Overview

There is an expectation that that both existing and new infrastructure and equipment will likely be utilised well beyond its design-life. As a result, engineers are increasingly required to extend the operational lives of their assets, and designers must consider the possibility of future life extension.

This seminar will focus on assets old and new, bringing together perspectives from the entire asset lifecycle. It will feature engineers and experts from a range of sectors to address the challenges posed by, and lessons learned from life-extension projects. It is an opportunity for delegates to learn from practices employed in other industries and explore how they can optimise their own strategy for life extension.

Presentations will focus on issues including designing for life extension, the importance of modularity, monitoring of assets and best practice across the whole lifecycle, empowering attendees to rethink how they can get the most value from their assets. There will also be ample opportunities to network with peers across a diverse range of industries, exposing delegates to new ideas and engagement with the wider engineering community.

With a vast array of assets reaching the end of their life, asset management and in particular life extension, are now pertinent. The drive to net-zero along with managing the competing priorities of safety, performance, affordability and sustainability are critical challenges for engineers and particularly relevant for older assets. This event will allow engineers to consider if and how life extension can fit into the current assets that they are working on that are at the end of their life.

John Woodhouse: Managing Director, The Woodhouse Partnership Ltd

With 30 years’ experience in utilities, energy, transport and other sectors, John is one of the most widely known experts in integrated asset management projects, advising for some of the largest companies in the world. John is a Founder and Life Fellow of the Institute of Asset Management; he has authored a number of books, chaired the development of BSI PAS55 and represents the UK on the ISO55000 committee. He also led the international MACRO and SALVO collaboration projects in optimised asset management decision-making.

Paul Grady: HM Principal Specialist Inspector (Mechanical Engineering), Health and Safety Executive

Paul holds the HSE Portfolio for Machinery Safety and Pressure Systems. This involves technical input to HSE policy on British, European and International Standards on these subjects, together with liaison with industry user-groups and trade associations. Paul is the main author of HSE guidance INDG 392 (recover paper safely), GS4 (Safety in Pressure Testing) and PM73 (Safety requirements for Autoclaves).

Paul is also the chairman of the BSi Machinery Safety national standards group MCE3 and was actively involved in representing HSE in the development of BS14100, revision of PD5304 and current development of BS14200 for the maintenance of machinery.

Previously Paul managed a team of mechanical engineers, providing technical direction and advice to incident investigations to a diverse range of general manufacturing, construction and fairground applications.

Panos Frangos: Operational Research Project Leader, Sellafield Ltd

Panos is a Chartered Scientist and holds a master’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research. He has more than 20 years of practical experience in OR in the nuclear industry. Panos is an Operational Research Model development Project Leader at the Sellafield Ltd.’s Advance Business Analytics group providing internal support to the enterprise Value Streams and Functions. Panos is leading the development of analytical methods, tools, and visualisations to provide insight and inform business decisions. His recent interests include how emerging techniques such as Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning could be utilised in support of Sellafield’s mission to create a clean and safe environment for future generations.

Mike McCarthy: T-RAM Consultant, Sellafield Ltd

Mike is a reliability consultant and director of Risk Based Decisions Ltd. He has worked in many high risk, high consequence industries over his 30-year career. He is currently supporting Sellafield Ltd in the development and assurance of its T-RAM processes on several major projects. He is particularly interested in using simulation, sparse data, and expert elicitation methods as early as possible in the design phase to enable insight, performance prediction and assurance throughout the asset lifecycle.

Janet Chang: PhD Candidate, University of Cambridge

Janet Chang is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie fellow in Innovative Training Networks. Her research focuses on evaluating the possible effects of handover information quality on compliance-related asset management processes for commercial buildings.

Ms Chang’s background offers a diverse portfolio of work for Fortune 500 companies. Before commencing the PhD program, Ms Chang worked as the Integrated Facility Program Planning Manager for the Walt Disney Company. Her responsibilities include developing, maintaining, and refining an integrated recurring capital investment plan for Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California.

Ms Chang is a member of Queens’ College at the University of Cambridge and was named one of the Stamp Scholars in 2021.

Cameron Sloman: Senior Consultant, AMCL

Cameron is a Senior Consultant at AMCL with 3 years of experience in the Aviation sector. Graduating from the University of Leeds with a MEng in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering, Cameron has a track record of successful strategic and transformation projects across the Aviation, Rail and Water sectors. Most recently Cameron has been specialising in the implementation and delivery of Asset Management Planning capability, specifically focussing on investment planning, whole life cost modelling and whole system decision making.

Shyam Ramaiya: Senior Consultant, AMCL

Shyam is a Senior Consultant at AMCL having graduated with a MEng in Mechanical Engineering from Loughborough University. Shyam has been responsible for leading the development and delivery of a number of Asset Management projects across the Rail, Water, Power and Aviation sectors. Shyam has particular expertise in Investment Planning and Value Framework development and is passionate about helping organisations make sustainable investment decisions. He has also supported a number of technology implementations in asset-intensive organisations, including Enterprise Asset Management and Asset Investment Planning systems.

Chris Bates: Principal Operations and Maintenance Consultant, Asset Management, Binnies

After graduating from the University of Manchester in 2014 Chris Bates joined United Utilities as a graduate mechanical engineer. Whilst working towards Chartership with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Chris spent time assisting operational colleagues with a whole host of engineering issues, whether it was trouble shooting on a weekend when it had all gone wrong or looking to reduce the risk to people’s health and wellbeing that comes with working reactively. He found a passion for maintenance, in particular condition based maintenance and went on to spend four years in the role of Reliability Maintenance Manager, during which he implemented significant improvements to the lubrication regime as well as transforming the CBM program and strategy. Chris joined Binnies mid-way through 2022 to help organisations implement similar improvements and realise the myriad of benefits, financial and otherwise, that are there to be had.

Stephen Moore: T-RAM Process Lead, Sellafield Ltd

Stephen has 38 years’ experience working in the nuclear industry working in various positions, from operations, manufacturing, and engineering over last 10 years he has been working in reliability engineering. Stephen is the T- RAM process lead for SL providing internal support to the enterprise value streams and the functions. Stephen is leading the development of TRAM principles and training throughout the company. He is particularly interested in how things fail and how we can use sparse data AI to better understand failure and prevent it, enabling better insight into ageing management and system health through the asset lifecycle.
