A combination of high strength, low density (~4.43 g/cm3), high creep resistance up to about 550°C, low modulus (high flexibility) and excellent corrosion resistance makes Titanium alloys an excellent choice for structural parts in the aircraft industry for air frames and aero-engines applications.
As a company, GKN have been developing expertise in Metallic Additive Manufacturing (AM) for a number of years within its powder metals and aerospace divisions in particular. Much of the hype surrounding additive manufacturing technologies has been made around higher productivity, less materials waste, and advanced designs. However, to realise the potential of AM the major hurdle for industry is the Certification and Qualification towards aerospace applications. Due to the immaturity of the technique widely, there is lack of available international standards and Qualification and Certification procedures for AM structures.
In this presentation, GKN will elaborate on their journey and the lessons learned during their industrialisation of AM products through appropriate qualification and certification methodologies for aerospace applications. GKN’s certification approaches for both part-specific and broader process-based qualification approaches along with example case studies demonstrating AM components certification and topologically optimised structures. The presentation will also cover how GKN is currently working with internationally recognised certification authorities such as Federal Aviation Authority and OEM in close collaboration towards certification of higher class safety critical AM components.
