Join us at the IMechE's London HQ as writer, researcher, and engineer Calum Douglas delivers this year’s Annual Lecture on behalf of the Institution’s Powertrain Systems and Fuels Group.
Calum has dedicated over 5 years to researching and writing a technical and intelligence history of fighter aircraft piston engine development during the Second World War. This era saw history’s greatest advances in aircraft piston technology: Calum joins us to tell the story of a desperate contest between the world's best engineers - the Secret Horsepower Race.
The lecture will cover the development of both allied and German piston aero engines during WWII including fuels and the people behind them. Amongst other things, advances in materias, superchargers, and fuel injection will be discussed.
LECTURE SPEAKER:
Calum Douglas is a mechanical engineer specialising in piston engine design and development. In his spare time, Calum researches and writes about Second World War era engine technology and assists organisations restoring warbird engines.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?:
This event is free for all to attend and is recommended to all those involved with or have an interest in historical engineering and engine or propulsion systems development.
SUPPORT YOUR CAREER DEVELOPMENT:
Attending this event supports your Professional Development; if you're an IMechE Member, this can be tracked in the Career Developer section of your online account.

After qualifying as an aircraft welder, Calum spent 5 years working as a welder and fabricator making racing car parts near Cambridge in the UK, before leaving to become a qualified mechanical engineer at university.
This quickly became participating in Formula Student with added extras of exams to do. Calum graduated twice from Oxford Brookes University first with a BEng and then an MSc by research degree in 2011.
He spent the next three years working as an engine designer for Toyota Motorsport in Germany before returning to the UK and working under his own company name providing services for manufacturers such as Jaguar-Land Rover and Mercedes-AMG.
He accidentally became a writer after discovering that many of the technologies of the Formula-One motor racing engines he was involved with had in fact been conceived in the Second World War.
He has written two books on Second World War technology and is regularly invited all over the world to lecture about the history of high-performance piston engines. From Rolls-Royce to the Royal Aeronautical Society and many Formula One teams including Scuderia-Ferrari.
He continues to research and write whilst working as a freelance engineer from his home in Scotland.
