Overview

There are many industries which require the practice of bulk handling (food, pharmaceuticals, chemical, petrochemical, power, mining etc.). A number of regulatory frameworks govern the handling of bulk solids, but there is a lack of formal training in this area and the amount of available information is quite limited.

This event aims to provide an overview of these issues to engineers from both end-users and equipment manufacturers. The seminar will provide a broad overview of the practical examples of common pitfalls. The event will cover procurement, design, operation, and maintenance stages in order to comply with regulation and foster best practice.

The seminar’s agenda will focalise the complexities associated with materials selection in the design and manufacturing process of equipment as well as the difficulties associated with EU minimum safety requirements such as the ATEX directive or wider DSEAR user directive.

Carl Priestley: QSHE Manager, Schenck Process UK Ltd

Carl Priestley came into HSE back in 2000 due to undertaking Mechanical Handling Equipment Training for a logistics company. With a supportive Line Manager and numerous courses, Carl has since worked in various industries from Logistics, FMCG, Oil and Gas and Manufacturing. Carl likes implementing management systems and processes whereby they can have an impact on an organisation to improving their standards. Every day is completely different with new challenges that lie ahead. With the various industries that he works in, Carl's focus is to ensure that everyone goes home at the end of a shift healthy and safe.

Mike Bradley: Director, The Wolfson Centre for Bulk Solids Handling Technology

Mike is Professor in Particle and Bulk Technology, Director of the Wolfson Centre for Bulk Solids Handling Technology and Head of the Greenwich Manufacturing Group at the University of Greenwich. He was awarded both his honours degree and PHD from Thames Polytechnic (now the University of Greenwich) and, as manager/director, provides technical leadership in all aspects of bulk solids handling. His particular areas of interest lie in pneumatic conveying, design of hoppers and silos, dust control, plant integration and maintenance of product quality. He is Chair of Solids Handling and Processing Association (SHAPA), and a member of Materials Handling Engineers Association (MHEA) and of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Bulk Materials Handling Committee (IMechE). He was awarded a professorship in 2006 and the directorship in 2008.

Roger Watson: Technical Specialist, R&D Industrial Ltd

Roger Watson has worked as a Technical Specialist at R&B Industrial since 2015, providing consultancy services in DSEAR and COSHH, and supporting design of LEV (Local Exhaust Ventilation) systems. He has a PhD in Dense-Phase Pneumatic Conveying, and has previously worked as a postdoctoral researcher in carbon capture and combustion science. Roger is a member of the Institute of Chemical Engineers and an associate member of the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene.
