). He is experienced in many aspects of licensing, safety assessment and design, including engineering analysis of mechanical and structural elements, hazard identification, safety case production, assessment of modifications and probabilistic safety assessment including human factor assessments. He has specialised in the safety justification of cranes, mechanical handling and fuel handling operations.

Barry Lyon: Nuclear Safety Inspector, Mechanical Engineering Specialist, Office for Nuclear Regulation

Barry is a chartered mechanical engineer and Fellow of the IMechE and has been working in the mechanical engineering discipline for 37 years.

Following a mechanical technician apprenticeship in the power distribution industry, he worked on the design and manufacture of systems for – low/medium voltage electrical switchgear, military aircraft (Eurofighter), marine propulsion / rail traction engines, pharmaceutical tableting machinery (where he attained a worldwide patent for spray gun nozzles and developed modelling techniques), oil and gas industry in F1 composite manufacture.

His nuclear industry experience included the design and build of uranium enrichment plants in Germany, UK and Holland. His current position is a nuclear safety inspector for the Office for Nuclear Regulation, where he has focussed on the regulation of naval submarine facilities, decommissioning and storage facilities of the UK’s legacy waste.

Wayne Dunn: Mechanical Handling Manager, Engineering Services, Marine & Technology, Babcock International Group

Pete Best: 10 Dock Mechanical Handling Lead, Marine Submarines, Marine & Technology, Babcock International Grou

Pete is a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer with WS Atkins and their Discipline Lead for “high integrity” engineering provided into the defence nuclear industry. Over the last 10 years his technical focus has centred around the submarine enterprise with a particular focus on submarine maintenance and mechanical handling equipment. Pete heas spent the last 7 years leading a range of Devonport based projects focused on the design development of future mechanical handling capabilities within their new facilities to support the next generation of nuclear powered submarines. He is currently seconded into Babcock International in Devonport acting as their mechanical handling design lead on their 10 Dock project.

Imran Moola: Fuel Route Systems Engineer, Design Authority, EDF Energy

Imran Moolla graduated with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Birmingham. He joined EDF Energy in 2009 and began his career working on New Nuclear Build projects in France, developing the detailed design of EDF’s European Pressurised Reactors. Since 2017, Imran has been supporting EDF Energy’s existing fleet of operating reactors as a Fuel Route Systems Engineer. His role involves a mix of Safety Case and Plant Engineering work for spent fuel handling equipment and the irradiated fuel storage ponds. He currently plays a lead role in the delivery of Safety Cases for the flask route modification projects being delivered in preparation for end of life Defueling.

Stu Robson: Technical Sales Engineer, SCX Special Projects

Stu Robson graduated from the University of Birmingham with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and has worked in the mechanical handling/lifting industry ever since. Following a period of around 6 years in mechanical engineering with a focus on specialist handling systems for the nuclear industry, Stu has spent the last 4.5 years as Technical Sales Engineer at SCX Special Projects, developing detailed technical and commercial proposals for specialist lifting applications in the nuclear industry among many others.

Callum Medlock: Mechanical Engineering Manager, Jacobs

Callum is a Mechanical Engineering Manager for Jacobs and works within the Decommissioning Projects Group. A Chartered Engineer, he graduated from the University of Hull in 2011 with a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and has since worked within the nuclear industry. Callum has conducted projects for a variety of nuclear industry site licence holders. Callum’s most recent project experiences include the DSRL Shaft and Silo Integrated Design Team and the Magnox Concrete Box Loading Facility, both of which required design and implementation of significant lifting equipment for the repackaging of nuclear materials for long term storage.

Thierry Grandgeorge: CTO, REEL Group

I&C engineer expert in I&C lifting solutions for highly technical installations nuclear Aluminum industry and aeronautic. 28 years of experience in lifting machine in REEL GROUP with some 20 year in nuclear industry : upgrading Fuel handling system in France to improve performance, safety and reliability , deigning new fuel Handling system for EPR project in Finland, China France and UK.

Olivier Ganier: Director of the Business Line Project Infrastructure & Export in Defence and Cycle division, REEL S.A.S

Mechanical Engineer with strong technical background with 21 years of experience in Defense and Nuclear Waste Retreatment projets. Delivered multiple In Cell and High Integrity Cranes for SELLAFIELD during the last 10 years (acting as Project Manager).

Paul Taylor: Technical Director, Design & Safety Limited

the naval and civil nuclear fields working on facilities design involving cranes, lifting equipment and process systems across several licensed sites. Experience includes design of a nuclear submarine Defueling facility and currently, the design of a new ‘Materials Highway’ for submarine maintenance activities.

Andy Pearson: Senior Technical Advisor, EDF Energy

Andy Pearson join the Central Electricity Generating Board in 1988 and has since worked for a number of its successors companies, such as Magnox, BNFL and now EDF.

His specialism is reviewing operations, potential faults and the protection provided against any consequences that could result (hazards). Although his Batchelor’s Degree was in Mechanical Engineering, his role include insuring electrical protection, administrative protection (human factors) as well as mechanical protection is adequate and commensurate with modern standards.

Andy’s current role is to ensure adequate protection can be demonstrated for the handling of irradiated fuel for end of life Defuelling.
