Overview
The design of advanced nuclear reactors is continually developing to meet the demands of a world requiring an increasing number of sustainable options for power generation. The World Nuclear Association highlights SDG7: the goal of affordable and clean energy for which nuclear power plants provide a substantial global backing.
Building on last year's sold-out event in Manchester, the IMechE is delighted to announce the return of the Advanced Nuclear Reactor Design seminar, which will provide a key forum for all technical innovators, manufacturers, designers, and government regulators involved to meet, discuss technical challenges and share updates on the latest AMR and SMR projects in the UK and abroad.
Following the recent guidance on GDA for advanced nuclear reactors in association with the Future Nuclear Enabling Fund (FNEF), the seminar will tackle the multiple design constraints facing the nuclear industry at present. This will cover the changing landscape of safety and regulation, construction risk, manufacturing and operations and current and future technical innovation.
PRESENTING SPEAKERS INCLUDE:
- KEYNOTE: Simon Bowen, Director, Great British Nuclear, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero
- Philip Rogers, Director, Equilibrion
- Omar Afify, Senior Safety Case Engineer, UK Atomic Energy Authority
- Sean Perry, Lead Design Engineer, Nuclear Transport Solutions
- Mike Waite, Director, Mike Waite Nuclear Consulting Ltd.
- John Bowmer, Test Rig Design Engineer, Rolls-Royce SMR
- Jeremy Owston, Mechanical Engineer, BAE Systems
- Stephen Coates, Operational Support Lead, X- energy
- David Landon, Chief Executive Officer, MoltexFlex
WHY OUR SPEAKERS ARE EXCITED TO ATTEND:
"Nuclear is back on the map as a low carbon source of sustainable baseload power...we have much to learn from each other and need to share to avoid our well-established habits of wheel re-invention! Engineering as a discipline will be at the heart of the rejuvenation of the nuclear industry and without sharing and collaborating, we will simply not succeed."
Simon Bowen, Director, Great British Nuclear; Department for Energy Security and Net Zero

"The breadth and variety of different topics which will be presented is great...There is always value in meeting people face to face. I always come away from engagements like this having learned or discussed something that I was not expecting. Considering all the current opportunities and intent for the UK nuclear industry, this is a great opportunity to gain some visibility and oversight of ongoing workstreams being progressed and developed to realise the UK’s energy security and net zero ambitions."
Ross Haddow, Frazer-Nash Consultancy
|
"With the recent relaunch of GB Nuclear and the SMR selection process, I am sure all eyes will be on Simon Bowen’s presentation. GB Nuclear has the capability to accelerate the UK’s nuclear programme and provide a pathway to a safe, reliable, carbon-neutral energy sector by 2050...Benchmarking is a key tool in the nuclear safety handbook, balancing design innovation and efficiency with increasing safety. Increasing market knowledge will also help focus innovation in a deployable, market-led direction."
Mike Waite, Mike Waite Nuclear Consulting

" I will be providing an overview of the UKAEA’s ambitious STEP programme, our journey to date and future milestones....In the hybrid world that we now live in, we spend so much of our time in online meetings, but I still very much believe there is space for the human element! Meeting people in person and having the opportunity to build relationships, as well as sharing best practice, is invaluable."
Debbie Kempton: Engineering Director, UK Atomic Energy Authority
|
" I'm interested in hearing from Omar Afify on UKAEA’s thoughts on hazards and the advanced nuclear reactor landscape and Ross Haddow’s presentation on product regulatory compliance for UK Nuclear Power Plants. Sharing best practices and building cross collaborations, are vital for ensuring the safe and sustainable development of nuclear energy while mitigating environmental risks."
Dafni Sifnioti, Senior Manager of Natural Hazards and Environment, EDF

|
"I am interested in hearing from the Great British nuclear team on the progress and direction of GBN vehicle and how it is envisaged to enable new nuclear to be built in the UK. We can get very silod in our work and can miss the bigger picture or how what we are doing could fit into the future world landscape. These events allow sharing of ideas and concepts to a wide and varied audience who can ask though provoking questions and challenge many of our assumptions going forward."
Jeremy Owston, Principle Mechanical Engineer, BAE Systems Maritime
TOPICS TO BE EXPLORED INCLUDE:
- Nuclear criticality safety
- The use of data analysis and fault/design simulation
- The transportation and location of facilities/building location for plants/Site interface concerns
- Generation 3 and 4 technologies and their grid impact/interaction
- Material challenges
- Fuels: Development and production routes
- High temperature gas reactors
